Principal's Message

Murwood Families,

Thanks to Mary Loumeau and Tricy Otten for a fabulous Welcome Back Picnic on Friday night! With the help of DJ Dave and some fun lessons, we had families up dancing the macarena, YMCA and line dancing. Special thanks to Erin Sicotte, our fearless science teacher, who provided STEM activities for the children.  PTA generously provided the glow sticks and dessert for everyone.  If you haven't joined us yet, please come to our next General Meeting on October 16, at 6:30 in the Murwood Library.  There are so many great events coming up this fall and we want you to be part of it all!

A reminder that Monday, October 8 is a non-student staff development day.  We will be continuing our work in staff safety training.

Finally, in order to have a strong home, school partnership, we need to stay connected as a community.  One of the best ways to do that is to download the WCSD mobile app on your phone. This app is most important in times of emergency, as it is a primary method of communicating information.

Other avenues of communication include:
  • MW Enews, delivered to your inbox every Wednesday
  • Teacher newsletters
  • Murwood website: https://www.walnutcreeksd.org/murwood
  • Murwood PTA website https://murwoodpta.org/
  • Murwood Twitter account Murwood@MurwoodWC
  • PTA Meetings, held at 6:30 the third Tuesday of each month contains a wealth of information regarding school events and updates

Murwood Principal
From the Office

Parents, if your student(s) will be out of town for 5 or more consecutive days (max 21 days), please come to the office two weeks prior and fill out an Independent Study Contract (ISC). Your student will be given class work by the teacher which is to be completed during the student's abscence.  The work is due the day the student reurns from the absence.  If all the work is completed, the student will receive full academic and attendance credit and the school will receive the ADA.

Please remember that there is no replacement for classroom instruction and so we ask that whenever possible, you  schedule family trips during the many school breaks that occur through out the school year.

If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Thank you!
Nancy Kaye
Murwood Office Manager

October is Creek Safety Month

In support of the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District's ongoing efforts to educate the public on creek and channel safety, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has once again declared this October as Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month.

This annual campaign is to remind us that we must become aware of the seasonal dangers around us and take the necessary steps to educate ourselves and our children to avoid them.

For more information see the attached flyer or visit www.cccounty.us/creekandchannelsafety

Mabel's Labels Fundraiser

Need a special something as a birthday present?  Keep losing your child's clothing at school? How great would this be as a stocking stuffer?  Or gift for Hannukah?  Or in a Easter Basket?  You can put it on your child's sports equipment at gymnastics, basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming, or karate and many others!
These labels are great for you AND support Murwood Elementary!  Order online at Go to  campaigns.mabelslabels.com  and choose "Murwood PTA" from the School/Organization list.

Here's a Halloween treat: 25% off + FREE shipping!

There is nothing scarier than losing all those school clothes or daycare supplies! To celebrate Halloween, we are discounting our water-proof and dishwasher safe Personalized Name Stickers in 3 spooky designs for the entire month of October. See the attached flyer for more information.
Holiday Pie Fundraiser is Coming!

We will be selling pies to help support Murwood PTA.  Come to the General PTA meeting on October 16th at 6:30 pm to taste the pies, and join us for our PTA meeting.  You can also check the PTA website and can see all the flavors and will purchase pies online. The flyers will be sent on in the Wednesday folders on October 3rd.
Box Tops for Education!

Calling all Box Tops!  Clip the Box Top from General Mills products (granola bars, cereal, many other products).  Paste them to a sheet of paper or put them in a baggie/envelope, bring them to your classroom or the PTA area of the main office.  PTA will send them in, and General Mills will send us a check.  This money helps pay for fun school events such as listening to DJ Dave at the welcome back picnic.

This year's Auction will be a Crab and Pasta Feed.  Save the date for the evening of February 23rd, 2019.  Invitations will be sent out beginning of November.

Walnut Creek Education Foundation (WCEF)
WCEF's TK-8 Math Coach & Common Core Math
Alexandra Thomas is our new district-wide TK-8 Math Coach, funded by your donations to WCEF. Thomas comes to the District with over six years of experience and has already begun to help our teachers and students think about math in new ways. Alexandra believes that in a growth mindset, a child's most basic abilities can be fostered through hard work and dedication. By looking at math as a way of merely problem solving, students may begin to see challenges as mountains of opportunities, rather than roadblocks. We are thrilled to welcome her to our District and excited to see her partner with our esteemed educators.

Register now, price is going up for the Forma Turkey Trot
This Thanksgiving, before the big meal, why not get a little exercise with a few thousand of your friends and neighbors? With kid runs, 10K and 5K options, the Forma Gym Turkey Trot is an event the entire family will enjoy. By participating you will be giving back to WCEF. Forma donated $21,500 to WCEF from proceeds last year. WCEF is honored to once again partner with Forma Gym for this wonderful tradition. Register here .

Maybe you're not a runner, but an excellent cheerleader?! We could use you (or your teenager) to volunteer leading up to the Turkey Trot and on Thanksgiving morning. Sign up and volunteer!
