Thank You for a Great VBC
We had an out of this world Vacation Bible Camp last week where we welcomed 440 children to travel to Mars and beyond. Thank you to the 123 adults and 105 students who volunteered in many ways throughout the week! Also, thank you to the congregation for donating snacks and drinks so that our volunteers could have a time of fellowship and rest from their ministry area.

Throughout the week the children collected over 500+ cans for our food pantry and raised $3032.50 that will go to Wesley Camp in the Republic of Latvia (located in the Baltic region of northern Europe). This camp was founded and built by the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church in 2004 with the purpose to spread the gospel to people of all ages. The money we raised will help transport children to camp, provide scholarships to campers, and help to build cabins. Then, we got an example of God doing far beyond all of this is when we found out that someone had decided to match what the children had raised. After that generous donation, we are able to send $6,065 to Wesley Camp!

Thank you to everyone who contributed with your time, money, and resources. Your help allows us the freedom to make our children feel welcomed, feel loved, and to remind them that they are not only our future, but they are called to be an important part of ministry now!

Fidget Mat Ministry's Next Steps
Just over a year ago, our Fidget Ministry was started to create mats that would help those with Dementia, PTSD, or Macular Degeneration. The mats have items that allow the recipient to twist, pull, zip, open, and button with various materials of different textures, colors, designs, etc. Their initial start-up goal was to make a mat for each of the 30 VHUMC members with such conditions. They quickly achieved that goal and have now created and distributed over 750 mats to people in Retirement Homes, Respite Programs, the V.A., Ombudsmen for six nearby counties, barbers, beauticians, and numerous individuals.

Now, they are taking the next step by creating mats for a person using items from that person's past. This has the added possibility of also helping the recipient to remember some of their sweet memories. Each of the items on this mat represent key items in the recipient's past. If you have a relative or friend who fidgets, please consider items that might make a personal connection. Bring those items in a bag or box to the VHUMC office with the recipient's name, your contact information, and a note about the recipient. We will put a mat together and get back with you. Each Fidget Mat is made with love by the women of Vestavia Methodist!
Help Us Finish Strong
As a congregation, you have helped us make a tremendous recovery in your financial giving this fiscal year. We had several below-budget months last fall and were $276,312 below our income budget at the end of January. We sounded the alarm and you have responded very well and very generously. We are happy to report that at the end of May, we are only $16,780 below our income budget! Thank you.

Our fiscal year ends on June 30 and summer tends to be a time when donations drop. If you can, please help us finish this year strong. We may even meet our giving budget for the year. Your giving keeps our worship services, facilities, programs, and mission efforts going.
I Love America Night
VHUMC is honored once again to sponsor the kid's area of I Love American Night next Thursday, June 27, 6:00-10:00 pm. This year, since Wald Park is under construction, the event will be held at Vestavia Hills High School. There will be inflatables, corn hole, and popcorn during the movie (which plays at dusk). So please join Vestavia Methodist, the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation, and the entire community for this wonderful night. Thank you again for the excellent opportunity to be Christ's hands and feet into our community as we invite people into our church family.
Reunited and It Feels So Good
Last summer the construction gave us the opportunity to combine some Sunday services. We had such good feedback that this year we have decided to worship together once again. Throughout the month of July the 8:30 and 11:00 traditional services will be reuniting with the services in Tyson Hall. The 9:45 service will still remain in the Sanctuary. To kick off this move we will be hosting our annual Independence Day concert on July 7 as we bring back Three On A String to perform in the 8:30 and 11:00 am services.

Here is the breakdown of how each week's worship style:
  • July 7 - Three on a String
  • July 14 - Traditional
  • July 21 - Contemporary
  • July 28 - Blended
On August 4, everything should be back to the original worship spaces, with the Discovery Weekend service in the Sanctuary at 9:45 am. So, join everybody for worship during the rest of summer!
Three On A String Sunday
The popular Birmingham-based ensemble Three on a String is celebrating their 48th anniversary with lively back to back performances here at Vestavia Methodist. Each service will feature the delightful mix of folk, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, and country music with a generous helping of humor for which the group is so well known.

Join us in worship on Sunday, July 7, as Three On A String leads us at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services in our brand-new Tyson Hall. You won't want to miss this exciting Sunday in the life of our church.
Joint Sunday School Lesson
Please join us on Sunday, July 7, at 9:45 am in the Fellowship Hall for a joint Sunday School lesson from Gideons International. Come listen as they share inspirational stories of their work in the U.S. and abroad to make the Word of God available to everyone and work with the local church to reach souls for Christ.
Boomers and Beyond Sock Hop
Find your poodle skirt or some Brylcreem and come have a great evening of dancing, food, and movie clips as we go back in time to the fabulous 1950's. The Sock Hop will be July 18, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, in the Fellowship Hall. The cost is $10/person, which will include your meal of hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, and make your own sundae bar. You can invite your friends and we won't be checking IDs at the door. Everyone will need to make a reservation by July 8. For more information contact Jim Frazier ([email protected] / 769-0126).
Mission Minutes
Many of our members are still amazed when they discover all the mission efforts and organizations that we sponsor or support. Look for our new "Mission Minutes" in the Notes over the next year where we will highlight a mission partner/project every couple of weeks. Maybe you will even find a new way to get plugged in at VHUMC. During this "minute" we will also mention any needs that our partners might have that Sunday School classes or individuals could help with as they feel called.

This is great way to learn more about what VHUMC is doing to continue being the hands and feet of Christ and where God is calling us to continue to serve both locally and around the world.
Welcome New Members
Please join us in welcoming new members Alex and Alexander Johnson into our VHUMC family. They have been attending for a while and just determined to make this their church home. They are both Medical Technologists in town and are already members of the Shepherds' Sunday School Class. They are expecting their first precious bundle of joy this December. Please let's give them a warm VHUMC welcome.

You can see pictures of our new members on the bulletin board outside the church office and on the TV monitors outside of Tyson and across the church.
VHUMC Marriage Night
Join thousands of couples in churches around the country on Friday, August 16, for a one-night marriage enrichment experience. Come enjoy a night to laugh and learn with your spouse/significant other as you hear from marriage experts and discover how to honor God in your marriage. The cost is $20 per couple and includes dinner. Childcare is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact Suzanne Scott-Trammell with any questions ([email protected] or 250-769-0136).

Ongoing Outreach
Food Pantry
A huge thanks to the children for all of the canned goods and food collected last week during Vacation Bible Camp. Thanks also for the fresh produce you are bringing to us. Our families rarely get fresh items and this is a real treat. Thank you!

Oak Mountain Mission
Oak Mountain Mission needs furniture, especially tables and chairs. Please call Roddy (685-5757) to arrange for a pick-up. They are always in need of cookware, dishes and linens. These may be put into the three bins around the church. Thank you.
