Something for everyone!
Regional Executive Update
By Peter Schneider
SCCA-NNJR has started off the 2021 season with great enthusiasm, our first two Solo events at MetLife both had over 100 car in attendance and we had our third event on April 24th.

The Highland Spring Tour car rally had 136 teams pre-registered for the event, but a raining day resulted in ‘only’ 73 cars attended the event, which is still a great turn out. The rally included a stop at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, where all teams were treated to a free 15 minute tour of the Mine which is the fluorescent mineral capital of the world, and the Museum wants us back next year.

If you follow us on Facebook, you may know that the region is looking to expand our programs we offer to our members by adding RallyCross events to our schedule. One of the major hurdles is acquiring a site to conduct the events. Last year we investigated using a field owned by Island Dragway in Great Meadows, NJ, which is a dozen miles west of Hackettstown on Route 46. But that site did not workout. Earlier this month we met with the South Brunswick Planning Board about a site just off of Route 1. While we are still exploring that opportunity there are several zoning issues which will have to be worked out in addition to getting approval by the site owner. We have the equipment and skills to conduct the event, but we are looking for assistance from our membership to navigate the Zoning process or if you have an open field (between 10 - 19 acres) which we can use for an event your help would be greatly appreciated. Please reach out to Marco Gidej and Bill Petro at RallyCross@scca-nnjr.com.

Looking forward to May, we have several events lined up. On May 7-9 the region is hosting a SCCA National Champ Tour at the Meadowlands, a Time-Speed-Distance RoadRally on May 23rd and over the Memorial Day weekend we are returning to Pocono Raceway for the Joe DeLuca and Linda Gronlund Freedom Majors which includes a Solo event on Saturday and the regions 1st Track Sprint on Sunday and racing all weekend long. Registration for the SCCA National Champ Tour and the Memorial Day weekend Majors event are open on MotorsportReg.
If you have never attended a Road Race at Pocono here is your chance. The region is looking for new volunteers to assist with the standard Race Specialties (Flagging, Pit/Grid, Registration and Equipment/Logistics) assistance is needed for general Race Administration activities like trophy coordination and registration over the three day event. You will be paired with an experienced individual, so no prior knowledge is needed, just the willingness to lend a helping hand. As an extra incentive new individuals that come out on Friday get a free entry to a NNJR 2021 Solo Event, and if you work both Saturday and Sunday you receive an additional free entry, so two free Solo events if you work the entire weekend. Come out to volunteer for the weekend or just a day. Volunteer/Worker registration can be found on MotorsportReg, or you can contact Terry Hanushek and David Hofmann at Race@scca-nnjr.com.

The event is a straight forward Time-Speed-Distance rally that can be driven in 3 hours, including a 20 minute break in Blairstown. You will be scored on how well you can stay 'on-time'. No tricky instructions or dirt roads.

A great introduction to the sport of Car Road Rallying

We will have over 20 timed checkpoints. You just have to follow the route instructions and maintain the average speeds listed in the instructions. The speeds will all be at or below the posted speed limits.

Competitor - Richta GPS Checkpoints App downloaded before Registration; it is a free download and available for both Apple and Android.

The first five "1st Timers" to register for the event will receive a free copy of the "Road Rally Hand Book" included with their entry fee a $24.95 value.

You will be timed as you pass the Checkpoints. We will start off by telling you the location and exact time to pass the 1st set of checkpoints. In the next section we will tell you the exact mileage to the controls, but not the time to arrive, and the 3rd section all checkpoints will be 'hidden' so you can get a real feel of TSDing, by trying to stay 'on time - all the time'.

Each checkpoint will be timed to the 1/10th of a second and there will be a short break between each 'Section'. During the 1st break, event volunteers will be there to address any questions you might have to help you on the rest of the rally.

Starting location: Route 46 Subaru in Hackettstown, NJ.
Registration 10:00AM - First Car Off 11:01AM
