MHS Parent Newsletter
April 2021
From the Botts Office
There are only 19 days for students until the end of the COVID school year (12 for seniors). While I have never been a countdown kind of educator, these numbers remain significant.  First, we are relatively short on time.  We will continue to challenge and push our students to finish strong, complete work, and learn as much as possible!  Secondly, I can’t think of a time when a summer break has been needed more...both by students and faculty members.  It is my sincerest hope that all Eagles are able to recharge their bodies, refresh their minds, and enjoy the stillness that life can bring.  Although this has been the most challenging year of my professional career (and probably life), I am so proud of our teachers and our students for grinding it out.  Each day, we continue to put our best foot forward!

It was so wonderful to have prom and after prom this year!  I loved seeing our students all jazzed up and enjoying the moment!  I want to thank our prom sponsors, Dana Handy and Shelby Hillman, for working so hard on giving our students a night to remember!  After Prom was also a hit!  Thank you to Jeanne Phillips and all the parents who helped provide our students with a safe environment after their prom.  If Mr. Loving took your photo on the red carpet Saturday at Prom, you can find the pictures at Maizenews.com or on the Play newsmag Facebook page.

This is Teacher Appreciation Week!  Please take a moment to thank our amazing teachers for all their hard work and dedication to our students this school year.  I know that notes of thanks are greatly appreciated!  I hope you are able to thank a teacher this week (May 3-7).

We learned this weekend that we have a state champion!  Congratulations to senior Avery Dover!  Avery earned the title of class 5A State Champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Congratulations to Laney Turner and Isabelle Blasdel on winning championships in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association state competition. Laney took first place in sports photography, and Izzy finished first in caption writing. Mia Hennen was second in caption writing. Olivia Allen, Kayla Nicol and Taylor Roetzer teamed up to finish third in sports hype video. Trey Reisman and Sarah Conner finished third in PSA video. Gavin Metts, Sydney Lampkin and Stahley Sears were fifth in PSA. Dylan Christopher, Luke Fabrizius and Cooper Kelley were fifth in video news. As a team, the Maize journalists finished in fourth place.

We will have a senior parade for the class of 2021 on Thursday, May 21st.  More information will be shared about this soon.  Once the parade is over, seniors will enter MHS for their senior breakfast and then mandatory graduation practice beginning around 9:15 a.m.

Graduation for the class of 2021 is coming up on Sunday, May 23, 2021.  The doors to Wichita State’s Koch Arena will open at 5:30 and our ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.  The entire arena will be open but social distancing and sitting with family units is expected and appreciated.  Masks will be required for our guests.

We will finish our 2020-2021 school year with Eaglepalooza on Thursday, May 27th.  This has become a fun tradition to end our year!  This year, we will celebrate Eaglepalooza from 11:15-2:45.  Students will have shortened classes in the morning.  We are selling Eaglepalooza t-shirts for $10.  We are excited to include our seniors in the celebration this year if they wish to come back.  We recognize that while this day will be fun, it will also be a little chaotic.  It will be difficult to call students out early.  Because of this, we are respectfully asking that students stay at school for the full day.  If there is an emergency and you need your student to leave school early, we will do all we can to help get the message to your student.

At the end of this school year, we will be saying goodbye to several Eagle staff members who are retiring.  Best wishes to:
Mr. Gary Jacobson - science teacher - retiring
Mrs. Geri Hickerson - counselor - retiring

Thank you to all of our students, staff, parents, and community members for making this school year a reality.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but am thrilled that we are at the finish line and provided our students with a great, albeit crazy, school year!

Happy early Mother’s Day to all the Eagle moms out there!!!!

With Eagle Pride,

Dr. Botts
Principal
Important Information
From the Attendance Office
If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advance notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time.

Will you be moving over the summer? If your student will not be attending Maize High School next year, please contact MHS's registrar, Kristi Olinger,  kolinger@usd266.com or 316-350-2121. Thank you!
College and Career Center
We are excited to be able to offer events for students and parents once again. During the past month, we have traveled with students to Kansas State University and Wichita State University as well as hosting a College & Career Fair. It has been rewarding to be able to talk with your students about their post secondary options and show them schools where they can begin to realize their dreams. Below are pictures of our students during our visit to Kansas State University.
It’s never too early or too late for students to begin preparing for their future after high school. Below are just a few ideas for students as they make plans for summer.

  • College Comparison charts are a great way to make sure students choose the college that best fits their needs. Samples are available in the College & Career Center and can be customized to fit specific needs

  • Campus visits allow students to gather information from an admissions representative and receive a guided tour of campus. If a student is interested in a particular major, upon request a visit to a specific department and advisor can be scheduled.

  • Scholarships - it is never too early for students to begin looking for scholarships. Two useful websites are www.scholarships.com and www.fastweb.com Remember, never pay for scholarship searches.

  • Volunteering -- Summer is an opportune time for students to give back to their community and possibly gain insight on a future career. Volunteering can make a difference, as well as, build personal growth and self esteem.

