St. David's October 2018 Evangel
From the Desk of Rev. Sue +

As I write this, I am newly back in my office after a weekend intensive with the College for Congregational Development (CCD). This initiative was launched two years ago in the Diocese of Chicago, and is designed for clergy and layreaders within a congregation. Senior and Junior Wardens Cathy Underwood and Steve Adam are a part of this as well. Together, and with the blessings of the Vestry, we have committed to two years of quarterly intensive training events. As such, we are one of several teams from a range of parishes undergoing this process together. Our work began at 9:30 on Friday morning and concluded that day at 8:00 pm. We reconvened at 8:30 Saturday morning and concluded that day at 2 pm. I think I can speak for both of our wardens when I say that it was a rich experience, densely packed with really useful material, and I think will be profoundly helpful not only to the Vestry but to the parish at large in the months to come.

The trainers in this process include members of the Bishop's Staff as well as clergy persons from the Diocese who not only have undergone this training and put it to use within their congregations in the Diocese of Chicago but have also undergone some specialized facilitation training as well. The ordained colleagues of mine who give their time in this training are, to the person, people whom I deeply respect. They bring not only competence but also a willingness to share stories from their own experiences that help us see how ALL of us are facing comparable challenges and that, through mutual support, all of us can grow stronger and more vital.

The College is committed to the development of congregations of all sizes, locations, and conditions into more faithful, healthy and effective communities of faith. Rather than being the "latest and greatest" program that assumes "one size fits all," this approach assumes that each congregation is best equipped to understand its unique reason for being and the unique challenges each of us faces. The task of the College is to equip us to foster and support a culture of transparency, collaboration, courage, flexibility, and forgiveness within our own ministry setting.

What intrigues me about this approach is its ethos of cooperation, mutual support, and mutual vulnerability. I am encouraged by what I have seen and heard thus far. This feels different, and different in a good way. The weekend was competently and professionally conducted, but there's nothing gimmicky or "pre-packaged" about it. The wardens and I are in a small group with teams from other congregations. We'll be working together in 3 more weekends   -- December, February, and May -- and learning from each other. Year 2 will get underway next September. Speaking for myself, that process has already begun in some very good and positive ways.

Soooo....more information as we have it for you. Part of our assignments over the next two years will be to bring our learning's back to the leaders of St. David's, (which includes, but is not limited to, the Vestry). In the mean time, please keep the 3 of us in your prayers as we not only lean into these training sessions, but as we begin to share what we have learned and bring more of us at St. David's into this exciting, life-giving process.

We are excited to provide two sessions of
Beautiful Me classes to be held on:

Saturday, October 6th.  9:00-11:30 in the undercroft
Tuesday, October 10   9:00 - 11:30 in the undercroft

Beautiful Me is curriculum-based and has three tenets that improve self-esteem: to teach females to understand who they are, to teach females to appreciate their own skills and qualities, and to teach females to understand that there is gratification earned by helping others.  Each female has the power to embrace her talents, aspirations, capabilities, and potential; with guidance, she can use these skills to achieve a better tomorrow for herself and her community.  We invite you to join our Beautiful Me community!

This class is open to all adult females of St. David's .  Please sign up for one of the sessions by calling St. David's office at 847-724-1341or by emailing [email protected] .  Please provide your name and which class you would like to attend.  Coffee and light food will be provided, a $20 donation is suggested.

PET BLESSING

You won't want to miss this fun, inter-generational , interfaith, inter-species  event on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 pm on the St. David's side lawn. This is a way of inviting parishioners, friends, and the neighborhood to celebrate God's care for ALL creation - in honor of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. (The Feast of St. Francis is Oct 4; this annual event is held on the Sunday closest to the feast day. Please help spread the word. A gentle reminder that all critters should be leashed or otherwise contained (for their safety and the safety of others).
Glenbrook CROP Hunger Walk 2018
October 21, 2018

This year's CROP walk registration begins at 12:30 pm at Northfield Community Church, in Northfield, at 400 Wagner Road. Step-off time is 1:00 pm.

