The growth of cashless purchases is no longer the big news for vending and micro market operators. The future, according to one of the featured speakers at this year’s Atlantic Coast Exposition in Myrtle Beach, S.C., is mobile payments, which eliminate the need for a credit or debit card.

“Everything will be virtual payments,” Bill Bartholic, Northeast regional sales director for USA Technologies Inc. , told his listeners. In five to 10 years, all payments, including unattended retailing, will be virtual.

A recent survey of 1,020 consumers by the research firm TSYS confirmed that mobile wallets are gaining on card payments. Eighty-percent of mobile wallet owners use the wallets to stop an unauthorized transaction, while 72 percent use them to instantly review their transactions and 59 percent use them to receive location-based offers and promotions.

Quotidian Engineering & Development, a Lewes, Del. based technology development company, has acquired the intellectual property for a blockchain based payment token for unattended merchandising from Upstate Networks Inc.

Upstate Networks Inc ., a Utica, N.Y. based computer engineering, design and manufacturing firm, developed the Ethereum based token, PLUM (payment layer for unattended merchandising), for vending, self check-out, car wash and laundry systems.

The PLUM hardware allows a vending operator to begin accepting bitcoin and other established cryptocurrencies, which are becoming increasingly popular with consumers. It also gives the operator the ability to create their own cryptocurrency, which could prove a helpful marketing tool.

The new Café CURVE door from Vendors Exchange International features an interactive, backlit, 21.5-inch touchscreen and provides customers a variety of customizable drinks and cup sizes. Vending and micro market operators can add selections with an assortment of cup sizes and can upcharge for additional flavors or condiments. The unit is ADA compliant.

The Café CURVE allows vending and micro market operators to update existing coffee machines for a fraction of the cost of adding a new machine.

Vendors Exchange International Inc. provides remanufactured vending equipment, replacement parts, graphics and electronic repair.

Primo Water has chosen Nayax as the exclusive cashless payment technology provider for its outdoor filtered drinking water or refill machines. Primo Water will be installing Nayax’s VPOS Touch devices on approximately 17,000 outdoor refill machines. VPOS Touch will allow Primo Water customers to choose from a wide variety of EMV-certified or chip-card cashless payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and mobile payment apps, such as Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard and more.

Nayax’s management system capabilities will provide the ability to remotely monitor its outdoor refill machines and ensure its machines are in continuous operation. The system will deliver tailored notifications based on defined thresholds when a refill machine experiences a power outage, or when there is a machine error based on their specifications. This will allow field managers to send service technicians to the refill machine, thus reducing downtime.

Interac Corp . has renewed On Track Innovation Ltd. 's certification as a cashless payment solutions provider. The certification allows Canadian businesses to integrate OTI's cashless payment solutions into vending machines, kiosks, ATMs and other unattended devices.

Interac Corp. operates one of Canada's leading payments brands and is chosen an average of 16 million times daily to pay and exchange money.

"Canada has over 59,000 automated teller machines and over 450,000 merchant locations accessible through the Interac network, making this certification essential to doing business in Canada,” said Shlomi Cohen, CEO of OTI.
