FOUNDATION STATEMENT: 6.2 MILLION YOUTHS NOW USING TOBACCO; 84% USING E-CIGS

Data released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that 6.2 million middle and high school students are using tobacco products, and that 5.3 million of them (85 percent) are using e-cigarettes, or "vapes." Following is a statement from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.

DR. KAREN KRIGGER NAMED FOUNDATION ENDOWED CHAIR IN URBAN HEALTH POLICY AT UOFL

Dr. Karen W. Krigger has been named the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky Endowed Chair for Urban Health Policy at the University of Louisville (UofL). She was recommended by Dr. Toni Ganzel, dean of the UofL School of Medicine.

FOUNDATION STATEMENT: NEARLY ONE IN FIVE WOMEN SMOKE DURING PREGNANCY IN KENTUCKY

Nearly one in five women in Kentucky smoked during pregnancy in 2018, according to the 2019 Kentucky KIDS COUNT County Data Book that was released today by Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA). While the statewide rate of smoking during pregnancy in 2018 was 18.7 percent, about the same as 2017, the number of counties with rates exceeding 30 percent rose from 22 to 24; Lee and Owsley Counties continued to have rates higher than 40 percent. In addition, 29 counties lost ground in 2018, compared to 10 in 2017.

The Call for Abstracts is now open for the 2020 Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA) 72nd annual conference, being held April 22-24, 2020 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, KY. KPHA encourages everyone to consider submitting an abstract, as well as letting your colleagues know about this opportunity! Please share with your networks and help them spread the word.

PSAs about E-Cigaretts and Youth
 
DrugFreeLex and the Tobacco Committee recently released three striking public service announcements (PSAs) on JUUL. These face-paced, fact-based PSAs, designed for parents, teachers, administrators and others working with youth, are free for all to use. Each video includes facts about JUUL and other e-cigarettes. These short ads provide insight into the chemicals in JUUL and their harmful effects, the rising popularity of JUUL, why youth may be more susceptible to e-cigarette use and addiction, and why e-cigarettes are especially damaging for teens including negative health costs and long-term adverse health effects.

Grants for the development of integrated healthcare networks that work to address health problems that could not be solved by single entities working alone. Networks will achieve efficiencies; expand access to, coordinate, and improve the quality of essential health care services; and strengthen the rural healthcare system.

Grant amount: $56,604 per eligible county per year 

Applications due: December 6, 2019
