Help the Chamber raise funds to support tourism and visitor services activities at the Welcome Centre

Annually, the Chamber must fundraise to cover the difference in the amount received in student wage grants and municipal support for tourism and visitor services and the actual cost. That difference is about $12,000.

 

Your support of this fundraising tournament will:

  • Keep the Welcome Centre open
  • Make up that $12,000 shortfall
  • Nurture future customers for your business
  • Contribute to the community's vitality and growth
  • Over $70,000 was raised to purchase water filling stations for installation at 14 locations, including:

Visitor spending injects vitality into our community's economic health and prosperity. When businesses have revenue, they in turn can support service clubs, youth activities, hospital and church fundraisers and the many causes we as business owners get asked to support. 

 

According to the Travel Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO), visitors to our region will spend:

  • 31% on accommodation, 
  • 30% on retail purchases, 
  • 7% on restaurants, 
  • 4% on car rentals / transportation costs, 
  • 1% on attractions and 
  • 27% on other types of purchases.

Since 2011, we've selected a cover photo for the visitor guide from the hundreds of photos submitted to us through the Photo Contest. The winner gets $100 and bragging rights.

Getting Summer Student Workers to Local Jobs

Knowing many local businesses are in desperate need of summer staff, the Chamber's Past President Glen Baillie and Laura Greaves, Executive Director at Sarnia Lambton Workforce Development, have investigated possible solutions. 

Out of the Transit Steering Committee connections,  Laura Greaves connected with the Associate Dean of International Education, Hanna Eroglu, at Lambton College. 

Lambton College has a good number of foreign students, living and studying in Canada who are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week during the school term and full time outside of studies. Among those students are hospitality students. 

Working with their student council, Lambton College is willing to organize and coordinate transportation to get those students to this area to connect them with local employers.

We are in the process of sharing the needs and preferences of local employers regarding what days and time slots are best to utilize these students and working out the next steps to get students to local jobs.
