Their talk will also focus on the continuing struggles of the Maasai people and their efforts to help them. Dave Loomis and Glenn Stoll will be serving the breakfast.

Evergreen Christian Outreach and Conifer's Mountain Resource Center facilitate the collection of Christmas gifts for children of client families. Collected items are made available for selection by the parent (or parents) to supplement their child's Christmas. Two boxes for depositing donated toys and clothing will be located in the Fellowship Hall.

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS AT UMCE

For over thirty years the United Methodist Church of Evergreen has offered the option of presenting Christmas gifts to friends and relatives in the form of a donation to various non-profit organizations. This most Christian celebration gift is truly a way to recognize family and friends while at the same time benefiting worthwhile causes in honor of the Christmas spirit. Special cards will be available for the recipient of your gift.
An Alternative Christmas order form is being provided as a newsletter and bulletin insert. The completed form can be given to a member of the Missions Committee at the Alternative Christmas table in Fellowship Hall after church Sunday Dec. 2nd or Sunday Dec. 9th. If unable to be in church on those dates, you can still deliver your form to the church office. Checks should be made out to the United Methodist Church of Evergreen with the note "Alternative Christmas" on the memo line.

Almost every nonprofit organization (this includes all churches) has to come up with funds over and above the giving, to continue to serve. And we at UMCE are no different. So what we have is a box for your ideas.
SO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX,
AND PUT THOSE IDEAS INSIDE THE BOX!
As Dave pointed out in church, we all have ideas for fundraising but are hesitant to put those ideas out there for fear that someone will say "Great, when do YOU start"?
So this time we are asking for ideas so that we might be able to put together some plans for all to discuss, choose, decide, organize and go forward. No name on the ideas means you won't be asked to "make it happen". We just want ideas, big, small, fun, individual, group, outlandish-whatever you might have in the back (or front) of your mind.
Example: UMCE used to have the best handmade craft show in the area! This could be done all during the year, and presented for the holiday's next season-but maybe that's not what people like to do now? So give us your idea's (no limit on how many)! Please start NOW and deposit those in the box near the front door at church. There are cards to use in case you get a bright idea and nothing to write it down on!

We will hear from our new District Superinten
dent Paul Kottke, join together in worship and attend to a few matters of official business for each church. It will also be a time of reconnecting with our sister churches. We will meet at UMCE to car pool at 1:30. Hope you can join us.

Finding Hope in the Faces of the Oppressed
A presentation and conversation about injustices faced in the Philippines and at the US southern border through the experience of a Methodist volunteer, Brielle Hohne. Sometimes we view large scale issues through statistics, which distance us from the reality of the situation. The goal of the presentation and conversation is to put faces and real stories to the issues to bring us closer to understanding the people in these situations.
Brielle worked as a UMC volunteer in the Philippines and on the U.S.-Mexico boarder. All are welcome to join us for this special evening. Please let the church office know if you plan to attend so that we can schedule a room that will work.

"Waiting for God" {Excerpted from the writings of Henri Nouwen}
These words by Henri Nouwen are among the Advent devotionals I return to year after year, and I wanted to share with you - Pastor Deb
Waiting is not a very popular attitude. Waiting is not something people think about with great sympathy. In fact, most people consider waiting a waste of time. Perhaps this is because the culture in which we live is basically saying, "Get going! Do something! Show you are able to make a difference! Don't just sit there and wait!" For many people, waiting is an awful desert between where they are and where they want to go. And people do not like such a place. They want to get out of it by doing something.
In our particular historical situation, waiting is even more difficult because we are so fearful. One of the most pervasive emotions in the atmosphere around us is fear. People are afraid - afraid of inner feelings, afraid of other people, and also afraid of the future. Fearful people have a hard time waiting, because when we are afraid we want to get away from where we are. But if we cannot flee, we may fight instead. Many of our destructive acts come from the fear that something harmful will be done to us.
And, if we take a broader perspective - that not only individuals but whole communities and nations might be afraid of being harmed - we can understand how hard it is to wait and how tempting it is to act. Here are the roots of a "first strike" approach to others. People who live in a world of fear are more likely to make aggressive, hostile, destructive responses than people who are not so frightened. The more afraid we are, the harder waiting becomes. That is why waiting is such an unpopular attitude for many people.
It impresses me, therefore, that all the figures who appear on the first pages of Luke's Gospel are waiting. Zechariah and Elizabeth are waiting. Mary is waiting. Simeon and Anna, who were there at the temple when Jesus was brought in, are waiting. The whole opening scene of the good news is filled with waiting people.
And right at the beginning all those people in some way or another hear the words, "Do not be afraid. I have something good to say to you." These words set the tone and the context. Now Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, Simeon and Anna are waiting for something new and good to happen to them.
{I hope you will join us in worship these next six weeks as we journey through Advent and Christmas with these people of faith. First up will be Zechariah. Then will be Mary and Elizabeth. Then will come others who speak anew during this precious and awe inspiring season.}

REMINDERS FOR THE HOLIDAYS AND YEAR END

Amazon Smile is another way to donate to UMCE. Many of us order things from Amazon. The next time you order consider using Amazon Smile. This is how it works: You just log into

www.Amazon.com). Then you will see a screen that will ask what charity you support. You will enter our church name, "United Methodist Church of Evergreen." If you've ordered on Amazon Smile before, your charity name will automatically be registered and you won't get this screen. The church will then receive .5% of your purchase price. This may not seem like much, but it all adds up!
Grocery Card Purchases
Purchase a King Soopers or Safeway reloadable gift card at the church. Use it and keep reloading it to buy your groceries and gasoline at King Soopers or Safeway. Buy the grocery cards for family members, friends, service providers, etc. Encourage them tot he reload the cards and use them to purchase their groceries and gasoline. The church makes 5% on grocery card purchases.
IRA Rollovers
You could give some of your IRA dollars to support God's Kingdom before the end of 2018. A few years ago Congress made permanent the opportunity to make a charitable gift from an IRA to a qualifying non-profit. You can convert your required minimum distribution (RMD) to a charitable distribution by rolling over part of an IRA to UMCE. In doing this you avoid paying any additional tax.
You must be over age 70 ½. These tax-free gifts can be up to $100,000 and satisfy the required minimum distribution (RMD). All you need to do is to contact your IRA custodian and request an amount be transferred to UMCE or to the Mountain Sky United Methodist Foundation for the benefit of UMCE. This would be a great way to save on taxes and complete your pledge, increase your gift or create a new gift, at the same time!
