GRANTS AT A GLANCE
The City of Largo recently applied for the following grants and funding opportunities in order to bring new (or continuing) funding into the City. Grants can provide valuable resources that can be used to carry out projects or provide services the City would not otherwise be able to provide. Grants allow the City to expand programs and create new programs that are in alignment with the Strategic Plan in order to better serve City residents.

Grant Award Received:

  • Police Department: Walmart Foundation’s Shop-With-A-Cop for Store #3372 at 2677 Roosevelt Blvd. - $2,500

Applied for Technical Assistance to support City Projects – Application approved by USF:

  • Communications and Marketing on behalf of multiple City Departments: FY 2018-2019 USF Community Sustainability Partnership Program – Proposed projects will be completed by university professors and students during the Spring 2019 term

BEST OF LARGO AWARDS
As part of Largo Small Business Month for the month of November, the City partners with the Largo Leader on the Best of Largo contest, an event where the community can vote online for their favorite Largo business. The contest has four categories: businesses and service, retail, restaurant, and home-based business. The voting closed on November 15th, the votes were tallied and the winners for the 2018 Best of Largo Awards are:

  • Business and service: CrossFit TFB, located at 50th Third Street NW.
  • Retail: The Thrift Shop of Largo, located at12499 Seminole Boulevard.
  • Restaurant: Culver’s of Largo, located at 3500 East Bay Drive.
  • Home-based business, Mama Bear Cleaning in Largo.

The winners will be invited to be recognized during the ceremonial portion of the January 8, 2019 City Commission meeting.

PROJECT UPDATES
TROTTER ROAD CONSTRUCTION
This weekend’s St. Patrick Church Fun Fair, at the northeast corner of Trotter Road and Dryer Avenue, will be minimally affected by construction as Dryer Road re-opened well ahead of schedule. The Fun Fair includes entertainment, rides, food and beverages, and a marketplace. Dryer Avenue traffic may be heavier than normal during the Fun Fair (November 29 – December 2).

UPCOMING EVENTS
AN OLD FASHIONED CHRISTMAS PARADE
The 8th Annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade returns on December 15, 2018 at noon. Hosted by volunteers and downtown Largo business owners, the neighborhood parade will feature dancers, decorated cars and floats, participation from elected officials, various Largo businesses, non-profits, community organizations, and a special visit by Santa. The parade route begins at the corner of 4th Street SW and 1st Avenue SW, traverses southbound along 4th St SW, eastward along 7th Ave SW, and northward along 2nd Street SW. The procession ends at Ulmer Park with a variety of food trucks. The parade volunteer organizers have been awarded a grant in the amount of $1,500 to cover permitting fees and off-duty police services.
