ANNUAL CONFERENCE SESSION REPORT
|
The one-year-birthday gathering of the Mountain Sky Conference took place at the Montana
Convention Center in Billings, Montana, June 13 - 16. Pastor Deb Olenyik and Jeanne Ambrosier attended as voting members. The theme of this year's conference was "Love, Heal, Thrive: Rebuilding a Worthy Temple."
A major part of Annual Conference were times to worship God and celebrate the connection across our four state region. We opened Annual Conference with a time of anointing and healing for the current state of our denomination. We heard outstanding, inspiring preaching by J.J. Warren of New York and Bishop Gregory Palmer of West Ohio, as well as our own Bishop Karen Oliveto, Rev. Yvette Kristie, Rev. Ryan Canaday and Rev. Calvin Hill. Among these services, we remembered our baptisms, received the sacrament of communion, honored those clergy who had passed and ordained several new elders and deacons.
On Friday morning all conference attendees immersed themselves in a time of service,
education and advocacy in the Billings area focusing on our missional theme of "Addiction, Health and Justice." The "

held at the Mission Dinner and Celebration raised $8,500 to support the development of suicide prevention resources for local congregations and Angola pastors. Other offerings throughout the conference raised an additional $13,500 for various projects within our region and beyond.
In addition to many standard agenda items, {such as pastors' minimum compensation, camp matters and the conference budget}, this year we elected delegates to the
2020 General Conference {May 2020} and the Western Jurisdiction Conference
{July 2020}. These are held every four years. We were able to celebrate, unlike many Annual Conferences, that we have no unfunded clergy liability relating to benefits for our retired clergy.
A
mong the petitions passed were two on the consent calendar, with over 95% approval, which related to responses to actions of the Special General Conference held in February 2019. One petition called for the Mountain Sky Conference not to impose the punitive measures passed by the Special General Conference, affirmed the Mountain Sky Conference's continued path of including all without gender identification exceptions, and addressed the concern of the vulnerability of some of our colleagues. It also affirmed that churches in this region have wide theological and social issue contexts, and they would not be required to accept pastors who did not align with the values of their context or require churches to perform same-sex marriages -with the emphasis for all churches and clergy to be engaged in effective ministry and discipleship. The other petition in this area directed the conference leadership team {a group of 23 clergy and lay persons from the conference boards, staff and ministry teams} to form a special team to develop options for moving forward, including listening sessions throughout the conference and at least quarterly communications to the conference on their progress.
A late petition was brought forward and approved by an 80% vote calling on the Western Jurisdiction College of Bishops to convene a special Western Jurisdiction Conference prior to the 2020 General Conference with the purpose of developing a process for the entire region moving forward.

CHURCH AT THE RANCH

This has been a wonderful experience in the past, and much appreciation to Glenn and Pat for their hospitality! There will be hot dogs, brats, pulled pork and homemade ice cream. Please bring outdoor chairs for you and your family and a side dish to share. Dress is casual, and cowboy wear is encouraged. Although there will be plenty of parking, if you wish to car pool, meet at the church at by 9:45; the van will also be available for departure at 9:45.
Pastor Deb will preach, there will be special music with a band, a poetry reading, cowboy prayers, pony rides, and group singing. Come one come all, bring friends, and see Pikes Peak from their beautiful property!
DIRECTIONS: exit Richmond Hill Road off 285 south, cross over 285 and look for Wamblee Valley road to the right. The Stoll's home is about 2 miles on the left.

ECHO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM
|
|
|
UMCE has been given the privilege again this year to prepare meals for the EChO clients and volunteers the last week in June, July and August. Our first time will be Monday, June 24 and the following dates will be July 22 & 24 and August 26 & 29.
Last year we prepared food for approximately 400 people during the summer months, and received very sincere appreciation from EChO. The ECho lunch program was started in 2010, and since then five area churches have been taking part in this program from September through May. Last year was the first time the lunch program was continued during the summer months. For some people, this is the only meal they might receive that day.
If you would like to donate the needed groceries for this cause, please mark your contribution for the EChO Summer Lunch Program. If you have any questions, please contact Ruthanne Huber at 303-870-7322.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY FESTIVAL & CAR SHOW

We have some strong competition on our fundraiser day, but we're hoping and are confident we can count on volunteers to help us out.
We still need auction items, gift baskets, unique items that you would want to offer, or gift certificates from where you shop, handmade items etc., a volunteer that will be at the auction table!
Here's some things we would like to borrow for the day. Please let us know if you might have these to loan.
Ez up tents/canopy/shade
Folding tables (long preferred)
Christmas decorations (tinsel, etc. to decorate tables)
Wire or wood stakes to put cardboard signs on
Cash box, plastic bags
- Help is needed to direct traffic flow & parking & someone to sit at the Car Show registration table & to hand out gift bags.
- Someone (or 2) to place signs at different areas in town approximately 10 days ahead of the event.
- A couple of volunteers to work at the church's "used items table" along with any youth that might be helping. Bring items clean, priced and ready to sell.
- Good Samaritans to check with vendors that might need help or stay in booth while vendors take restroom breaks.
- And of course help to set up and take down a few tables/chairs. All events end at 4:00 pm. All vendors will take care of their own booths.
Please bring your bakery items for the bake sale.
Reminder:
If you are in our church family & want to be a vendor, cost is $25 and you keep what you make, but please contact Orpha or Marcia for registration form.

We had folk ages 3 and up helping out. You were great! While much has been completed,
we still have unfinished projects
- such as "weed-wacking" sections and completing the rail painting by the upper parking lot. If you could come by for

EVERGREEN SHELTER PROGRAM

Thank you for our biggest and most successful season yet!
With your help, in the 2018-19 season
We provided 411 shelter stays between 13 adults and one child.
We were open a whopping 117 nights!
To put this into perspective, we provided:
36 shelter stays
and were open 29 nights in the 2017-2018 season.
108 shelter stays
and were open 46 nights in the 2016-2017 season.

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

I wasn't very pleased with my attitude when I woke up Monday morning. I thought a possible solution might be to sneak upstairs to my devotional book and my Bible before anyone else knew I was awake. Sure enough, it helped. The first sentence in my Upper Room Disciplines read "The fact that we trust in God does not guarantee that life be easy." It was good to see that my plight was understood. Second sentence: "Believers suffer discouragement as well."
After reading that selection, I turned to a marker in another book. The place marked there made me think about how much it would calm my soul to plant some flowers. Living at 8700 feet I respect the mountain area guideline about waiting until after June 15 to plant annuals. Sometimes I ache with waiting. And since I'm going on yet another trip away, I'll have to wait even longer. The selection of plants in the stores might be paltry by the time I return. But here are Jesus' words from the second book, encouraging me. God Calling records the words a woman heard Jesus' saying to her in
her meditation long ago:
Drink in the beauty of air and colour. I am with you. When I wanted to express a beautiful thought, I made a lovely flower. . . .
Absorb beauty. As soon as the beauty of a flower or a tree is impressed upon your soul it leaves an image there which reflects through your actions. . . .
Look for beauty and joy in the world around. Look at a flower until its beauty becomes part of your very soul. It will be given back to the world again by you in the form of a smile or a loving word or a kind thought or a prayer.
Today is the first day of summer. Breathe deeply. Celebrate the lovely things growing. Discover a new attitude.
