New Limud Halacha Initiative
TABC is excited to announce a new learning initiative specifically focusing on the study of practical halacha. Specifically, students will be learning through Rabbi Aharon Marcus' popular sefer "Halacha 24/7/12." Students in this program learn assigned chapters of the sefer based on a test schedule and take oral exams with Rabbi Jachter and other TABC Rebbeim to sharpen their knowledge of Halacha. We are proud of those talmidim who have taken it upon themselves to learn through this sefer in their free time to broader their Torah study. Students who are looking to join this program can click

TABC Takes Chesed on the Road with
Mission to
Columbia
, SC
|
Sunday Night, November 18 eight TABC students were led by Rabbi Jonathan Kessel and Rabbi Ezra Stone on a chesed mission to Columbia, South Carolina. Though they landed late at night, they eagerly awoke early in the morning to meet the SBP crew to finish renovation on a house that was severely damaged by the floods of 2015. (SBP is a national disaster relief organization.) The boys painted the walls, put up screening, scraped the windows and even finished a ceiling. They also got to see how Jews in South Carolina live, by enjoying the only kosher restaurant in downtown Columbia as well as bowling at The Grand. Before they departed, they visited the famous Riverwalk Zoo, home to a variety of endangered species and other interesting animals. The boys arrived home late Tuesday night exhausted but uplifted. Students Learn the
Art of Presentation in
Mrs. Goldenberg's Biology Class
|
Groups of students spent this week researching a particular topic relating to the living cell from microscopy to distinctions between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells to concepts in antibiotic resistance and much more. Following the research process students synthesized their data and developed captivating and creative slideshows to share with the class. Each presentation was created based on a series of guiding questions and students took turns sharing the concepts while gaining skills in public speaking. Students were enthusiastic and well prepared sharing detailed research on the subject matter. Collaborative group work broadens our students' approach to alternative methods of reviewing course concepts ultimately exposing them to different modalities and engaging all types of learners. We will be continuing these talks throughout the week.

TABC Welcomes 8th Graders for Special Mishmar Program
|
A little snow can't stop us! Although we had to postpone the program from its original Thursday night date do the surprise snow storm, the warmth of TABC permeated the building on Sunday night, November 25 as we welcomed
over 130 eighth grade students for a fun filled night. Numerous TABC rebbeim and current students - from freshmen to seniors, came out to meet this large group of prospective students and demonstrate what it means to be part of TABC. After a delicious Dougie's dinner, the eighth graders enjoyed participating in Torah learning - first in small group chaburot led by current students and then in a shiur given by TABC rebbeim. The evening concluded with the students' choice of basketball drills led by Rabbis Ezra Stone and Yitz Rabovsky, a hockey clinic with JV coach Norm Blumenthal or the game room including a chess match with Rabbi Shaya First. Many students also took advantage of an additional shiur that was given by Rabbi Ben Krinsky. Current students from all grades and prospective students alike, enjoyed meeting each other and learning together. It's wonderful to see students enjoying Torah, good food and fun recreational activities within the classic warmth of TABC. For more photos, click here.

Distinguished Scholars Program
|
Yisroel Ben Porat Visits
This past week, students in our Distinguished Scholars research program had the privilege of hearing a talk from Mr. Yisroel Ben Porat during one of our biweekly lunch and learns. Mr. Ben Porat is a graduate of Yeshiva University, where he specialized in the study of early American History, and won departmental awards for excellence in history. He is currently pursuing a PhD in history at City University researching the study of Hebrew in colonial American colleges. Mr. Ben Porat was eager to share his knowledge and research methods with the Distinguished Scholars, many of whom are presently working on their own independent research studies. Mr. Ben Porat's talk emphasized the key distinctions between primary and secondary sources in historical documents, a key first step to critically understanding the import and significance of a source. The students benefited tremendously through reviewing such concepts, and one student commented that "Mr. Ben Porat clarified areas of research that I otherwise was somewhat confused about." Mr. Ben Porat also serves as one of our volunteer mentors, who work one on one with the Distinguished Scholars students and help them navigate the research process in their areas of interest. It was an honor to welcome Mr. Ben Porat and we look forward to continued growth among our budding Distinguished Scholars.

Distinguished Scholars Head to YU
Sophomores in the TABC's Distinguished Scholars program traveled with Rabbi Shaya First last week to Yeshiva University to meet with their scholarship project mentors. While there, the boys had a chance to meet and shmooze with their mentors about the research topics that these scholars are working on this year. There was a broad range of conversation topics from the history of flags in America, to the range of perspectives on what will happen in Messianic times, to Talmudic demonology, or the role of antibiotic resistance in America's opioid epidemic, Students eagerly discussed their topics of research and interest with their YU mentors and a great time was had by all!

