Reflections from Fr. Rick

Psychologist Erich Fromm wrote: "Giving is more joyous than receiving, not because it is a deprivation, but because in the act of giving lies the expression of my aliveness."
(The Art of Loving)

The more we give, the more we experience the world as the creation of our efforts and as a reflection of our aliveness. In the well-being of individuals that we support, we experience our aliveness. In the growth of communities to which we are genuinely dedicated, we experience our aliveness. The thing that we care for, whether it is a community, a fellow human being, or any living thing, is the source of our empowerment. In it we see our power; through it we feel alive.

If giving is a true expression of our aliveness, then collectively St. Michael's is FULL OF LIFE! Perhaps this is what Jesus intended when he said, "I came you may have life, and life abundantly." St. Michael's has touched numerous lives this year through our compassionate generosity, and as a result we are experiencing abundant life.

Your faithfully giving to our mission and ministry has allowed us to reach out to numerous new families who now call St. Michael's home, along with feeding, clothing and giving school supplies to hundreds of children in need at our local College Park schools. ONCE AGAIN, you came through in a tremendous way these past two weekends raising over $3,500 to purchase a new washer and dryer and supplies for Lake Silver Elementary so that no child will feel ashamed or inadequate due to their clothes. Thank you! St. Michael's Day was a fantastic celebration and I'm grateful to all who made it possible.

The Spirit of God is on the move at St. Michael's and God has much in store for us in 2019 and beyond. As we open our hearts to giving we'll indeed experience abundant life and the joy of the Lord.

Thanks again for expressing your aliveness through your joyous giving.

In Christ's love,

"Shoebox" Ministry Starts on Sunday

It's time for Operation Christmas Child!
This is an opportunity for you to participate in Global Outreach to children around the world. Since 1993 over 157 million shoeboxes filled with gifts, and covered in prayer, have been delivered to children in 160 countries.

OCC shoeboxes will be available in the Narthex and Chapel beginning this Sunday, Oct. 7.  Please take one home, pray for the child who will receive your shoebox, fill it full of gifts following the guidelines, enclose $9 (helps defray costs of collection, shipping, distribution and training) in the envelope inside the box (or you may do it online to Follow Your Box), and tape the label on the top where indicated.

Please do not tape your box closed; use rubber bands if needed. Return your box to the church office or altar  on or before Nov. 4 when the shoeboxes will be blessed and then taken to the collection location.

Thank you in advance for your participation - a child, a family, and a community will be affected by this gift and your prayers. These children will then have the opportunity to learn about the Good News of God in Christ through the follow-up program, The Greatest Journey.  The shoebox is just the beginning!

Collecting Donations for Harbor House Pet Kennel

St. Michael's is again collecting for the Paws for Peace Shelter at Harbor House.

Harbor House is Orange County's only state-certified domestic abuse service provider and seeks to eliminate domestic abuse in Central Florida. Harbor House has the only on-site kennel in Central Florida for the pets of domestic abuse survivors at its Emergency Campus. The Paws for Peace Kennel removes a key barrier to survivors seeking help and safety and ensures no family member is left behind in an abusive home.

We are seeking Dog Food, Cat Food, Kitty Litter, Treats, New Pet Beds and Toys.

You may drop off donations at the church office or bring them to the Blessing of the Pets on Oct. 6.

Jesus Me Amat, Huic Scio

Anyone care to take a stab at translating the subject line? It's Latin -- that dead language?  There are countless wonderful choral pieces that we sing written using a Latin text.  Our new members in the Youth Choir sing their first Latin choral piece this Sunday with the Full Choir, a setting of the words "Non Nobis Domine, Sed Nomini Tuo Da Gloriam."  The translation of the Latin: "Not unto me, O Lord, but unto Thy name be the glory."  Set as a 3 part round, it is a great example of how beauty can be found in simplicity.

Anyway, back to the translation of the subject line.  It is the first line of one of the most well-known Christian songs since the late 1800s -- "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know"!  We are singing it this coming Sunday as the Gospel hymn.  Interesting history:
  • "Jesus Loves Me" is a Christian hymn written by Anna Bartlett Warner (1827-1915).  The lyrics first appeared as a poem in the context of an 1860 novel called Say and Seal, written by her older sister Susan Warner (1819-1885) in which the words were spoken as a comforting poem to a dying child.  The tune was added in 1862 by William Batchelder Bradbury (1816-1868). Along with his tune, Bradbury added his own chorus "Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus Loves me..."  After publication as a song it became one of the most popular Christian hymns in churches around the world, especially among children.  In 1943 in the Solomon Islands, John F. Kennedy's PT-109 was rammed and sunk.  Islanders Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana who found Kennedy and the survivors remember that when they rode on PT boats to retrieve the survivors, the Marines sang this song with the natives, who had learned it from Seventh-Day Adventist missionaries.
  Soli Deo Gloria,
Director of Music Ministries Andrew Walker
