T HERE ARE JEWS HERE - REVISITED

" There Are Jews Here" takes you on a journey to places where most never imagined Jews existed: in small towns like Latrobe, Pennsylvania; Dothan, Alabama; Butte, Montana; and, Laredo, Texas. In the wake of the tragedy in Pittsburgh, this story shifts our focus to Jewish persistence, community and continuity, offering stories of strength and resilience. Following the untold stories of the four once-thriving American Jewish communities, the film is both a celebration of tenacity and a warning that the legacies of such communities could be lost forever.

The documentary first released in 2016, will be aired nationally by PBS on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 8 pm.  The film will broadcast as part of the 2018 season of the Emmy-nominated documentary series America ReFramed on the WORLD Channel.

The last portion covers the transfer of the Latrobe Torahs to JCC and shows many of our members in the crowd.

How to watch:
  • Check you local listings for the channel in your area

Special note:  We will be reading this Shabbat from the Latrobe Torah donated by Paula Hait in honor of her husband Howard.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

My mom, Zena Jay, Tzipporah Bat Shlomo Ha-Levi v' Sara, passed early in the morning of 20 Kislev, 5778.   Every 20th of Kislev, on the night before, I will light a Yahrtzeit candle to mark this date. Because she was buried on the 22nd of Kislev, and the ritual mourning period for a parent is a year, this year the Yahrtzeit will be observed on the 22nd. This date corresponds to November 30, 2018 on the secular calendar. Thus, as I am writing this, I am looking at the first Yahrtzeit candle that I will be lighting in mom's memory. Oy.

The year of mourning forces us to mark many firsts. A birthday, an anniversary, Hanukkah, Tu B'Shvat, Purim, Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah. These all becomes firsts "without". We had the unveiling on the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend so, even though this was the first Thanksgiving without mom, she was there.

The internal voice that frequently calls out, "I need to call mom to tell her about this, or that", continues. The desire for one more conversation, for one more pearl of wisdom, for one more: "Love you", is still there.

But, it is not all sadness. There are many, many good memories that bring warmth and even joy. I often recall vacation moments, lifecycle moments, and holiday moments. But, for me, the most special recollections seem to revolve around quiet times alone with my mom; The times we sat and had a cup of coffee and had nice conversations about random topics. The memories become the blessing.

I think one lesson I take from this year of mourning is that, as parents, and grandparents, we need to be cognizant of making these memories. We need to be memory builders. So, continue to spend quality time with your children and grandchildren. Moments will be recalled, and recalled, and recalled. And they are as real as when they first occurred.

Last year, Hanukkah began as we were sitting Shiva. So during Shiva, in the Shiva house, we actually lit Hanukkah candles. It might seem odd, eerie, weird, and counter-intuitive to light a Hanukia in a Shiva house, but it wasn't. It was actually comforting. There was something about those Hanukkah lights that was mesmerizing and calming even as they burned next to the 7-day candle.

So here is lesson two. The memory of my mom, or all of our lost loved ones, are encapsulated in the glow of the candle's flame. Certainly we see them in the Yahrtzeit candle, but they are also in our Shabbat candles and in the candles of our Hanukkah Menorahs.

Like our loved ones, though the candle does not last forever, while it is lit, it brings warmth and, literally makes the world a little brighter. The menorah that each of us will be lighting for 8 days beginning on Sunday evening, contains lights to brighten the world. Those candles may not last forever, but each night they become brighter by one candle. And each night they the world is lit just a bit more intensely.

Finally, here is lesson three. Take note of the Shamash candle this year as you light the other candles with it. The Shamash passes its light to the next candle but its light is not diminished. Indeed, together they flare to make a brighter light. And, when separated, its light continues on its own and in the other candle. Our loved ones are the Shamash.   They pass their light to us and we, in turn, will pass our light on to our children and grandchildren. And we will pass it to others. A continuously shared candle need never go out.

Our tradition tells us that we are to be a light unto the nations. We should start by being a light to those we love.

Accept the light, Be the light, Share the light, and Strengthen the light.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Urim Sameach (Happy Festival of Lights) -

SUFGANIYOT (DONUTS)

Sufganiyot are believed to have first come from Spain, adapted from a similar treat, the sopaipilla. Others say the sopaipilla was borrowed from the Jews.  Either way they are a great treat for Hanukkah.

RECIPE FOR JELLY FILLED DONUTS
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 (1/4-ounce) packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup warm whole milk (105°F to 115°F)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/4 stick), at room temperature
  • 6 cups (1 1/2 quarts) vegetable or canola oil, for frying, plus more for coating the bowl
  • 2/3 cup smooth jam or jelly
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
Special equipment: You will need a  2-inch round cutter. If you don't have one, you can use a drinking glass of the same size.
You will also need a  candy/fat thermometer, as well as a 12- to 18-inch pastry bag fitted with a 1/4-inch round tip to fill the donuts with jam or jelly.
Game plan: When deep-frying, make sure the oil stays at a constant temperature, adjusting your stove's heat as necessary.

  1. Place the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer and whisk to combine. Add the yolks and milk and mix, using the hook attachment, on medium-low speed until a shaggy dough forms, about 1 minute. Add the butter, increase the speed to medium high, and mix until the dough is smooth, shiny, and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  2. Coat a large bowl with oil. Form the dough into a ball, place in the bowl, and turn to coat in the oil. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  3. Lightly flour a baking sheet; set aside. Punch down the dough, transfer to a lightly floured work surface, and roll until about 1/4 inch thick. Using a 2-inch round cutter, stamp out as many dough rounds as possible and place on the prepared baking sheet about 1/2 inch apart. Gather the dough scraps into a ball and roll out again, stamping rounds until you have 30 total on the baking sheet. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Let rise in a warm place until puffy and about 1/2 inch thick, about 30 minutes.
  4. Place the vegetable or canola oil in a Dutch oven or a large, heavy-bottomed pot and set over medium heat until the temperature reaches 350°F on a candy/fat thermometer. Meanwhile, line a second baking sheet with paper towels and place a wire rack over the paper towels; set aside. Place the jam or jelly in a piping bag fitted with a 1/4-inch round tip; set aside.
  5. Using a flat spatula (don't use your hands-this will deflate the donuts), carefully transfer the dough rounds, one at a time, into the oil. You should be able to fit about 6 at a time, leaving at least 1 inch of space in between and keeping the oil temperature at 350°F. Fry until the bottoms are golden brown, about 1 1/2 minutes. Carefully flip with a fork and fry until the second side is golden brown, about 1 1/2 minutes more. (If air bubbles appear in the donuts, pierce with the tip of a paring knife.) Remove with a slotted spoon to the wire rack. Repeat with the remaining dough rounds.
  6. When the donuts are cool enough to handle, use a paring knife to puncture the side of each to form a pocket in the center. Place the tip of the piping bag into the pocket and pipe about 1 teaspoon of jam or jelly inside. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
