YOUR CLC COMMUNITY
The holidays are a natural time to think about the meaning of community. As you renew your CLC membership, remember that belonging to a community is one of the not-so-hidden benefits of being a CLC member.
Last month I talked about outreach and how much time CLC staff have spent out in the library community talking to our members. It is always a privilege to be able to see what is happening in your libraries, and we hope you are able to benefit from the "bringing together" that CLC accomplishes through roundtables and other professional gatherings. When you are the only person in your role at your library, or when you need some fresh ideas or innovative solutions, your library community is there for you.
Another CLC initiative has been to promote the value of libraries and CLC members to a wider community by exhibiting at conferences. Since we can't be everywhere, of course we choose conferences of key importance to our members and our profession, such as CLA and CASL. But we also try to be a presence at events that we think will provide strategic benefit for libraries. Last year we began exhibiting at CAPSS CABE, for school superintendents and boards of education. This year, we joined with Connecticut's three principal library networks to exhibit at the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities convention. We made important connections outside our immediate library community, helping stakeholders understand how libraries have been resource sharing for over 40 years. Learn more about our adventures at both of these events below.
In this season of thanks, we at CLC are grateful for the opportunity to work in Connecticut "library land" - a magical place where everyone is working as hard as they can to make a difference in the community of individuals they serve. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the magic.

Alena Principato
Member Relations Manager, Public & Special Libraries
|
|
In early November, we mailed membership renewal packets to all the primary contacts at our member libraries. The packet included a flyer celebrating the
Faces of CLC
, and we think the message is so important that we want to share it with everyone.
At the 2018 CLA Conference, our exhibit theme was "Build a Better Librarian." We had lots of fun with our LEGO minifigures (see all of the LEGO creations
here
) but the goal was to show that while products and savings are nice,
CLC is all about YOU, your library, and your needs
.
We want to remind you that if your library is a CLC member, you are a member too. That means you can access our discounts, attend our roundtables and events, and let us know how CLC can help you. CLC is your organization. Thank you for being a part of our community!

CLC AT CABE CAPSS
In our continuous effort to listen and talk to all library stakeholders, CLC exhibited at the
CABE CAPSS Convention
at the Mystic Marriott on November 16th.

Attracting public school superintendents and boards of education from across Connecticut, this conference was an excellent opportunity to inform BOE members and district level administrators about the many benefits of CLC membership, and to highlight the importance of school libraries.

CLC IS FOR EVERYONE
One of the things that surprised attendees was that all staff members of a CLC school, including English, reading, and technology teachers, can take advantage of the savings and negotiated products and services CLC offers. I mention this because in some schools our point of contact is not the school librarian. Be sure to spread the word to your colleagues!

TRY A SAVINGS AUDIT!
Something that the CABE CAPSS attendees had in common with CECA CASL attendees from October was an expressed interest in savings audits, which are available for members and non-members. When you request a savings audit, CLC will examine your budget line items for books, non-print media, e-resources, supplies, equipment, and technology to determine if CLC could save you money. Interested? Schools and academic libraries, please contact me for more information. Public and special libraries, contact Alena Principato.

CONSORTIA BAND TOGETHER
FOR STATEWIDE ADVOCACY EFFORT
|
|
BY JENNIFER KEOHANE
CLC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Over 420 municipal officials from 144 towns and cities attended the conference, and we were able to speak and talk about our services to many of them. There was lots of recognition of how wonderful their libraries are, but also surprise about the savings and collaborative programs. This is the first step in creating stronger advocacy and support for our members at the municipal level. If you are interested in having us set up a meeting and prepare a presentation about your library’s value and efficiencies via consortia, please contact Jennifer Keohane at
jkeohane@ctlibrarians.org.
