One Person Makes A Difference

It's been nearly 7 years ago, but seems like yesterday. Steve Jobs died. Whether you're an Apple guy or not, you have to agree that he added some significant things to our society. iPhones, iPad, iMac. Apple was doing windows before Microsoft got the idea. Which of you doesn't have a computer mouse? Amazing changes because of one life.

Follow Your Heart
Steve dropped out of college. He followed his heart. He made great things happen. One of my favorite quotes from him:

"Almost everything--all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure--these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

People who follow their passion, follow their heart, make a difference. Most of us won't be "world changing" people, like Steve Jobs. But you'll make a big changes in your life and the life of the people around you if YOU follow your heart.

Big Goals. Big Differences.

We run. We set big goals--like marathons, triathlons, and lots of other crazy adventures.

Running is a way we keep ourselves in shape to follow our hearts. It's also the way WE make big changes in the world. Most of the world won't notice. But the people around us will. For those people, YOU ARE THE ONE PERSON WHO MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

RELAY!!
Most people don't realize that we also have a relay! It's 5 legs, and if you like, a person can run two consecutive legs, so teams of 3-5 are just fine. Pepsi is the title sponsor of our relay (Thank you!) If you or some of your friends aren't ready for 13.1 or 26.2, put together a relay team. If your company has a wellness program--maybe you could forward this to the coordinator and encourage them to put a team in.

Running Is Fun and Healthy for Kids!
Do you want to introduce your children to running through fun and age-appropriate family events? GRM has a Kids Marathon for your 2-12 year-olds! This two-month-long event begins with a mile at Millennium Park on August 5, 2019 and ends with 1.2 miles on Saturday, October 19, the day before the Grand Rapids Marathon. Exercising in the Heat
Ed Kornoelje DO
Metro Health—University of Michigan Health Sports Medicine

I don’t want to jinx us, but it looks like we may be starting to see things heat up!  Here are a few things to keep in mind while exercising in warmer weather:

1.   Slow down.   Running generates heat.  The higher the temperature, the harder it is for the body to cool down.  One estimate suggests that every five-degree rise in temperature above 60°F can slow pace 20-30 seconds per mile, and in marathoners the pace can slow about three percent for every 10 degree rise above 50°F.

2.   Cool down.   Run for 1-2 miles (or up to 15 minutes), hose off or jump in a pool for a few minutes—then do it again.  Or intersperse walking and running—the higher the temperature, the more walking.

3.  Run in the AM or PM.   If possible run at the cooler times of day—early morning (preferable) or in the evening.

4.  Dress right.   Light colored, tech fabrics keep you cooler by not absorbing as much heat and helping wick away sweat.  A visor will shade your face while letting more heat escape (guys—watch the dome!).

Also, don’t forget sunscreen.  Even on cloudy days UVA and UVB rays will get through.  Use SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours.

The sports medicine physicians at Metro Health Sports Medicine are experts on these issues and many more.  We have offices in Allendale, Caledonia, Cascade, Cedar Springs, Rockford and Wyoming, and you can find out more at  www.metrohealth.net , or by calling 252-7778.  As team physicians for the Griffins, Drive, Grand Valley State University, Aquinas College and Calvin College (among others) as well as events such as the Reeds Lake Runs, the Michigan Titanium Triathlon and the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon, we have the experience and expertise to work with athletes of all ages.  We will also be present at many event expos and training runs, as well as our weekly Injury Wise clinic at Gazelle Sports in Grand Rapids every Wednesday night from 6-7:30 PM.  These are brief first-come encounters for active individuals of all ages and sports—contact Gazelle for more information.

Be active!

Related by Blood. Related by Sweat

A little personal on this one--Sunday, Betsy and I had a party to celebrate our getting married back on the first day of spring. There were lots of family members there, of course. We were also blessed with many friends, old and new. Of course, many of my friends come from my running family. For a quarter of a century I've been a runner.

Many people I'm related to by blood. Many more I'm related to by sweat. Whether it's blood or sweat, there was lots of love there. Lots of family of all kinds.

See you at the FINISH LINE!

and the adventure continues....