Senior Information

Seniors Last Day (Thursday, May 20th)
All coursework must be completed by 3:00 PM. (Including any remote & online classes)

Senior Parade (Friday, May 21st)
  • Line up begins at the Maize High School east parking lot at 7:15 AM on Friday, May 11th. The parade will start about 7:45 AM.
  • We will not allow any small motorized vehicles in the parade due to safety concerns. Examples of these include:
Go-karts
Four wheelers and three wheelers (including Gators and Rangers)
Motorcycles
Mopeds and motorized scooters
  • No flags or other symbols that are racially divisive will be allowed.
  • Students will parade from the baseball field through the parking lot and around to the front of the building.
  • Parents are welcome to park in the MHS paved east lot and watch from the grassy spaces around that area.

Breakfast for the Class of 2021 (Friday, May 21st)
  • Following the parade, (at approximately 8:00 a.m.) the seniors will be able to enjoy a breakfast in the MHS Commons. Breakfast will include individually wrapped breakfast burritos from Nancy’s Amazing Sandwiches, whole fruit options, and pre-packaged pastries.  Due to the space and cost the breakfast is for the seniors only.
  • Seniors need to RSVP for breakfast through the link emailed to them through their school email address or here.
  • Rules of Maize High School must be followed. Students will not be allowed to have tobacco products or alcoholic beverages. Failure to do so could affect the privilege of participating in the graduation ceremony.

Graduation Practice (Friday, May 21st)
  • Will be held on Friday, May 21st at Maize High School Auditorium immediately following the Senior Breakfast. Practice will last approximately 90 minutes.
  • Graduation practice is mandatory for everyone. If you have an emergency, please notify Betsy Manning (bmanning@usd266.com) or Elizabeth Mans (emans@usd266.com).
  • Seniors should come to the Maize High School auditorium after the senior breakfast and be seated to await instructions.

Graduation (Sunday, May 23rd)
Charles Koch Arena, WSU Campus
  • Students should be at Koch Arena by 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 23rd. Students will meet in the WSU All Purpose Room on the concourse. Students should park in the lot east and northeast of Koch Arena (next to Cessna Stadium); enter the lot off of 21st Street.
  • Families and friends will not be allowed on the arena floor prior to, during, or following the ceremony.
  • The commencement ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 23rd. Koch Arena will open for families and friends at 5:30 p.m. The senior slideshow will be shown on the overhead screens beginning at 5:30 p.m.
  • No shorts, jeans, casual sandals, or tennis shoes will be allowed for the graduation ceremony. Wear a dress or nice slacks, dress shoes and socks. Dress boots are acceptable.  If not dressed appropriately, students will be asked to call a parent for a change of clothing.
  • There is to be nothing written on or attached to the caps or gowns.
  • If your senior forgot to order a gown, Mrs. Megan Bleier, the counseling office secretary, should be contacted immediately. Mrs. Bleier’s direct line is 350-2122.
  • Families paid for the caps and gowns; therefore, they are the student’s to keep.
  • Wear the red and white tassel, not the extra red and black tassels that some may have ordered.
  • Tassels are to be placed on the right side of the cap for the processional. After the diploma is received, the tassel is to be moved to the left. (I have this question asked several times each year – right is right, left is wrong.)
  • Air horns or other distractions are not allowed at the graduation ceremony.
  • A graduation proof and an order form for still photos will be sent to your home after graduation. For reasons of fire safety; family photographers should not block the aisles during the graduation ceremony. Pictures can be taken from your seats or in the concourse area surrounding the arena prior to or following the ceremony.
  • Diplomas will not be in the red diploma cover as graduates cross the stage. Students will receive a packet with the actual diploma and other important documents after they take a picture and exit the stage.
  • All bills must be paid and detentions served before students will receive their diplomas. These should be paid by the seniors’ last day, Thursday, May 20th. If bills are not paid by the 20th, students will not receive a diploma until all obligations are met. For questions about fees, please contact Alysia Buckley, our finance/bookkeeper at 350-2112. Once all fees are paid, students may pick up their diploma from the registrar Kristi Olinger.
  • Senior athletes will not receive their diplomas until their sports uniforms are checked in.

Maize High School is offering an ACT Workshop during the fall semester. The class has two sessions (Monday, September 27th and Tuesday, September 28th). The workshop includes practical and relevant information on how to increase your ACT score. The cost of the workshop is $75. For more information or to register click HERE.

Summer workshops will also be available through KU and K-State.

2021-2022 Schedules
Schedules will be available for students to view beginning in July. Students may schedule an appointment with their counselor to review their requests. After summer begins, we encourage students and parents to email any questions or concerns to their individual counselor. Please note a possible delay in response as the counseling staff will be enjoying a break and recharging over the summer for another fantastic year!

Driver's Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education each term during the school year. The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving. The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be studying the Kansas Driver Handbook (located on the district website or ksrevenue.org) and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the course. More detailed information on Online Driver Education can be found on the district website.

Online Driver Education 2021-2022:   Students & Parents/Guardian must both attend the enrollment night in order to be in Online Dr. Ed. Each term class is limited to 50 students. Enrollment packets may be picked up in the counseling office or downloaded off the district website.
