A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
At one point in this week's Torah portion, Be-Ha'Alotekha, after the Israelites complain for the umpteenth time, Moses laments to God:
I cannot carry all this people by myself, for it is too much for me. If you would deal thus with me, kill me rather, I beg You, and let me see no more of my wretchedness!
God could have done many things in response. God could have given Moses more strength. God could have given Moses the ability to perform more miracles. God could have caused the Israelites to stop complaining.
But God does not do any of the above. Instead, God tells Moses to bring 70 elders and...."They shall share the burden of the people with you, and you shall not bear it alone".
This is not the first time that God has to solve a loneliness problem. In the beginning of the Torah, God says "it is not good for man to be alone". The end result is that woman is created and man had a partner. Here, in the fourth book of the Torah, God, again, recognizes that it is not good for a man to be alone and spreads one man's burdens among seventy people.
There is an important lesson to be gleaned from this Text. In most places when there is civil unrest, the natural human tendency is for the person in charge to consolidate his/her control. The autocrat gives himself more authority to make unilateral decisions and, in so doing, takes complete control of a situation. The historical result of this consolidation of power usually ends up with people being beaten, subjugated, and killed.
God's model is to do just the opposite. God spreads the authority around and forces people to work together. It is a recipe for consensus building.
What a moment in history it is. Moses, as a leader, could have yelled and screamed and enforced harsh rules. Instead he is forced to recognize his "weakness" and willingly accepts a decrease in his control. Instead, the answer is to call in other great minds to handle the immediate crisis and future crises.
It is a wonderful lesson. Human power rests not in one person, or one group. Instead, it is spread amongst the many.
A Torah of truth, A Torah or Holiness, A Torah of democracy.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS....
|
We sadly said farewell to JCC friend and staff member, Marcie Deutsch, at a luncheon in the Social Hall on Wednesday. Marcie is moving to Myrtle Beach SC and wish her the best.
The Book Club met last week and enjoyed a fruitful discussion ably led by Debbie Schweighardt of the book "The Women of the Castle".
The next review will be held on Monday, July 15 at 10:30 am.
Sue Rubinfeld will lead our group in the JCC Library as we discuss Inheritance by Dani Shapiro.
Inheritance is a book about secrets--secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman's urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history. It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in--a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover.