About the CROP Hunger Walk and
Church World Service
CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by  Church World Service (CWS) and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger both at home and around the world. CWS is made up of over 37 Christian denominations.

Currently, well over 2,000 communities across the U.S. join in more than 1,300 CROP Hunger Walks each year. More than five million CROP Hunger Walkers have participated in more than 36,000 CROP Hunger Walks in the last two decades alone.

Where do CROP Hunger Walk funds go?
CROP Hunger Walks help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service, especially grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts around the world. In addition, each local CROP Hunger Walk can choose to donate up to 25 percent of the funds it raises to hunger-fighting programs in its own community.
Glenbrook CROP Hunger Walk has risen over $680,000 over the past thirty-two years. Last year (2017), we raised over $30,000.
CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water, as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools, to wells and water systems, to technical training and micro-enterprise loans, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities, their strengths and their needs something CWS has learned through some 70 years of working in partnership around the world.

Why we walk...
  • Feed the hungry. Over 800 million people worldwide do not have enough food to lead a healthy, active life.
  • Save lives. Hunger kills more people in the developing world than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
  • Children. Over 65 million primary school-age children around the developing world attend classes hungry, and one in six - roughly 100 million - are underweight in developing countries.
  • Equality. Women farmers in parts of the world do not have the same access to resources as men. If they did, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.

Annual Average Statistics:
1,300 CROP walks

$1,250,000 raised

114,000 participants

Please contribute to this year's mission if you can, and, if you can, join fellow CROP walkers at Northfield Community Church. One can choose to walk any distance, including 1K, 5K & 10K.

Being able to connect quickly and easily with youth is vital to youth ministry and that means that texting is the most common platform that kids (and increasingly, parents) rely on to communicate. Texting is also inherently private, which requires Youth Ministers like me to take extra care to safeguard the children and youth I'm entrusted with.

In addition to the release form that parents sign each year, giving permission for their children to send and receive texts to me, we have also instituted a new policy. Using Simply Ministry Texting Service from Group, Inc., all texts sent or received by the YFM Director will be archived and cannot be deleted. Every month, the messages will be reviewed by the Rector to ensure that all text messages sent and received are appropriate and adhere to the principles of Keeping God's People Safe. For a copy of the Text Message Policy, contact me at [email protected] .

MONDAY NIGHT PRAYER GROUP

The Monday Night Prayer Group known as Kavanah (Hebrew word meaning "prayer with vigorous intent") has set up Prayer Request Boxes in the Chapel and in the Church Narthex. Parishioners, guests, anyone who happens to be in the building, may write out a prayer request on the provided blue 3 x 5 cards and be assured that the members of Kavanah will include those prayers as part of their Monday evening gathering.

Requests can be broad (e.g., "pray for those suffering from mental illness"; "pray for the people of Palestine and Israel"; "pray for our country and for the mid-term elections" etc.) OR they can be requests for specific individuals and their unique circumstances, if desired. Any names submitted will be passed on to the Office for inclusion in the Sunday Prayers of the People. And of course, the office continues to accept requests for individuals to be included in Sunday prayers via phone calls and emails, as always.

Kavanah meets at 7 pm on Mondays in the Chapel. This small group is open to EVERYONE. If you desire prayers on your own behalf, but may not necessarily wish to join the group, you are welcome to attend as well.

Little Rectory:

On October 21, the vestry will present a resolution to the parish for a vote to approve the sale of the "little rectory," with proceeds directed to capital improvements at St. David's. While this does not mean that a sale would be imminent, approval by the parish, and ultimately by the Diocese, would empower the vestry to proceed with a sale if market conditions are right. Watch your mailboxes for a letter containing info on the voter eligibility, the formal resolution and a ballot.
