Vineyard News
Slowing Down in the Vineyard
by Operations Manager, Joe Salman
Things have definitely slowed in the vineyard, mother nature's colder weather has started coming in, leaves are starting to turn color and drop and we use this time of year to focus and hone our craft for next year. We do a lot of maintenance on equipment and irrigation systems to ensure everything runs at peak efficiency. This icicle that formed on a cold November morning was really neat.
One of the more fun parts of my job is the feedback loop I have with wineries and winemakers. Meaning I get to taste a bunch of wines made by not just Ed and David here at GIV, but also from many other wineries, both big and small, made from grapes I grow. Even though this is very fun and tasty, this is the part that is most important to evaluate on what you did this past year and ensure or improve on for following years. If you have been reading past articles you may know that even decisions that I make one year might affect things and wine quality two and three years down the road. I hope you enjoy that final product as we all strive very hard to make a very memorable wine.

Cellar News
Part One: What Makes Grand Island Wines Unique and Special
One of the aspects that really differentiates Grand Island Vineyards from many other wineries in the region is that all of our wine grapes are 100% estate grown, and all of our wines are fermented and bottled on site in our cellar behind the tasting room. For us, as the winemakers, it gives us an incredible amount of flexibility and control, and allows us to do a variety of things both with the wines, and for our customers, that would otherwise be impossible.
One of the most incredible tasting wines you can try is a freshly fermenting white wine. Unfortunately, if you aren't a winemaker the chance to experience it for yourself is rare. But here at GIV since we're fermenting everything in house we were able to add it to our tasting menu this past harvest so everyone that came in could experience it. If you missed out this year don't worry, they'll be back on the menu again next harvest!
Since all of our wines are aged on site we do barrel tastings as well. In fact, we will be tasting our soon to be bottled Pinot Noir and barrel aged Fiano during our Holiday at the Vineyard event going on December 1st and 2nd. And if you enjoy them you'll have the opportunity to buy futures at a discount there as well. We also currently have our 2018 Chenin Blanc in a tank in our tasting room available for tasting too. And you can currently buy a really nice GIV growler of it to take home!
We also have a really fun Bottle Your Own experience during our Anniversary in May. You get to fill a bottle directly from the barrel, cork it, and even design your own label. Last year was a huge success and we were amazed by how inventive and outright stunning some of the labels were. We can't wait to see what everyone comes up with this year.
There are a lot of great tasting rooms throughout our region, but we're one of the few Estate Wineries, and we really want you to get to experience the difference.

GIV Wine Family
Say Hello to Justin and Kristy van Loben Sels
Justin and Kristy have been around since the day we opened and are very close to all of us at Grand Island Vineyards. Even before this, Justin not only roomed with Operations Manager Joe Salman in college, but even taught him how to farm grapes AND make wine! Now that's really saying something. His love for Lenaya started his love for GIV and they've known Tess for 20 years and was a bartender with Connie at CJ's in Franklin. Some interesting past work was as a goat farmer.
Currently residing in Walnut Grove, they own a trucking company since graduating from Cal Poly in 1999 with a degree in Crop Science and Spanish! Their favorite Grand Island wine is the Cabernet Franc or anything free. Their favorite non-GIV wine is either the Twisted Oak from Calaveras County, or possibly Bartles and James Wine Coolers or Zima!!!
They enjoy our wine anywhere and everywhere, but mostly at the winery using a boda wine bag. This could explain a lot as Justin and Kristy are Quora Slaman's God Parents. They have even informed us that Joe's nickname in college was Sloppy Joe, which was given to him for reasons we dare not print here while at Cal Poly. The pair even enjoy meeting up with Joe and Lenaya once every three months for a rousing game of Rook.

Wine Spotlight
Thinking About Holiday Wines
By Winemaker David Shattuck
As we enter the Holiday season, everyone is looking for good gift ideas and wines to bring for holiday dinners. I am going to feature a couple of our wines this month that work particularly well with holiday fare. We will also talk about a new program at Grand Island that will make an excellent gift for yourself or anyone else on your holiday list.
We are excited to introduce the new growlers available at grand Island. These are insulated 750mL stainless bottles with the Grand Island Vineyards logo. Many of you have had a chance to taste our 2018 Chenin Blanc from the tank in the tasting room. For all of you who loved the wine and wanted to take it home, we are giving you the ability to do just that for the next couple weeks. Please stop by and taste the chenin and think about taking a bottle home before it is released.
On a different note, it is frequently a struggle to pair wine with holiday foods. Here are some of the wines I use for different types of food. As a pre-dinner aperitif that also pairs well with appetizers, cheese plates, or salads, I use the Bridgehead rose. The acidity and minerality pairs well with softer cheeses, pate, cured meat. The fresh fruit flavors also work well with salad, cranberry sauce, and dips.
For the main course, I recommend either Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet Franc depending on what food is being served. Our Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with butter roasted turkey, game hens, or other light and buttery dishes. Additionally, it can stand up to ham or beef if the sauce is not too powerful. The Cabernet Franc is a natural pair for ham, beef rib roasts, lamb, or wild game. It can even pair well with turkey and pork if the seasoning leans more toward robust and herbal.
Finally, for after dinner, I recommend two different wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon can pair well with dark chocolate desserts that are not very sweet or with a dry hard cheese. Our Velluto pairs well with pie, cobbler, and most chocolate dishes.
