TOP STORIES
   HOLY APOSTLES THADDEUS AND BARTHOLOMEW,
FIRST ILLUMINATORS OF ARMENIA

Saint Thaddeus - St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and a relative of Our Saviour. Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem. He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of the East, particularly the Jewish converts, directed against the heresies of the Simonians, Nicolaites, and Gnostics. This Apostle suffered martyrdom in Armenia. The final conversion of the Armenian nation to Christianity did not take place until the third century of our era.

Saint Bartholomew-
His name is patronymic, meaning "son of Tolmai". Sometimes he is identified with Nathaneal whom Phillip led to Christ. According to the historian Eusebius, when Pantainus of Alexandria visited India between 150 and 200 A. D., he found there the Gospel according to Matthew left behind by Bartholomew one of the Apostles. According to tradition, Bartholomew was flayed and crucified upside down at Albanapolis in Armenia.
PARISH NEWS
Advent Bible Study

St. Mary Church held its second Bible Study session on Tuesday, November 27 entitled "The Refining Love of God"
(Malachi 2:17-3:5).  During this year's Bible Study we take a Journey Through Advent with the Old Testament Prophets. The Christmas story began in the Old Testament. God's nature didn't change, nor did ours, and He had our redemption in mind all the time. The prophets Jeremiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, and Micah all proclaim the Christ that was to come.

The group of 12 people enjoyed the insightful Bible readings and discussion led by Eric Ashbahian. All parishioners are invited to attend the Bible Study at St. Mary Church to help celebrate the season of Advent and prepare their hearts and mind for Christmas.

The next Bible Study will take place on Tuesday, December 4 and the title of the study  is "God's Protection and Delight" (Zephaniah 3:14-20). We hope you will join us at the forthcoming Bible Studies - please refer to the flyer for more information.

DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS
Conference at Etchmiadzin Considers "The Church in a Changing World"

On November 23-25, a conference was held at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin's "His Holiness Karekin I Theological Center," titled "The Church in a Changing World: Challenges and Perspectives." The three-day event went forward with the blessings of His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, and was organized in partnership with a local NGO.

Archbishop Nathan Hovhannisyan, the Mother See's director of External Church Relations, opened the conference by welcoming participating clergy and laymen. He delivered an address that viewed issues of Christian morality through the prism of law versus faith.

The conference included sessions on such topics as "Anti-Christian Manifestations in Today's World," "Secularism and Morality in the 21st Century," "Christian Values in Interpersonal Relationships," "Moral Issues in the Context of the Armenian Church," and "The Christian Family in Modern Society."

A Museum-Inspired Prayer Service

In collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, St. Vartan Cathedral held a special liturgical program on the evening of Tuesday, November 27.

The special "vespers" (evening hour) service gave participants a glimpse into the spiritual environment that gave rise to the artworks on display at the Met's "Armenia!" exhibit.

Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan presided and spoke, with area clergy, St. Nersess seminarians, and the Cathedral Choir participating.

Metropolitan Museum scholar Dr. Helen Evans-curator of the "Armenia!" exhibit-and her students attended the service, along with about 200 people: museum members, locals from the cathedral's Midtown neighborhood, as well as faithful from the Armenian community.

In Memoriam: The Rev. Fr. Diran Papazian (1920-2018)

With the deep sorrow, the Eastern Diocese mourns the loss of the Rev. Fr. Diran Avak Kahana Papazian, who passed away on November 21, after nearly a century of life.

Fr. Diran was a gentle pastor of the flock of our Diocese for 60 years: a man of learning, literary talent, grace-and above all profound trust in Jesus Christ. He was blessed to share his life, and indeed his ministry, with his dear wife, the late Yeretzgin Rosalie. The two were deeply beloved by people across our Diocese, and we can be assured that they are now together again, at rest in our Lord.

Visiting hours for Fr. Papazian will be held at the St. John Armenian Church (22001 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield, MI) on Monday, December 3, from 4 to 8 p.m.; and on Tuesday, December 4, from 3 to 9 p.m. The dahn gark (wake) service will be on December 4 at 7:30 p.m.

The Divine Liturgy and Final Anointing will be held on Wednesday, December 5, at St. John Church, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Diocesan Primate Fr. Daniel Findikyan preside over the service. Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Diocesan Legate and Ecumenical Director, will perform the Final Anointing.

In-lieu-of-flowers donations in Fr. Papazian's name may be made to the "Reverend Fr. Diran and Yeretzgin Rosalie Papazian Endowment" (c/o St. John Church) or to St. Nersess Armenian Seminary (486 Bedford Rd., Armonk, NY 10504).

May the Lord bless the soul of his servant, and bring consolation to his loved ones in the days ahead.
Choices: Poor in Spirit
Choices: Poor in Spirit
New Choices Video

In the latest episode of Choices, Fr. Tateos Abdalian considers the issue of poverty, and its meaning in the Gospel. Christ's preaching made people re-evaluate the "spiritual" significance of impoverishment. Surrounded by a world of material poverty, Christ drew attention to man's poverty of soul, as well.

It's a lesson that still resonates with people today. Are you rich or poor? Consider that question as you watch "Poor in Spirit."

  BIBLE READING
1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.
(Luke 13.1-9)
