2019 NENSA Club of the Year Award:
Frost Mountain Nordic
|
NENSA is pleased and excited to award the 2018-2019 Club of the Year Award to Frost Mountain Nordic! The club did an amazing job this year hosting both an Eastern Cup and the New England Bill Koch League Festival. Both events were well organized, inclusive, fun, and celebrated the spirit of Nordic skiing and the joy of going fast on skis!
Frost Mountain Nordic always strives to put on the best possible events – the combination of exciting trails, hardlined snowmaking, the Rikert staff and volunteer force always make for memorable days up on the mountain. Perhaps the most striking attribute is the knowledge that they bring to the table as an organizing committee – folks genuinely like gathering at the Breadloaf Campus to act as one large skiing family!

2019 NENSA Coach of the Year Award:
Patrick Weaver from UVM
|
For those of you who follow collegiate skiing you will not be surprised to hear that the University of Vermont’s Patrick Weaver is the 2019 NENSA Coach of the Year. The ever humble Weaver had to get used to winning this winter — to be exact his skiers won 15 of 20 individual EISA races, and topped the team scores of 16 of the 24 EISA cross country team events including winning both of the season’s relays. The Catamounts continued to mount a hardy fight at NCAA’s, finishing third in Nordic competition, en route to a overall second place team finish at the 2019 Championships – and oh yeah, they hosted the event too. UVM skiers received many end-of-season accolades, including Lina Sutro being named EISA Skate Skier of the Year and Bill Harmeyer earning the title of both the Classic and Skate Skier of the Year. Freshman standout and EISA Rookie of the Year, Ben Ogden, was also a member of the historic 2019 FIS Junior World Ski Championship gold medal relay team. All of this success under Weaver’s leadership equated to earning the honors of both EISA and NCAA Coach of the Year for 2019.

SafeSport Program
NENSA has always urged ALL New England coaches, parent volunteers, venue volunteers and anyone working with youth to take the SafeSport on-line course and get certified. NENSA has been requiring this of all our staff and volunteer coaches and wax techs at JN's and REG Camps for several years now. Please take time this season to be sure all your club volunteers and coaches are SafeSport certified. Do it today. Go to:

Laughter, Culture, Fitness, Fatigue Come Together
at Bend Camp
|
Fitness, technique, and speed are key attributes to becoming a world-class cross country skier. But culture, laughter, and fun are what make a great team! Fortunately, all those attributes came together May 18-31, as the U.S. Cross Country Team hosted its first on-snow camp of the season in Bend, Ore., at the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center.

U.S. Cross Country Women’s Coaching Fellowship
Male cross country ski coaches outnumber female coaches by a 2:1 ratio in the United States. When observing head coach and other leadership positions, this ratio becomes even more exaggerated. To help address this disparity, the U.S. Cross Country Team is creating a fellowship to provide female coaches an opportunity to share experiences alongside U.S. Ski Team coaches and athletes.
Who: Four female cross country coaches, accepted through the below application process.
What: A one-week coaching fellowship to take place at the October U.S. Cross Country Team training camp. Accepted applicants will work alongside U.S. Ski Team coaches to assist and learn from athletes in a camp setting. All expenses will be covered thanks to the generosity of the HerRay! Foundation.
Where: The October U.S. Cross Country camp will be split into two locations, Lake Placid, NY and Park City, UT. Two fellowship applicants will be selected to attend the Lake Placid camp and two fellowship applicants will be selected to attend the Park City camp.
When: October 7-13, 2019 (for both locations)
How: Please submit:
- Your résumé
- One area you believe U.S. Cross Country Skiing could improve, and how that issue should be addressed (1 page maximum).

From Capitol Region Nordic Alliance Club ~
Looking for and calling on all Clubs that offer
Adaptive/Paralympic Winter Sports
Individual organizations often join together to form a greater singular entity that creates a greater impact on not only those it serves but to achieve greater capacity to serve more. Organizations like NENSA achieve that in addition to many other goals established by its BoD and Executive Director. Capitol Region Nordic Alliance is looking to gather information and resources from the individual clubs all around New England now offering paranordic and adaptive programming within their capabilities.
Conversations between various clubs and athletes are focusing on reviving the network consortium of paranordic/paralympic clubs to do such wonderful collaborative programming initiatives as:
- Share equipment (sitskis, nordic rental equipment, biathlon, snowshoes, timing equipment, etc)
- Develop and share staff for clinics, camps, regional/national events etc.
- Implement a series of training/competition events supporting both NENSA Adaptive as well as US Paranordic
- Develop and implement a strategy to have financially healthy and growing adaptive programs and venues throughout New England
- Work with NENSA, CXC, US Paranordic, WPNS and above all to offer those with disabilities/special needs the same opportunities to be joyful on snow
