ENDOWMENT FUND HELPS REPLENISH TRUSTEE'S RESERVE ACCOUNT
When the Evergreen United Methodist Church established our Endowment Fund back in the late 1990's it was envisioned that a portion of the funds that our congregation donated could be used by the Trustees to make unbudgeted improvements to the building and grounds. Little did the founding members of the Endowment Committee know that nearly a quarter of a century would go by before a serious need would occur. "Flash" forward to this past year, when a lightning bolt hit our church, causing the loss of many of the electrical gizmos that our church relies upon. The Trustees had a reserve savings account set up to handle this kind of emergency, but after all the expenses from the lightning strike and other happenstances were accounted for, the reserve account needed replenishment just in case another really expensive issue happened. This kept the Trustees up at night, pondering questions like:
  • "What if the nearly 50-years old furnace stops working?"
  • "What if the roof blows off?"
The Endowment Fund to the rescue!
With approval from the Church Council, a portion of the earnings of the Endowment Fund were transferred to the Trustees Reserve Account. The principal used to establish the Endowment Fund was not touched. The transfer allowed the Trustees to not only replace the lightning damaged electronics, but also to make some long needed repairs and yet preserve a chunk of money for the next emergency. Items thus completed included: installation of new locks and rekeying the entire building; replacement of the phone system; new finance computer; replacement of the sanctuary projector, screen and laptop; repairs to the organ; replacing office carpet; installing interior window blinds in the office; and many more smaller but much needed improvements. The Trustees thank the Endowment Committee for helping to make all this possible!

Want to learn more about the Endowment Fund and how you can help secure the future of our church? Please contact any member of the Endowment Committee, including ST Womack (Chair); Vickie Borden; Jim Waltz or Penn Gildersleeve. You can also email the office with your inquiry and we will get back to you. Lastly, stay tuned to Happenings in the next several months where we will publish additional information about the Endowment Fund.

UMM BREAKFAST: CROSSROADS PRISON MINISTRY
On Saturday, February 1st @ 8:30am, UMCE's own Ruthanne Huber will be speaking on United Crossroads Prison Ministry's mentorship program. Following is a synopsis of her presentation:

We are not meant to study God's Word alone. That is why Crossroads Prison Ministry's mentorship program connects prisoners with mentors who help them study the bible. The mentors are the heart of the ministry and what makes it different from other correspondence programs. Through the mentorship program, students can take over 100 guided bible study lessons free of charge. The program also pairs prisoners with their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ from churches all over the world. They review their lessons, write to them and encourage them to grow in their faith in an effort to transform their communities in prison and in the outside world upon their release.

UMM invites all church members and friends to come at 8:30 to learn about Crossroads Prison Ministry and Ruthanne's involvement in this extremely important program.

Super Bowl Sunday is almost here! On Sunday, February 2, 2020 the UMCE Youth Group will be selling homemade soup to go - perfect for enjoying during the big game. Please plan to take home quarts or gallons of homemade soup to feast on while you watch some great football. And in doing so, contribute to the UMCE Youth Mission 2020. That's a cause fans of both teams can support! Suggested donation: $5 per quart and $10 per gallon.

YOUTH MISSION FUNDRAISER: UPCYCLED T-SHIRT TOTES
Our reusable, washable t-shirt totes are made from an upcycled t-shirt, donated to Evergreen Mission Upcycling. According to the Huffington Post, "The EPA estimates that the average American throws away about 70 pounds of clothes a year, most of which are destined to rot away in landfills. Why toss a shirt into the trash where it will waste away in a landfill when you could give it new life instead?" T-shirt upcycling gives new life to cotton t-shirts, and saves an incredible amount of energy and resources. The youth of the United Methodist Church of Evergreen are working to make the world a little safer, beautiful, and all around better. But we aren't done yet! All proceeds from the sale of totes goes directly toward our Youth Mission Fund, to help fund our annual mission trip service work. Thank you!

WALK TO EMMAUS

The Walk to Emmaus is a wonderful 72 hour uplifting spiritual renewal program sponsored by "The Upper Room." The Walk is designed to deepen our personal faith relationship with Jesus Christ in a new way as God's grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work. Several members of UMCE and Pastor Deb have been blessed through this experience.

The Emmaus of The Rockies community holds four walks each year, two each for men and women, one in the fall and one in the spring, This spring both the Men's Walk and the Women's Walk will be held at the John Wesley Ranch in Divide, CO. The Men's Walk will be held April 16-19, and the Women's Walk will be held the following weekend, April 23-26. The deadlines for submitting applications are February 14 for men, and February 21 for women.

For further information about the program visit emmausrock.org, or contact either Pastor Deb Olenyik (303) 674-4810, or John Olson (303) 816-7441.

The Colorado Council of Churches invites the community to celebrate the Faithful Thursdays series at the Colorado State Capitol. Held annually, this year's kick-off on January 7 was opened in prayer by United Methodist Bishop Karen Oliveto. Faithful Thursdays will meet every other Thursday during the legislative session starting January 23. They will be held at noon in the Capitol foyer through April 30.

Faithful Thursdays is a diverse coalition of leaders, organizations and community members who are committed to adding a deeper, moral dimension to the public policy-making process in Colorado. Last year, we gathered as people of faith, we're committed forward a unifying narrative that uplifts our common faith call to build human dignity in Colorado. The Kebbitch Itch

There is an old Hasidic tale about a woman whose name was Anna Kebbitch. She was a complainer. One day, Anna Kebbitch work up with an itch on her nose. All day long her nose itched. She went into town to visit the rabbi.

When the rabbi saw Anna, he asked her, "How are you, Anna?" Anna replied, "I have so little money, my clothes are like old rags. My health is so bad, my back feels like the walls of Jericho. I must walk so far to draw water, my feet are like watermelons. My house is so small, I can barely move in it. My children visit me so little that they hardly know me. And now I have this itch on my nose and it plagues me so. Tell me, Rabbi, what does it mean?" The rabbi said, "Anna, your itch is the Kebbitch itch - the 'complainer's itch.'   Its meaning is this: However you consider yourself, so shall you be."

The next morning, Anna woke up and her nose was still itching. She could barely move. Her back had turned to stone like the walls of Jericho. When she looked about her, she noticed that her house had shrunk until her arms stuck out the windows and her legs hung out the front door. She could not move in it. On the end of her legs were two huge watermelons. Her clothes had turned to old rags. When her son and daughter came walking by, Anna called out to them, but they continued walking on, wagging their heads - they didn't know her. And her nose continued to itch.

In despair, Anna remembered the meaning of the Kebbitch Itch: However you consider yourself, so you shall you be. Anna began to think: You know, I do have money enough to live on and more. Henceforth, I will give out of my abundance to those who are not so well off. My health is not so bad. Actually, for someone my age, I feel quite well. I'm glad I have such a nice house to live in. It's not large, but it's comfortable and quite warm. I really don't mind my walk to draw water. I love to smell the flowers along the path. And my children - I'm so proud that they have become independent and are now able to take care of themselves.

Miraculously, while Anna was saying these things, her situation returned to normal - and her outlook on life changed forever. When the rabbis tell Anna's story, they end with this statement: May your noses itch forever.

We may not get the Kebbitch itch, but it's good to be reminded that our outlook affects outcomes.

Blessings,
Pastor Deb
