Dee Hankins

Dee will share his inspiring life story with our students next week where he will encourage them to focus on their resilience.  At two months old, Dee was placed in foster care.  By the time he was 12, he had been in 12 different foster homes.  He believed that no one cared about him, until he received a call from a college sponsorship program.  Their persistence changed his view on life and helped him see that there were people in the world who cared.

He went on to graduate from California State University with a B.S. in Criminal Justice.  His mission is to show every student that they have a chance at a successful future...no matter their background.  He speaks to thousands of students a year.  Dee inspires students to be resilient by changing their perspective on failure.  He does this by sharing his story of resilience, along with his daughter's fight to beat cancer.  Life throws curve-balls, but even curve-balls can be hit for home runs!

I am confident that everyone is off to a good start in the second semester.   As always, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher, school counselor, grade level principal, or me with any questions throughout the remainder of the year.

Thanks,
Jeff
Important Notes:

NRHS Scheduling
Current 8th grade students will receive materials from high school counselors regarding the scheduling process on Tuesday, January 21.  There is a parent meeting for scheduling at 7:00 PM in the high school PAC on Wednesday, January 22.  8th grade students will then begin scheduling on Monday, February 3.

NRMS Scheduling
5th - 7th grade students will be learning about the scheduling process from our school counselors.  After a scheduling overview is presented by our school counselors, they will meet with each student individually throughout the coming months to talk about academics, career exploration, and social/emotional development.  Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the scheduling process.

Winter Tailgate
The Winter Tailgate is a great way for all students to get involved at NRMS.  Students can purchase wristbands for $ 5.00 in the main office starting on Tuesday, January 21.  The ticket provides students with pizza, water, and chips during the tailgate along with entrance into the 8th grade girls and boys basketball games on Thursday, January 23.  Once the game starts, students can be picked up at any time from the Gold Gym.  At the conclusion of the second game at approximately 6:15 PM, all remaining students should be picked up at the front of the school.  We encourage all who attend the tailgate to stay for both basketball games.

Winter Benchmarking
Students received their winter STAR benchmarking reports today.  These documents provide a snapshot of where your son or daughter is at in both reading and math.
