Palm Beach Civic Association Kicks Off 75th Anniversary Season with Reception Hosted by  Royal Poinciana Plaza

The Palm Beach Civic Association launched their 75th anniversary season with a Kick-Off Reception Monday. Over 300 members attended. The event was sponsored and hosted by the Royal Poinciana Plaza.

The Palm Beach Civic Association was founded in 1944 by a handful of civic minded Palm Beach residents who wished to preserve, protect and enhance the quality of life on the island.

The motto in the early days was "Keep Palm Beach, Palm Beach, which is our mission today," Mr. Wright said.

Civic Association & Police Foundation Launch Public Awareness Campaign for Town Employee Compensation

Michael Brown, Civic Association Communications Director --  The Palm Beach Civic Association and Palm Beach Police Foundation have launched a public awareness campaign in town to help residents understand the extent of the turnover problem with police, fire, and general employees.  This ad will be in the Shiny Sheet this Sunday:

'We're Going to Get to the Bottom of This': Palm Beach Officials Meeting with Employees to Stem Exodus
In an effort to find common ground with disgruntled public-safety employees, Palm Beach government officials have been meeting with police officers and firefighters during the last several weeks to hear their concerns. Tensions between the town's public-safety sector and lawmakers have been simmering for years, since a previous version of the council enacted deep pension cuts to firefighters and officers in 2012.

Pension Plan Change Could Save Palm Beach Millions

Palm Beach officials continue to chip away at a huge financial shortfall in the town's long-term obligation to its retirement plan. At a Nov. 13 joint meeting with the Town Council, the Retirement Board of Trustees took action expected to save the town $7 million over 15 years. "I think it's a prudent decision," Town Manager Kirk Blouin said.

Araskog's Early Fund-Raising Dwarfs Silvin in Bid for Council Seat

The March 12 town election is nearly four months away, but Town Councilwoman Julie Araskog is already flexing fund-raising muscle in her race against Rene Silvin. Araskog, a North End resident seeking a second term on the council, has amassed a war chest of $177,685. That includes a $20,000 personal contribution and $80,000 personal loan to her campaign.

Town officials are taking the first steps toward reforming the zoning code. It could take a few years to complete, depending on how officials wade into that thicket and how quickly they are able to advance. Josh Martin, director of the Planning, Zoning and Building Department, told zoning commissioners Tuesday that zoning rules are out of step with the building and lot characteristics that people say they love about historic Palm Beach.

Palm Beach Board Backs Move to Add Stairs to Memorial Fountain

The Addison Mizner-designed Memorial Fountain could be the purest example of the master architect's surviving works, Landmarks Preservation Commission Chairman Ted Cooney said Friday. "Pretty much every Mizner I know of has changed," Cooney told fellow landmarks commissioners. "This remains the only Mizner that is unchanged."

Palm Beach Board Clears Way for Renovation of Historic Hotel

Plans to renovate the historic Bradley Park Hotel cleared the final hurdle last week, earning a thumbs up from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Commissioners praised the plan to polish up and breathe new life into the long-neglected hotel, which was built in 1924.

That's a more active season than normal and defies predictions that called for a less active season. A normal season has 12 named storms, including six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

AT&T Mobility is blaming the loss of a 65-foot-tall cell tower in Riviera Beach for spotty wireless service in the North End, a town official said. The tower was supported by a building demolished in July by the Port of Palm Beach, Steven Stern, manager of the town's underground utilities program, told the Town Council last week.
