There are six options for joining a Team or Group.

1-A. Spiritual Growth Design Team Phase II

This Design Team will identify, design, and implement opportunistic activities and programs that will enable significant spiritual growth in the lives of our clergy, lay leaders, and members of the congregations. This Design Team will consider questions like:

How might we help our leaders and congregations find their connection with God?
How might we encourage a Diocesan-wide spiritual revival that will draw people to joyful faith and the presence of Jesus in our churches?

1-B. 'Ohana Design Team Phase II

This Design Team work will address any operational issues such as clarifying and refining the roles and processes and practices we use to work together, to find ways to make the work both more efficient, and more importantly, more a form of worship in action. This Design Team will consider questions like:

How might we increase cooperative efforts among clergy and lay leaders?
What leads us to care about each other and work together?
How might we invite people to take up key roles and give them the tools they need to be successful?
How might we help people overcome their tendency to be separated by geographic, personal, ethnic, and sociological differences?

1-C. Communications Design Team Phase II

This Design Team will address the language of the Church that explains our relationship with God that establishes the basis of our relationship with each other and the world, and how our Story as Episcopalians can be best shared with the broader community. This Design Team will consider questions like:

What is our shared identity?
What is our unifying Story (this goal grew out of a realization that all the media tools in the world cannot compensate for a lack of common understanding of the meaning of the Story that defines us as Christians and Episcopalians in Hawaiʻi)?
What informs our understanding of God and discipleship?

2-A. Worship Task Group

At the 2018 General Convention, Bishops were specifically urged [in Resolution A068 (click HERE to view)] to engage "...worshiping communities in experimentation and the creation of alternative texts to offer to the wider church, and that each diocese be urged to create a liturgical commission to collect, reflect, teach and share these resources with the TFLPBR" (Task Group on Liturgical and Prayer Book Revision). The same resolution, also, "memorialize[d] the 1979 Book of Common Prayer as a Prayer Book of the church preserving the psalter, liturgies, The Lambeth Quadrilateral, Historic Documents, and Trinitarian Formularies ensuring its continued use" and affirmed that the Church would continue "to engage the deep Baptismal and Eucharistic theology and practice of the 1979 Prayer Book."

The resolution is nuanced and calls the Church to well-ordered and communal liturgical renewal. It also instructs that any liturgical revision to "utilize the riches of Holy Scripture and our Church's liturgical, cultural, racial, generational, linguistic, gender, physical ability, class and ethnic diversity in order to share common worship."

This Worship Task Group will help the Bishop establish guidelines with limits of use for experimental liturgies and a means for their evaluation. Liturgical revision happens within a broader community rather than an isolated congregation alone or as designed by an individual. Such liturgical revision ought never be the work of individuals or a unique creation in an isolated congregation. This Task Group will have five to seven members and do most of the work electronically.

2-B. Reconciliation Task Group

There were several resolutions and presentations of reconciliation in the broadest terms at 2018 General Convention. There were three keys areas for discussion and reflection: (a) Racial Reconciliation, (b) Sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, and (c) The Church's historic response and/or non-response to such issues. The intertwining of the three areas are about awareness, power, control, repentance, and amendment of life - as individuals, as a Church, and as a society.

Recognizing that these concerns are broad and deep, this Task Group will need to help develop a plan for the Diocese to seriously address the issues of reconciliation over the course of the next few years. This work will require sub-groups. This group will require five to seven members to get started and will do most of their initial work electronically.

2-C. Creation Care Task Group

In fulfillment of a resolution adopted at the 2018 Annual Meeting of Convention (view resolution HERE), this Task Group will "address the scientific, cultural, theological and ethical realities of climate change, and its impact on our Islands and the world." The Bishop has stated that "no single issue impacts us more immediately as human beings entrusted by God with the care of creation who have a responsibility to future generations." To address the reality, however, will require changes in behavior at both societal and individual levels.

This Task Group will begin with five to seven members and do most of their work electronically.

The submission due date is: Friday, December 14, 2018; 5:00 PM

The ordination of the Rev. Ha'aheo Guanson, Transitional Deacon, to the Presbyterate will be on Saturday, March 9, 2019, 10:00 AM at The Parish of St. Clement, Honolulu.

Clergy Transitions: The Rev. Irene Tanabe

The Rev. Irene Tanabe, Rector of Church of the Epiphany in Honolulu, has been called to serve as a Missioner from the Diocese of Hawai'i to serve as Rector of All Soul's Anglican Episcopal Church in Okinawa, Japan. In a letter to the congregation, Rev. Tanabe shares how All Soul's was originally founded as a mission to Americans by our own Rt. Rev. Edmund Browning when he was a young priest, and is a church that has a long history with the Diocese of Hawai'i. We wish Rev. Tanabe well and thank her for her faithful service in the Diocese for the past five years.

