THE LARKIN GALLERY - BEHIND THE GLASS
THE CHAUTAUQUA BICYCLE  AND  MORE
FROM THE PIERCE ARROW MUSEUM

Jim and Mary Ann Sandoro have been collecting vintage bicycles for nearly 50 years. In 2017, they revealed their collection at the Pierce Arrow Museum on Seneca and Michigan Streets.

Amongst the plethora of products the Larkin Company offered as premiums, was the Chautauqua Bicycle.

The two wheeler shares the name with another popular premium, the Chautauqua Desk. Possibly a decision made by Larkin Co. executive, Elbert Hubbard, who is said to have drawn Roycroft inspiration from the Chautauqua Institution.

Another treasure found at the museum is the Frank Lloyd Wright Filling Station. The 1927 designed gas station is even futuristic by todays standards. The structure never came to fruition until  2002, planning began to construct the filling station as a one-of-a-kind installation to complement automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles on display at the existing museum. Jim Sandoro and architect, Patrick Mahoney, traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona to the Frank Lloyd Wright archives to locate drawings related to the Buffalo design.

Thank you to our latest donors to the Larkin Gallery; Steven Davis, Linda Ulrich-Hagner, Jonica DiMartino, Betty Mitchell, Alexander Esty Stocker, Harold Christie, John Larkin, Tom Tempeny and Fran Goddu.

You now have the opportuntity to solidify your name in Larkin history. For a  modest donation, we are offering a brick on the Phantom Pier emblazoned with your name or message. Click below for more information.

LARKIN HISTORY FROM THE DESK OF SHARON OSGOOD | CHRISTMAS TIME AT LARKIN

It is Christmastime at Larkin and the publishing department is in high gear. It is early in the 1900's; spirits are very gay. The Larkin Family - owners, employees, Larkin Secretaries and customers - love this time of year. Larkin Company publications add to the excitement of holiday festivities.

Stoking the flames is a publication entitled "The Larkin Idea."   This monthly magazine, initiated in 1901, was designed primarily for Larkin Secretaries.
These are the women throughout the country who hosted clubs in their homes that met monthly (usually ten members each) to review the most recent Larkin semi-annual catalog from which they selected products from the approximately 900 manufactured by Larkin Soap Company, i.e. LSC. The combined Order resulted in the purchase of a large volume of products, leading to the reward of greater numbers of certificates which could then be exchanged for all kinds of household items. Each month one of the club members would receive that month's certificates, thus enabling one person to have enough to trade in for "more expensive" items such as china, furniture or appliances.

The object of this manner of marketing was to eliminate all the middlemen so that products could be purchased more inexpensively than they would cost from a retail store or other sales agent. It led to the motto, "The Larkin Idea: Save all Cost which adds no Value."

The magazine, published monthly, kept the Secretaries informed of new products and current events at the company, as well as recognized exemplary Secretaries and sharing their ideas for better sales and activities. It was also a device to suggest ways for Secretaries to solicit even more Secretaries.   Continue Reading
