Dr. Robishaw's Opioid Use Disorder Study Featured Nationally

Janet Robishaw, Ph.D., professor and chair for the Department of Biomedical Science at the College of Medicine, is receiving national recognition for her groundbreaking opioid use disorder study. This novel research was recently featured on television locally, on CBS-12 (WPEC), and nationally, on ABC-12 (WJRT) in Flint, Michigan, NBC-16 (WNDU) Indianapolis, Indiana, and NBC-5 (KXAS) in Dallas, Texas. In December 2017, Dr. Robishaw and colleagues from Geisinger Health System and the University of Pennsylvania, received a $4 million grant from National Institutes for Health (NIH) for the study. This grant helps Dr. Robishaw and her fellow collaborators determine if there is a particular subset of genes and genetic variants that influence susceptibility to becoming addicted to prescription opioids. 



HCOP Bridge to Medicine Closing Ceremony

FAU's Healthcare Careers Outreach Program (HCOP) held their Bridge to Medicine Closing Ceremony on Saturday, November 17, in the Dawson Theater at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Bridge to Medicine is a new HCOP program focused on holistically improving college and medical school candidacy. High school Juniors and Seniors interested in pursuing health professions from Palm Beach County are eligible to apply. Selected students will receive career exposure within the field of medicine and complete college preparatory workshops covering college essays, interview skills, and research presentation skills. Bridge to Medicine is run by medical students but lectures are often given by medical school faculty and FAU Medicine residents/fellows.  This year's inaugural class was comprised of 44 students from five of the college's affiliated high schools in Palm Beach County. Thank you to all of the student volunteers, including second-year medical students,   Vishnu Muppala, MPH , and  Riyana Lalani , who were co-leaders of the closing ceremony efforts. 


Caridad Health Center Family Festival Health Fair

Medical students and faculty represented the Schmidt College of Medicine at the Caridad Health Center Family Festival Health Fair on Saturday, November 17. Students performed screening tests, which included blood pressure, height and weight, and body mass indexes (BMI) under the supervision of faculty members. The students also completed documentation, provided interpretation services, and educated and counseled patients to ensure that they were efficiently and carefully examined . More than 100 patients were screened and counseled at the Caridad Health Center Family Festival Health Fair.


Cleveland Clinic of Florida's Master Clinicians Awards

On Friday, November 9, the Cleveland Clinic of Florida celebrated their 30th Anniversary and honored their 2018 Master Clinicians. Congratulations to  Raul Rosenthal, M.D. , clinical affiliate professor of Surgery and  Dalia McCoy, M.D. , preceptor, who received this distinguished honor. Recipients exemplify leadership, talent, innovation, commitment, and outstanding outcomes. Recipients are nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of Cleveland Clinic leaders.



Medical Student Highlights

Fourth-year medical student, Ovini Rodrigo, presented her poster entitled: "Another Racial Divide: Greater Disparities in Black: White Infant Mortality from Necrotizing Enterocolitis than Total Deaths" at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition on Friday, November 2, in Orlando.  More than 15,000 pediatric health care professionals attended the conference, sharing their passion for children's health. Ovini presented her poster during the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine session. Ovini's project was supported by  Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., Dr.P.H. , Sir Richard Doll professor and senior academic advisor at the Schmidt College of Medicine and  Sarah Wood, M.D. , senior associate dean for Medical Education and associate professor of Pediatrics. 


 


Three medical students represented the Schmidt College of Medicine at the 6th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound (FUS) in Reston, Virginia this past October.  Fourth-year medical students, Vikash Sinha and  Daniel Kushner, and second-year medical student,  Jude Jarakipresented their research for an audience of 500 that included experts in the technology and clinical applications of FUS. The students  conducted their research under clinical affiliate associate professor,  Suzanne LeBlang, M.D. a neuroradiologist and leader in the field of focused ultrasound. Second year medical student, Elicia Goodale, received a travel award through the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Foundation to attend the CAP Annual Meeting in Chicago from October 20-24. Elicia was supported by clinical affiliate professor, Alvin Ring, M.D."The Medical Student Travel Award sponsored by the CAP Foundation enabled me to participate in an enriching opportunity. CAP 2018 opened my eyes to the possibilities and potential within the field of pathology. It facilitated networking for future opportunities as I progress through my medical training, and I connected with professionals with whom I hope to maintain contact for years to come," Elicia said. 



Fourth-year medical student Rachel Tobillo attended the American Society of Clinical Oncology Palliative Care Conference in San Diego, California. Rachel was selected to present her poster entitled: "Dry eye after whole brain radiation: Analysis from a prospective study."



Resident Highlights 

David Rubay, M.D. and Adam Mann, M.D., Surgery residents at FAU, won this year's David Wulkan Scholarship. This scholarship provides support for educational and living expenses to students and residents from the Schmidt College of Medicine at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital.  Physicians, family, and community members have chosen to provide this scholarship in loving memory of their colleague and friend, David L. Wulkan, M.D. a surgeon at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital.  





AAMC Annual Meeting

Faculty, staff, and students attended the 2018 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Annual Meeting: Learn Serve Lead from November 2-5 in Austin, Texas. The annual meeting is the AAMC's signature learning and networking event. The agenda featured over 130 concurrent sessions, 80 networking opportunities, nine Voices of Medicine and Society speakers, and four plenary sessions.

Third-year medical student, William Gibbs, and second-year medical students Jacob Musinsky, and Jeremy Cohen participated in the Organization for Student Representatives (OSR) poster session. William Gibbs was elected as the Regional Legislative Affairs Delegate to the AAMC, where he will represent southern (south of Maryland, west of New Mexico) medical schools with regards to legal initiatives in medicine. William will also work with the national committee to remain informed of occurrences on Capitol Hill regarding medical education and he will communicate with the AAMC's Office of Governmental Relations. Current goals for the national committee include expanding residencies, transparency in healthcare, and patient advocacy.

Graduate Medical Education Director Receives Training Administrator Certification

Congratulations to Venus Davis-Wallace, director of Graduate Medical Education, who successfully completed certification as a training administrator in Graduate Medical Education. Venus joins more than 1,400 TAGME-certified professionals who exhibit advanced competency and higher commitment to the role of residency and fellowship administrators, coordinators, and managers in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) programs. The certification is valid for five years both initially and subsequent to receiving Maintenance of Certification. This credential identifies achievements and knowledge in the administration of graduate medical education programs and exhibits dedication to professional growth and development.