Annual Christmas Craft Fair & Rummage Sale at St. Luke's

St. Luke's Episcopal Church's Women's Guild will be holding their annual Christmas Craft Fair and Rummage Sale on Saturday, December 8, 2018, in the church Parish Hall, from 8:00 AM-2:00 PM. Come and get some Christmas shopping done or find some great bargains! Proceeds will go to support St. Luke's ministries. St. Luke's is located at 45 N. Judd Street in Honolulu.

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on Maui will be holding their annual Holiday Fun'd Fair on Saturday, December 15, 2018, from 8:00 AM-1:00 PM. Advent Resources: Journeying the Way of Love and Preparing to Become the Beloved Community

[November 2, 2018] This Advent, the Episcopal Church invites congregations, dioceses, and communities of faith to await the coming of Christ by moving through the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke. Luke's gospel provides a pattern for understanding how to live the way of love as individuals, as families and friends, as a community, and out in the world.

Advent curriculum: Journeying the Way of Love

Journeying the Way of Love is a new, four-week Advent curriculum pegged to readings and themes from the Sunday lectionary. Sessions are designed for use during the Christian formation hour offerings at churches and ministries exploring the Way of Love.

Participants are encouraged to read and reflect on the passages in Luke throughout Advent and "try on" the spiritual practices of the Way of Love. The Journey of Love Advent Calendar offers daily suggestions for engaging in the seven practices that encompass the Way of Love.

Advent Curriculum:Preparing to Become the Beloved Community

Advent is a season of preparation; a time to prepare our hearts and communities for the coming of Christ, the Almighty God who came among us poor and homeless, a stranger and a child. There may be no better time to reflect on how we, as the Episcopal Church, embrace the Holy One who continues to draw near in the neighbor, the stranger, the refugee, or the one who seems the most "other" to you. It is the ideal season to commit to becoming the Beloved Community and growing loving, liberating, life-giving relationships across the human family of God.

The journey is framed around the four quadrants of the labyrinth: Telling the truth about our churches and race; proclaiming the dream of the beloved community; practicing the way of love in the pattern of Jesus; and repairing the breach in institutions and society. Groups are invited to "walk" sections of the labyrinth each week in Advent, engaging in scripture, reflections, and activities.

Diocesan Bible Study to Prepare for the Presiding Bishop's Visit to the Diocese in March 2019

The Most Reverend Michael Curry, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, will be with us in the Diocese of Hawaiʻi on March 22-24, 2019. Please mark your calendars particularly for Friday (March 22), Saturday (March 23) and Sunday (March 24). More information about the visit will be forthcoming. I pray this will be a time of renewal in the Diocese.

To prepare for the Presiding Bishop's visit, I invite all members of the Diocese to prepare for a time of prayer and study of Scripture. I specifically want us to study and pray through the Gospel of Matthew from Monday, October 15, 2018, through Thursday, March 21, 2019. .

TENS Education Day Coming Up

The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) will be holding a special workshop on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in the Von Holt Room.

Leading this session is Richard Felton, Executive Director for TENS, and the theme is Transforming Generosity. TENS is an association of church leaders who understand, practice and proclaim God's call to generosity. On the TENS website ( https://www.tens.org/ ) their stated purpose is "Helping People Live Generously." Their vision is to provide training and resources for stewardship leaders across the Episcopal Church, around the following core competencies:

This special event is open to all in the Diocese, and those involved or interested in Stewardship are encouraged to attend. The cost is only $15 and includes lunch.

Airfare will be covered for clergy, treasurers and stewardship chairs on the neighbor islands. Those approved for travel may make their reservations through Sharon Billingsley. For more information and t o register, click HERE.

Hawaiian Book of Common Prayer & Gospels

The Office of the Bishop is once again m

aking available two Hawaiian-language books to enhance your worship experience. Both books make exquisite gifts:

Cloth-bound in red with gold foil stamping, the attractive Hawaiian-Language Book of Common Prayer contains over 400 pages of translated biblical scripture, liturgical prayers, and orders service, including King Kamehameha IV's Preface. This limited edition reprint of the prayer book was issued by the Episcopal Church in Hawai'i to celebrate its sesquicentennial that took place in 2012.

Na 'Euanelio Hemolele, is a lectionary-size book containing the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, in the Hawaiian-language, complete with diacritical marks. The book was a project of the Rev. Cn. Malcolm Naea Chun, 20 years in the making, and whose publication was funded by the Diocese's Commission on Native Hawaiian Ministry. The book was originally released in 2003, and is bound in white hard-cover with gold foil stamping.

St. Andrew's Schools Establishes Scholarship for Episcopalians

In the spirit of our common royal and Episcopal heritage, St. Andrew's Schools would like to offer a $1,500 scholarship to The Priory or The Prep, to children of members in good standing of any Episcopal Church in Hawai'i. Members must obtain a reference letter/form with signature from the priest of the church, or if moving to Hawai'i, a letter from the church they left most recently. This letter/form must be provided at the time the student applies for admission to St. Andrew's Schools. Download the informational flyer HERE.
