A one-of-a-kind gathering of leaders in the field of biomechanics distinguished the 2018 Richard O. Schuster, DPM Memorial Biomechanics Seminar, held November 10 and 11 at NYCPM. Barbara Resseque, DPM ('80), Professor of Pediatrics at NYCPM, relates this story of students who most likely saved a life in FCNY last spring:
Kudos to students Lauren Murphey and Brian Wolff  (both Class of 2019), for their  prompt diagnosis of a patient with a potentially life-threatening condition. On May 15, 2018, a 38-year-old male presented to the Foot Center of New York with a chief complaint of pain in his left leg. The pain had started three days earlier. On November 8, the entire ACFAS Board of Directors and senior NYCPM staff hosted a meeting of the ACFAS Student Club at NYCPM. The meeting included a clinical lecture about interesting cases presented by Larry Rubin, DPM, FACFAS, and a residency director panel discussion including Drs. Preparing Podiatrists for the "Silver Tsunami" -
The Tidal Wave of Geriatric Patients
At the Silver Tsunami seminar were NYCPM's Anthony R. Iorio, DPM, MPH, Assistant Dean for Continuing Medical Education; William Scherer, DPM; Allen M. Jacobs, DPM, the seminar's scientific chair; and Ronald Soave, DPM, NYCPM's Chair of the Department of Podiatric Medicine.
The subtitle of the first session of the Silver Tsunami seminar on Saturday, October 27 said it all: "Aging and the Expanding Role of the Podiatric Physician." The day-long seminar hosted by NYCPM focused on "improving management of geriatric patients," and concentrated specifically on: dermatologic issues, including malignancy; pharmacology in the elderly; vascular pathology and wound care; fall risk and neurological disorders; and ICD 10 considerations - improving access to care. The scientific chair and principal presenter was Allen M. Jacobs, DPM of St. Louis; William Scherer, DPM of Florida also presented, including a special lunchtime presentation "Behind the Scenes at a Dermopathology Lab." The event was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from BAKO Diagnostics, which NYCPM designated for this seminar.
