A Time in History 2020:
Proud at Home

Dear Parents,

In times of uncertainty, there is one thing we can always be certain about: our brains need to process emotions. Young and old, bold and shy, we are all affected by the circling climate and need to pause and reflect in order to ground ourselves. This Park Maitland School support activity is one that is meant to help us all take time to access the thoughts bubbling inside of us.

As mentioned in my video message last week, The Proud at Home Family Scrapbook is designed to be a shared collection of self-expression.

Here is how it works: Each week every family member should pick at least one of the five prompts to answer. After choosing their question, they are to select one of the avenues on the “Choice Board” to communicate their response. The strength of this particular journal is that the family should meet together weekly ( or daily, if it becomes a favorite activity of yours) and share their reflection pieces. This allows a vehicle for discussion and connection. The pieces should then be placed inside a family journal or scrapbook. Historians all over the world agree that this time in history is unprecedented and that families should be looking for ways to document their experiences. Our Proud at Home Family Scrapbook is a perfectly comfortable and loving method to accomplish this goal.

Furthermore, since we here at Park Maitland are an extended family, we would love to see some of the responses your families create. If you feel so inclined, please share them to SeeSaw, or send them to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Please remember, this activity, school wide challenges, and enrichment experiences are optional for those families who would like to participate. We understand that each family is experiencing their own "juggling act", activities like this are merely suggestions to supplement day-to-day learning. What is most important is that you and your family find a healthy balance.

We ARE proud at home!

With great pride and gratitude,

Mrs. Moon and The Park Maitland Leadership Team

Week 3 Empathy Challenge with Mrs. "J" Jaworski, our wonderful School Counselor!

Dear Students and Parents,

YOU ROCK! Literally. I so enjoyed getting to see pictures of last week’s challenge of Encouragement stones and Kindness rocks to give out to others. It is an incredible way of lifting each other up. I am really proud of you!

As this challenge was going on, I found a stone in my own house with JOY engraved on it. The timing was absolutely perfect, as I copied that stone and painted my own JOY rock. Handing someone some JOY goes hand in hand with this challenge. And, that made me think. Isn’t that what this Empathy Challenge is all about? Spreading the JOY and lifting each other up? As we wrap up this week, and head straight into next, let’s continue to spread the joy!
Challenge Number 3: Spreading JOY in the world.  There are so many ways you can spread joy. Write a neighbor a letter. Call a friend whom you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Learn how to play a virtual game with a family member who doesn’t live with you. Make a card for a grandparent. Do an extra chore (or 2!) for your parents. Tell your siblings you love them. Make a video of you reading to your stuffed animals and send to your reading teacher. The list goes on and on, and I know YOU have more ideas than I do. I can’t wait to see what this week has in store. EnJOY!!

Just because Challenge 1 and 2 are behind us, does not mean that we have to stop doing those challenges. You can continue to make signs and cards for healthcare heroes and first responders, along with sending cards to the hospital workers. Some of you even started sewing masks! The Encouragement stones will always lift someone up, so as you spread JOY this week, don’t forget that you can include these two challenges along with it if you’d like.

I miss you all! I can’t wait to see what JOY shows up in my mailbox this week!

-Mrs. J.
