Kentucky Artisan Center Exhibits and Demonstrations

Juxtaposition by Ray Papka
(Through December 31, 2018)
This exhibit features mixed media artist Ray Papka whose works combine assemblage, encaustic painting, use of books as substrates and a wide array of intricate embellishments. Papka generates layers of information and mystery from his observations, events and the influence of science in his life.
With degrees in zoology, chemistry, anatomy and neuroscience, Papka brings the discipline of science and his ability to hone in on a subject directly to his artwork. Beginning with an idea, he selects objects from his vast collection and builds upon this idea with objects, layers of wax, pigment and imagery.
Papka's background, travels and experiences have been wide and varied. He has taught at numerous universities in the U.S. including 10 years at the University of Kentucky, as well as Universities in Denmark and Hungary.
Papka's intellectual process influences how he creates his artwork.
"He is a deep thinker," states journalist Austyn Gaffney, "and he works through his own thoughts, memories, hopes and fears when he creates his pieces."
Papka states, "From my early childhood I have been fascinated with books and unusual objects. My love of books influenced my decision to recycle them in an altered form and I continually utilize themes involving text."
Innovators
(Through February 28, 2019)
The Kentucky Artisan Center Presents "Innovators: Stephen Rolfe Powell & Arturo Alonzo Sandoval" to recognize two internationally known Kentucky Artists who have been innovators in their respective fields. Both Powell and Sandoval have expanded boundaries by utilizing unusual materials and pushing their mediums into new and exciting formats.
Powell, who is known for his large and intricately patterned and colorful blown glass, has recently begun to arrange and fuse colorful sliced murrini onto a large flat canvas of glass. After the color fuses, he slumps the entire piece into a concave freestanding wall of color. These new glass walls called "Zoomers" take Powell's work into the realm of architecture.
Powell's blown glass is also adorned with intricate murrini colors and patterns. His new blown glass vessels twist and turn - with necks evolved to support the visually floating forms.
Sandoval is known for weaving with a wide variety of unusual materials. His large woven works are made from recycled auto industry Mylar, recycled library 35 mm microfilm, netting, Holographic film, Pellon and numerous other industrial materials.
Sandoval's background is both Hispanic and Native American and it provides clues into his interest in the fiber arts. His mother wove countless blankets and the men on his paternal grandmother's side wove colonial Spanish textiles. Even though his family wove textiles, Sandoval's works are monumental in size. His subject matter reflects current social and cultural themes and the works in this exhibit offer his reflection on the world of technology.
Saturday Demonstrations and Festivities
December 1- Mike Ware, of Hindman, will demonstrate pottery on the wheel for visitors from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center. Ware is a professor of art at Alice Lloyd College and his work is regularly available at the Center.

exington musicians Stephanie Reams, Jana Gillham, Pat Ham and Heather Toews of the musical group Rahab's Rope will play a selection of holiday music on keyboards, guitar and violin, singing from 11am to 2pm
The group's CD "Rahab's Rope" and their Christmas CD "Let There Be Light" are available at the center.
December 8-
Jamie Donaldson, of Georgetown, will demonstrate wood turning on the lathe from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Ketucky Artisan Center. Donaldson is active as a woodturning educator and workshop leader throughout the region. He specializes in asymmetrical forms in unusual woods.
Harpist Jan Hill, of Lexington, will perform favorite holiday songs on the harp from 11am to 2pm at the Center. Hill has performed throughout the region and has several CD's available at the Center
Former Kentucky poet laureate George Ella Lyon will sign copies of her books from 11am to 2pm Lyon is well known for her poetry, children's books and for her book A Kentucky Christmas. Her writings are regularly available at the Center.
December 15- Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will be on hand to demonstrate their individual carving techniques and talk with visitors from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
These Central-Kentucky artisans demonstrate on the third Saturday of every month at the Kentucky Artisan Center.
Kentucky authors will sign copies of their books from 11am to 2pm. Children's book author Jim Shields will sign copies of Skylar's Wonderland, Starbird's Special Gift and Welcome Baby Bunnies. Author Evelyn Christensen will sign copies of her children's book, The 12 Days of Christmas in Kentucky.
December 22- Donna Smith, from Waco, will create traditional cornshuck Nativity scenes and figures from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Smith is the niece of the late well-known cornshuck artist Edna Ritchee who taught Smith how to make cornshuck dolls, figures and flowers. Using gourds for the backdrop, Smith places nativity figures within.
December 29-
Carl Von Fischer, of Mount Vernon, will demonstrate oil painting from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center. In 1992, Carl moved to Kentucky to be near his son and grandchildren. Here he began painting full-time. Carl likes to paint landscapes and animals and he uses a palette knife often to layer and apply the oil paint and delineate grasses, foreground, and trees.

Artist Statement: My work re-examines the grand metaphorical narrative as a way of exploring both personal content and universal themes within the contemporary human experience. I do this through creating large scale multi-figure drawings and paintings. My narratives present a mixed cast of mythical, iconic, historical, and modern-day characters, each one playing specific a role in an unfolding story and shared environment. I view the paper as a stage for me to present characters, juxtapose roles, and draw connections that literally and figuratively tie the characters in the narrative together. Composing in a metaphorical language gives me the freedom to address a variety of heavy, complex, yet all-pervasive themes without forcing a singular message on the viewer.

Guided Hikes
The Forestry Outreach Center will be hosting guided hikes on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at The Pinnacles and on Sundays at Brushy Fork, weather permitting. A Forestry Outreach Center volunteer or staff member will lead educational hikes on varying trails in the Berea College Forest.
