Job Ondimu and Abdulhafiz Issa
This week, 7th graders Job Ondimu and Abdulhafiz Issa were recognized for their academic achievement and efforts by their language teachers, Caitlin Persky and Mayumi Huynh (not pictured), at a meeting with the principal, Les Bork. In their classes, they are demonstrating the IB Learner Profile traits of being knowledgeable, communicators and risk-takers.
Boys2Men Group
The St Louis Park School District’s Strategic Plan is focused on equitable educational outcomes for all students, with a mission to ensure each student feels welcome and included in our community. Because of this, we are offering a leadership group for our black boys called Boys2Men. The purpose of this group is to create a safe space to talk about race, build positive relationships and create a deeper sense of self-identity.

De’Ante Michaud and Darrell Young will facilitate these groups. Groups for 6th & 7th grade will be held every Thursday for 30 minutes in place of their Discovery class. The eighth grade group will meet on Tuesdays during the school day on a rotating period basis. Mr. Michaud and Mr. Young will lead group discussions defining and developing positive self-identity. Group sessions will include community building activities, time for self-reflection, possible guest speakers and other activities that create a safe, supportive space to explore self-identity and race.

If you would like your student to participate in the Boys2Men group, please sign and return a permission form to the Middle School Student Services office. Permission forms can be picked up in the Middle School Student Services Office or click here for a form . There is limited space in each group. Groups will start December 11 and 13.

Cop Corner
Reminder, please do not drop off students on the West side of Texas in the morning. When students are dropped off on the West side they then have to walk across traffic. This makes for dangerous conditions as many drivers are solely focused on the challenging vehicle traffic and not pedestrians.

Thank you!

Bus Reminders
Transportation to and from school by bus is provided for students based on the distance they live from the school. Drivers have been charged with the responsibility of operating the bus according to safety rules. Students are urged to cooperate with this effort to furnish transportation that is both safe and efficient. The bus ride to and from school is a part of the school day, and school expectations and rules apply.

Reminders:
All school rules apply to the bus ride.
Bus riding is a privilege not a right.
Safety is important on our busses.
Respect the driver.

All-School Book Read Update: 11-30-18
All-School Book Club update:
Today was the first day that we hosted conversations on the first short story in the all-school book read,  Flying Lessons and Other Stories . Students and staff came to the LMC over their lunch break and talked about the story...their favorite parts...thoughts on the characters..and made connections to their own lives. It was inspiring to hear the conversations. Thank you to Peter Gerdts, Middle School equity coach and Catherine Tacha Rojas, global intern, for facilitating the conversations. Special guest was Silvia Reguero Carrera, one of the Middle School global interns, who took time to read an excerpt of the story in Spanish as the story was about a Latino 13 year old boy. We all ate, talked, and laughed together.

Next short story from the book that we'll discuss is "Choctaw Bigfoot, Midnight in the Mountains". This starts on page 105 in the book and is a story about a Native American Middle Schooler.  December 14th  is when we'll host lunches to discuss this story.

Here's the link for those who need a book:  Google form - Need a Book?  (kids can also access this link through Schoology and on the LMC website).

Contribute To This Year's Yearbook
St. Louis Park Middle School has new advisers for the 2018-19 yearbook.  We, Maria Johnson and Lisa Becker, are excited about the opportunity to help gather memories for your students, but we would love to have your help!
The best yearbooks are filled with many photos of a variety of events and students; learning, performing, competing and having fun. We have an easy way for you to share photos of our Middle Schools students in their co-curricular activities, so that we have many to choose from.
Our yearbook company, Josten’s, has created RePlayIt, a free app to share photos with us. You can find it in the App Store or in Google Play Store to download to your mobile phone. We gave it a try and it works great!  All we did was download the app, registered with St. Louis Park Middle School and took some photos to share. Thank you for helping capturing the moments of our students’ year!
Site Council
Thanks to all parents who came to the evening Site Council Meeting on November 14.
Mark Your Calendars: The next Site Council Meeting is January 9, 2019 at 3:45 p.m. in the Media Center.
