GW Cardiologists and Fellows Present
New Discoveries in Cardiac Medicine
Mid-Atlantic Capital Cardiology Symposium

GW cardiology fellows and faculty demonstrated their academic leadership in the Mid-Atlantic region (DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware) through original research and as invited speakers and session moderators at the Mid-Atlantic Capital Cardiology Symposium hosted by the American College of Cardiology at the ACC's Heart House November 2018.  GW highlights include:   
  • Dr. Talal Alzahrani, GW Cardiology fellow, was a finalist for the Capital Young Investigator Award for his study "Heart Rate in Patients with Heart Failure and Preserved Ejection Fraction."  Cardiology faculty mentors included Drs. Allen Solomon and Gurusher Panjrath.

  • Eleven research abstracts, the most of any program in the Mid-Atlantic, were presented by each of the GW Cardiology Fellows with mentorship by the GW Cardiology Faculty.

GW Cardiology Fellows
  • Dr. Andrew Choi, Co-Director of Cardiac CT and MRI, delivered an invited lecture on academic cardiology for fellows-in-training, and moderated a session on "US vs UK Approach to Chest Pain" that included Prof. Simon Ray, current President of the British Cardiovascular Society. Dr. Choi also served as the overall session moderator for the fellows-in-training Non-Clinical Competencies Session and served as an abstract judge for the meeting.

GW Cardiology Fellow Dr. Bayo Atanda

GW cardiology faculty and fellows participated in the 2018 American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in Chicago, IL. This international meeting attracts nearly 20,000 attendees to exchange new information about advances in heart disease.
  • Dr. William Borden moderated a session entitled "U.S. Health Policy at the Crossroads: What Cardiovascular Clinicians Need to Know."
  • Dr. Lisa W. Martin was a co-investigator for two major studies presented: "CIRT Trial -Methotrexate to Reduce Cardiovascular Events," and "REDUCE-IT trial EPA Omega-3 Supplementation to Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in High Risk Patients with Elevated Triglycerides." These studies were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
  • Dr. Steven Farmer presented "At the Crossroads - Key Policy Changes Affecting Cardiovascular Providers."
  • Dr. Bayo Atanda, GW Cardiology fellow, presented abstract, "Exposure to Heavy Metals Increases Cardiovascular Risk by Elevation of Serum Lipid Levels- a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Based Study," originally published in Circulation.
Faculty Presentations and Publications


 Dr. Andrew Choi

Dr. Andrew Choi published "Building Bridges in Cardiology and Radiology: Why Collaboration is the Future of Cardiovascular Imaging" in both the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) and JACC: CV Imaging.
Dr. Marco Mercader lectured at the Rotary Club in Arlington, Virginia about the GW Cardiology Honduras Medical Mission. 
Dr. Bill Borden presented "Alternative Payment Models" at the American College of Cardiology's Legislative Conference in October and served on a panel discussion for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Clinical Scholars.
Dr. Gurusher Panjrath, Dr. Allen Solomon, and GW Cardiology Fellow Dr. Talal Alzahrani published "The Effect of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors on Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Ischemic Cardiomyopathy and Midrange Ejection Fraction: a Post Hoc Subgroup Analysis from the PEACE Trial," in Therapeutic Advances in Cardiovascular Disease.

  • Learning and Action Network Summit 10/18: "Alternative Payment Model Adoption in Each Market Segment"
  • American College of Cardiology "Right Metrics, Right Outcomes for Heart Failure Patients: The CMS Meaningful Measures Initiative"

Dr. Gurusher Panjrath was an invited speaker at several conferences and coauthor on multiple manuscripts:

  • Round table participant at the ACC Forum on the Right Measures for the Right Care of Heart Failure Patients.
  • Presented "Iron Deficiency in Heart Failure" at the Cardiometabolic Health Conference in Boston, MA.
  • Presented "Inotropes and Vasodilators in Acute Heart Failure," and "Evaluation of Management of Cardiogenic Shock," at the InterAmerican Congress of Heart Failure in Panama.
  • Presented "Guidelines to Clinical Practice in Heart Failure" at the International Congress of Heart Failure in China.
  • Published "Prediction of Readmissions and Mortality in Patients with Heart Failure: Lessons from the IMPEDANCE-HF Extended Trial," in ESC Heart Fail 2018
  • Published "Lifestyle Modifications as Potential Approaches for Prevention and Treatment of Heart Failure," in the Journal of American College of Cardiology.
