Welcome to a new semester and a new decade, Wildcats. I hope that you had an opportunity to relax and catch-up over the break. Ok, I know these two things are sometimes mutually exclusive, but the chance to recharge was very welcome.
In the waning weeks of last semester and throughout the break, I’ve run into many of you around town and at various airports. The dynamic regulatory environment that we have been navigating throughout last year has left many of you feeling concerned, and in some cases confused. While federal funding agencies received a nice plus-up of funds, granting agencies are adding additional expectations for reporting and data management, which are adding to everyone’s workload. Our offices have been listening to faculty and staff to help manage these additional policies and regulations – thank you to everyone who has helped with improving our systems.
Nevertheless, the conversations need to continue in order to improve. This semester, I’m launching monthly “brown bag lunch” listening sessions to hear about your concerns, particularly those related to data management, Conflict of Interest reporting, safety and environmental health, and an inclusive research environment for all our scholars. Please stay tuned for details about each brown bag topic. I hope you will bring your lunch, your concerns, and your ideas about how we can improve.

This week: Dr. Bonnie Lynn-Sherow
The history of agriculture can be viewed from many different perspectives – breeding crops with improved quality and yield characteristics, fertilization requirements, and challenges with water and weather patterns. There are historic social and political accounts that have had profound effect on the landscape of the farming communities of today. In this episode, Dr. Bonnie Lynn-Sherow shares a sobering look at some of the challenging events uncovered by her research as she dug into changes that occurred in land ownership and farming practices of white settlers, Native Americans and African Americans on the United States Great Plains.

In an effort to continue building strong partnerships that develop innovative, market-driven online degree programs, K-State Global Campus has improved its distance learning development grant process to add flexibility and simplicity.
Now in its 12th year, the grant-funding program strategically reinvests dollars to promote learning opportunities in consideration of the multifaceted lifelong learner. The program is seeking new proposals for fiscal year 2021.
During the next few weeks, K-State Global Campus staff will meet with deans and department heads to discuss the grant-funding program. Faculty and staff are encouraged to review the details of the program on the

Learn about the impacts that small farming and plant diversification have on disease and insect control as well as water and nutrient use, and how they affect the economy both in Kansas and nationally.
This workshop will provide a venue to interact with local and regional leaders in the field as well as provide an opportunity to identify fields of research at K-State that intersect with this focus. Faculty in all disciplines should consider attending as many areas of study are integrated into this topic.
