Medicaid Staff Meets With MAFP Members
Having trouble getting someone admitted? Navigating the cumbersome requirements of the managed care companies? The Academy can help you with that.

MAFP has begun meeting with the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM) leadership once a quarter to discuss issues family physicians are facing in their practices. This week, we met with newly-appointed DOM Medical Director Carlos Latorre, MD, FAAFP, and DOM Interim Medical Director Jason Dees, MD, to discuss:
  • involvement in the pilot project to improve EPSDT rates in Mississippi's adolescent population
  • different qualifications for hospital admissions
  • issues with payment as a secondary insurance
  • GME funding
If there are specific issues you have with Medicaid, please send us a detailed description and we will work to get answers for you. Please click here to send in your issue.
MAFP Supports Tobacco Tax Increase

A Mississippi coalition announced this week that more than 70 percent of Mississippi voters are in favor of a $1.50 per pack cigarette tax.

Invest in a Healthier Future Mississippi, which represents the interests of 30 cooperating organizations, including MAFP, held a press conference this week to announce the results of a poll conducted by Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies.  MAFP's Jewell Buckley took part in the event at the State Capitol. The group met to discuss the matter and provide information to influential Mississippians, including lawmakers.

Mississippi's cigarette tax is 68 cents per pack, ranking it 40th in the nation, contributing to the state's high adult smoking rate and low life expectancy. The average state cigarette tax is $1.78 per pack. It has been nearly ten years since Mississippi last raised this tax.

MAFP will continue to keep members informed on this issue.

They have specifically asked for input from family physicians. The survey is easy to complete and your input is very helpful. Please take one (1) minute to provide them with the screening tools used consistently in your practice
Tar Wars, Doctor Receive Recognition for Anti-Tobacco Efforts
Dr. Stephens
William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) was recognized in the Hattiesburg American for the role it's playing in helping preteens say no to smoking.

Dr. Melissa Stephens of Hattiesburg, a MAFP Foundation board member, instructs the WCUCOM 'Doctoring Skills" course at the medical school and spearheads the school's Tar Wars program. She arranges for all first-year medical students to visit local classrooms to talk about the dangers of smoking.

WCUCOM's medical students expect to reach 1,500 fourth and fifth graders as part of the school's outreach this year.
