Family Formation Patterns of Recent Young Adults
Cohabitation, marriage, and parenthood are considered markers of adulthood as they can signify the formation of a family. The newest three-part Family Profile series uses the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 to explore these family formation experiences for young adults born between 1980 and 1984. By the age of 30, 62% of this cohort had cohabited, half had experienced a birth, and 45% had married. Young Adulthood: Cohabitation, Birth, and Marriage Experiences (FP-18-22) begins by reporting how these family formation experiences differ across demographic characteristics. Young Adulthood: Number & Type of Family Formation Events (FP-18-23) then examines the number and types of family formation events young adults experienced by age 30. Finally, Young Adulthood: Sequencing of Union Experiences Relative to First Birth (FP-18-24) considers the coresidential union experiences of young adults when they became parents.
