CDO Workforce Success Story
"
We have a success story to share regarding a 24-year-old young lady, married with 2 young children.
Her family was receiving TANF. To qualify for TANF benefits clients must complete work requirements and attend regular meetings with their Employment and Training Counselor.
She developed a resume utilizing knowledge and resources offered through the CDO Workforce office. She attended weekly work search workshops where she received counseling and coaching with applying for positions.
Other topics covered in the weekly workshops included interviewing skills, soft skills, personal finance, budgeting, and networking among other topics.
She was placed at partner agency to complete a Work Experience Placement (WEP) program. WEPs allow clients to gain "real world" experience in real work environments. It allows clients to gain skills that employers would find valuable and provides opportunities for clients to experience and practice managing work-life balance. Supportive services in the form of bus passes or mileage reimbursement were utilized so she could get to the workshops and her WEP assignment.
By working hard and staying positive she found full time employment at a local business through a local staffing agency, Employment Solutions. She is now working 40 hours a week with an opportunity for over time.
Skills she learned from her WEP and the workshops have made her transition into the "real world" of work more enjoyable, less stressful and a valued employee."

New Social Security Entitlement Workshops at CDO
By: Alan Sessions and Kathy DeAngelo
Disability Resource Coordinators
On October 9, 2018, CDO Workforce hosted a series of Social Security Entitlement Workshops presented by the NYS Office of Mental Health. The event was well attended with over 25 participants, including local residents and employees from human services agencies. Topics included PASS Plans, Medicaid coverage, and SSA Forms and Resources. Most attendees stayed for all 3 presentations.
Kate Hewlett, a Peer Engagement Specialist from Otsego County Community Services, introduced the project to CDO and attended all of the sessions. She provided the following feedback:
"I am very excited about the collaboration between OMH and CDO Workforce in hosting ongoing workshops about Social Security Entitlement Programs. It is important that folks receiving these benefits know the different incentives and are not fearful or skeptical to go back to work. I was told for many years, by many uneducated folks, that I would lose my SSDI benefits by returning to work, even part time. That is so NOT true and one of the biggest myths out there. If someone wants to get a job, any job of their choice, and wants to get the most out of their time receiving SSA benefits, then these workshops are for them. I look forward to working with Garrett Smith and his team, to offer more exciting, interactive SSA benefit workshops in 2019.
The participants (who came from 4 different counties!) were very engaged throughout the 3 different workshops and asked many, well thought out questions and comments. The 3 presenters brought all of their wisdom, knowledge, and experience on these topics, which made the workshops, fun, exciting, and very fast paced. While these workshops are open to the general public, it is my greatest hope that our wonderful community agencies can provide accurate information to encourage beneficiaries to learn more. Inspired people can be empowered to make informed decisions that support their overall wellness and employment-seeking goals, resulting in a life of their choosing. Social Security benefits are a wonderful financial support, when needed, and these Work Incentives and supports are an empowering way to transition back to the workforce and off of public benefits."
Due to the positive feedback, we plan to present these workshops on a bi-monthly basis in 2019.
The next Workshop Series is scheduled for Friday, January 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Oneonta CDO Workforce Office. The following flyer has specific details and times. All workshops are free of charge and you can attend 1, 2 or all 3!

New Compliance Assistance Tools for New & Small Businesses |
DOL Announces New Compliance Assistance Tools
for New and Small Businesses
DOL says these new online tools assist American small businesses and workers with simple, straightforward resources that provide critical Wage and Hour Division (WHD) information, as well as links to other resources.
The webpages were established in response to feedback received from new and small business stakeholders voicing their need for a centralized location to secure the tools and information they need to comply with federal labor laws.
These new webpages provide the most relevant publications and answer the questions most frequently asked by new and small business owners. These tools, in conjunction with worker.gov and employer.gov, ensure greater understanding of federal requirements and provide tools to help employers find resources offered by other regulatory agencies.
"The Wage and Hour Division has long understood that the majority of employers want to do the right thing and comply with the law, but they need to know how," said the Wage and Hour Division's Acting Administrator Bryan Jarrett. "These new webpages demonstrate our ongoing commitment to proactively help employers comply with the law and provide them the tools they need to understand their responsibilities. We encourage all employers to visit these new webpages and reach out to us for assistance at any time."
I
n addition to these new resources, WHD recently made available
compliance assistance videos that provide
brief, plain-language explanations of the
Fair Labor Standards Act's (FLSA) requirements and protections. The videos

New Farmers Grant Accepting Applications
From Early-Stage Farmers
Empire State Development (ESD) and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets have announced that $1 million in funding is available to assist early-stage farmers through the New York State New Farmers Grant Fund.
The program, now in its fifth year, promotes growth and development in the state's agriculture industry.
"Agriculture is vital to New York State's economy, and the New Farmers Grant Fund supports our early stage farmers by promoting projects that increase overall farm profitability and ensure sustainability of farming operations," says ESD President, CEO and Commissioner Howard Zemsky.
The $1 million New Farmers Grant Fund will provide grants of up to $50,000 to assist with up to 50 percent of eligible project costs.
To qualify, all farm business owners must be within the first ten years of having an ownership interest in any farm business, and the farm must have a minimum of $10,000 in income from sales of products grown or raised on the farm.
Eligible project costs include the purchase of machinery, equipment, supplies, and the construction or improvement of agricultural structures.
Applications and guidelines for the New Farmers Grant Fund are
available online. The deadline for submission is January 25, 2019.

To further support the State's new and beginning farmers, the Department of Agriculture & Markets launched a New and Beginning Farmer One Stop Shop in 2017. The web-based resource helps new and beginning farmers connect to the resources and services that can help their businesses thrive. Information can be found online here.
