Snow Days:
Why & How we decide to close
Dear Académie Lafayette Families,
As you know making a decision to close is not an easy one as we need to consider different factors:
- Safety: First and foremost we need to seriously consider the safety of our students. The bus company will always tell us whether it is safe for their buses to get to some neighborhoods. If they do not want to take any risk we cannot open the school,
- Attendance: If we open the school and ask parents to drive their kids to school, our attendance rate can drop significantly. It can affect our Annual Performance Report as attendance is part of DESE school accountability system.
Last year, we were the only public school open one particular snow day. As a result, our attendance rate went down and our teachers had to reteach their lessons for the many students that were absent.
As you can see it is not always easy to find a workable solution. As an Académie Lafayette parent myself, I do not like to keep my kids from attending school. However, we have to consider many things before making the decision to open the school.
Also, I would like to thank the many Grandparents and volunteers for a successful Generations Day at Armour and to the AL p
arents for providing the wonderful 'Thankful Thursday' to our staff.
Thanks again for your continued support of our school.

From The Cherry principal
Thankful Cherry!
So much to be thankful for last week and this one. I'm thankful for all the wonderful grandparents, other relatives, and special friends who came to Generations Day. The kids loved having them here. I heard songs and poems, I saw art projects and interviews going on. It's hard to say who had more fun- the grandparents or the kids!
I also want to say a grand merci to the PTSO and all the parents who brought food and gift cards for our Thankful Thursday. Our staff ate like kings and queens. It is nice to feel appreciated.
I am grateful to be part of such an engaged, supportive school community!

INFO SHARING
Académie Lafayette is very grateful to the Cleaver Family YMCA Togetherhood Program. The Cleaver Family YMCA and Amy Zoellner, chair of the Togetherhood YMCA volunteer program, organized a donation of over 1000 food items and canned goods for our AL students and their families! We now have an amazing food pantry at our Oak campus. Special thank you to Cleaver YMCA Executive Director, Andrea Toney, Amy Zoellner from Toegetherhood and a huge hug and thank you to YMCA staff Cathy Flowers for all their extra time, planning and encouraging of the donations. We are so fortunate to have a community partner with Cleaver YMCA!
Several of our students volunteered to and pick up the food and deliver it to our Oak campus. The students worked hard to unpack all the food and organize our new food pantry. It's wonderful to see our students show service and empathy to others!
If your family is in need of food items please contact school counselor, Lara Troutner at Oak or you can come to the Oak campus and take home what your family needs.
Happy Holidays!