College Bowl Continues
Victory Streak
|
Continuing their winning ways, the marvelous mavens of the reigning Metropolitan Area League championship TABC Varsity and Junior Varsity College Bowl teams each won all of their matches at the New Jersey division meet on Tuesday, November 27th. Both teams handily defeated their opponents in matches held against Ma'ayanot, Kushner, Hillel and RTMA. Pumped up by their captains Ephraim Helfgot '20, Nathanael Vinar '19, Daniel Rothstein '20 and Avraham Kahan '19, and inspired and trained by veteran coach Manny Landau they played very spiritedly and effectively. Both teams are now in first place in their respective divisions, but are tied with rival Frisch with whom they have not yet competed. The next set of matches will be in February. After the meet, Manny noted how exciting it is to see our players compete with such enthusiasm combined with respect and mentschlichkeit and how well they reflect the values instilled in them by TABC. Go, Brainstorm Go!

Students Organize Farbrengen
in Honor of 19 Kislev
|
TABC students organized a Farbrengen during the Mincha break on Tuesday in honor of the Chassidic holiday, Yud-Tet Kislev, the 19th of Kislev. Shai Rosenberg made introductions and provided background on what we celebrate on Yud-Tet Kislev, then Rabbi Zev Reichman shared a historic and hashkafic understanding of the connection between the Alter Rebbe and Eretz Yisroel, and Avi Lebovic closed with Divrei Torah he learned from his grandfather highlighting an approach to Parshat Vayeshev through chassidus. Just like any serious Farbrengen, the speeches were interspersed with lively ruach including many classic Lubavitch nigunim, such as "Am Yisroel Have No Fear," "Ufaratzta," the Alter Rebbe's nigun, and "Didan Netzach". The bell for 10th period rang all too soon, and as the students cleaned up it was clear from their smiles and energy that they had gained an appreciation for the special nature of the day.

The program will also include a quick overview of Jewish life on college campuses by student representatives from carefully selected colleges that have been popular with our students. The second part of the program will feature a Jewish Life on Campus Fair where parents and students will have the opportunity to speak with the Rabbis and student representatives of Orthodox programs on college campuses. We have arranged for a great evening and we look forward to seeing you and your son there. (See flyer below.)

Rabbi Jachter's TABC Experience in Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale, Florida
|
It was a great TABC moment. Rabbi Jachter was visiting the Young Israel of Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale this past Shabbat as a scholar-in-residence and was scheduled to speak, among other places, at the congregation's Sephardic Minyan. All of a sudden into the room walked the entire Zecher family who were coming to celebrating the engagement of Mendy Zecher '08 to a member of the Sephardic Minyan, Ilana Ben Ezra. Rabbi Jachter quickly changed the topic of his Derasha to focus on the Zecher-Ben Ezra Simcha. Special mention was made of the respect and affection all of the TABC faculty and administration have for Mendy, the wonderful presence of Mendy's mother Marcy and for the special service Mendy's father Scott rendered as president of TABC for four years. Hashem works in subtle ways to create a very special moment for a beloved TABC alumnus and his wonderful fiance!

Frisch, TABC Wrestling Rivalry Continues
by Barry Schechter
On November 20th, the Frisch Cougars came to TABC for another chapter in their storied wrestling rivalry. Fans were not disappointed with the action, though Storm supporters might have been a little less enthusiastic, as Frisch pulled out an overall victory.
In contested matches, the two squads tied at 4-4. TABC junior Mike Schwartz (1) and seniors Gabe Greenberg (3), captain Max Schechter (2), and Asher Powers (4) all won with pins.
But the Cougars had four of their own impressive wins on a combination of pins and points. They pulled out a victory as they collected several forfeit wins from TABC. In unofficial exhibition matches, Frisch grapplers also came out ahead, 5-2.

TABC STORM Has an Amazing Week
This was an awesome week for our TABC Storm Athletic teams! Basketball, Hockey, and Wrestling all had big wins as their seasons are in full swing. Varsity Hockey got us started with a huge win at SAR as Charles Gibber owned the net, while the Gellman brothers helped provide much of the offense in a big 5-0 victory. The JV Basketball team continued their dominance with yet another resounding win over Kushner. Wrestling won their match at SAR on Wednesday night, and the team seems to be getting stronger as the season rolls along. Capping off the week we had what has been Varsity Basketball's most exciting game of the season as the Storm hosted the Heschel Heat (after defeating Ramaz earlier in the week). Heschel came into the game undefeated but that ended as the Storm won the game 63-60. Read more about our incredible winning streaks here
