Earth Day is Coming

April 22, 2020 will mark the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day began in San Francisco in 1970 and has since inspired many environmental regulations, community clean-ups, and an overall appreciation for our beautiful and astounding planet.

Please visit the City's Earth Day web page for interesting online events and ideas for actions to protect our planet, including:
  • A 50th Anniversary proclamation by our City Council
  • A Zoom event hosted by the Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame on eating less meat - one of the simplest and most impactful climate actions a person can take
  • Ideas for 50 actions for 50 years we can do from home for the environment.

Please continue to take care of your health and the environment by staying distant.
Allowable Construction Activities During Shelter-in-Place Order

The revised County Health Officer Order from March 31 clarifies (and restricts) allowed construction activities. These are the only construction activities allowed:

  • Projects immediately necessary to the maintenance, operation, or repair of Essential Infrastructure;

  • Projects associated with Healthcare Operations, including creating or expanding Healthcare Operations, provided that such construction is directly related to the COVID-19 response;

  • Affordable housing that is or will be income-restricted, including multi-unit or mixed-use developments containing at least 10% income-restricted units;

  • Public works projects if specifically designated as an Essential Governmental Function by the lead governmental agency;

  • Shelters and temporary housing, but not including hotels or motels;

  • Projects immediately necessary to provide critical non-commercial services to individuals experiencing homelessness, elderly persons, persons who are economically disadvantaged, and persons with special needs;

  • Construction necessary to ensure that existing construction sites that must be shut down under this Order are left in a safe and secure manner, but only to the extent necessary to do so; and,

  • Construction or repair necessary to ensure that residences and buildings containing Essential Businesses are safe, sanitary, or habitable to the extent such construction or repair cannot reasonably be delayed;

This is a change from the first version of the Health Officer Order, which had previously allowed housing as a category to be deemed essential. Now, only housing that has 10% or more income-restricted units are considered essential. In Burlingame, these projects are considered essential:
3.     1509 El Camino Real
4.     The Village at Burlingame (City Parking Lots F&N)
