RESOURCES FOR WIND LOADS ON NON-BUILDING STRUCTURES
When ASCE7 is not enough, where do you turn? The code covers most typical building and non-building structures, but practicing engineers know there is always that odd job or new trends that aren't always picked up by the code in a timely manner. Unless you own your own wind tunnel laboratory, it can be difficult to accurately predict wind loads on multiple roof top structures, or tall parapets or solar arrays. But perhaps ASCE7 isn't the only solution for determining wind loads on non-building structures.
In November 2019, Emily Guglielmo, SE, from Martin/Martin presented
Wind Loads on Non-Building Structures for SE University. Emily recognized that there are non-building structures and building components that are not expressly addressed in ASCE7. In those instances, the practicing engineer should seek guidance from other resources, and Emily was able to recommend several guides that may be helpful.
Emily referenced the
SEAOC Technical Report PV2-2017 Wind Design for Solar Arrays. This guide is available for free download for members or for a $20 fee for non-members. The solar industry has moved much faster than structural standards are able to adapt, thus, SEAOC developed additional research-based guidelines, since the initial inclusion of PV2-2012, and issued this report which will be reflected in future editions of ASCE7. Engineers can use this guide to design arrays with tilted panels on low sloped roofs, flush mounted arrays on sloped roofs, and ground mounted solar arrays. However, it does not yet address roof mounted systems with tilted panels that are not low profile or arrays on other roof shapes. Further guidance is included in the
Wind Design Manual developed by SEAOC which includes 7 design examples on solar PV systems. This manual can be purchased through ICC for $95 with ICC and SEAOC members receiving a discount.

WIND LOADS ON SCREEN WALLS AND ROOF TOP EQUIPMENT
 |

 |
Shielding on Rooftop Structures |
How does your office approach the design of roof top screen walls? They are all too common since they do well to hide roof top equipment or offer privacy on residential buildings. However, in the past, they have not been explicitly addressed in the code. Some engineers use the provisions for roof top structures and equipment, others use solid freestanding signs, and some argument could be made for using the parapet provisions.
In the November 2019 SE University session, Emily Guglielmo, SE, from Martin/Martin, presented
Wind Loads on Non-Building Structures. Emily reviewed the ASCE7 wind provisions for non-building structures, but also offered some guidance on non-building structures that are not specifically addressed in ASCE7. She also provided some additional resources available to engineers to help fill in the gaps where the code may be silent on some situations...

SEU SPEAKER INSPIRES ORGANIZATIONS:
BRIDGES TO PROSPERITY AND
SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME FOUNDATION
SE University began the
SEU Speaker Inspires
program in 2015 as a way to "pay it forward," enabling our speakers to designate a charity/organization of their choice for SE University to make a donation to help improve our world. To learn more about the organizations that SE University speakers have chosen, please read our
SEU Speaker Inspires Blog Posts

Emily Guglielmo, SE, Martin/Martin |
In November 2019, SE University welcomed Emily Guglielmo, SE, from Martin/Martin, to present Wind Loads on Non-Building Structures. In 2015, Emily designated Bridges to Prosperity (https://bridgestoprosperity.org/) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donation for the month, and she has chosen to do the same in 2019.
Emily said this about her choice, "Bridges to Prosperity believes that every person has a right to safe access and has engineered innovative, scalable approaches to act on that belief. As an engineer, it's inspiring to see other engineers using their passion for the profession to implement real change in the world."

Anthony Fasano, PE, Engineering Management Institute |
In December 2019, SE University welcomed Anthony Fasano, PE, from Engineering Management Institute, to present
Developing Effective Communication Skills for Structural Engineers. Anthony designated Same Kind of Different as Me Foundation (
https://www.samekindofdifferentasmefoundation.org/) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donation for the month.
Anthony shared, "What stood out to me about this organization is that around this time during the holidays, we should be thankful for the things that we have like our families and the homes we share with them. This organization helps people find homes."
Same Kind of Different as Me Foundations aims to help the homeless through funding immediate needs for homeless shelters and helping those who struggle with homelessness find a shelter.
Thank you, Emily and Anthony, for helping structural engineers with your SE University session, and for your designations of Bridges to Prosperity and Same Kind of Different as Me Foundation as our SEU Speaker Inspires Organizations of the Month!

STATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS
As we begin 2020, we'd like to remind you that upcoming SE University sessions can be used to help you meet your continuing education requirements - start earning hours now to avoid the last minute rush (of course, if you find yourself needing last minute hours, we can help with recorded sessions from our SE University Session Archives). If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you.
States with license renewals for all engineers on April 30th:
Hawaii (No continuing education required) |
New Jersey |
States with license renewals for some engineers by April 30th :
Kansas (April 30th) |
Louisiana (March 31st) |
In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.
For more information about license renewal, please visit our Continuing Education Requirements by State page, where you can click on states in which you are licensed to see the license renewal date, as well as the continuing education requirements for that state. If you would like a complete summary of all 50 states, a PDF file is available for download below the map. This option can also be selected if you are viewing the page from a mobile device.
We hope that you find this information beneficial. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Willard.
