Letter from Director Victoria Allard:

Dear Whelden Memorial Library patrons,

Our aging building has had several serious maintenance issues in the past 12 months, and we are truly struggling to raise money to meet the operating budget this year. Did you know that we only receive approximately 50% of our operating budget from the town and therefore must raise the other 50% throughout the year? Perhaps you may think that we could cut our hours of operation or staff to save money. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. To belong to the CLAMS network of libraries on the Cape, we must stay certified by the state. Among other things, this means we must be open a certain number of hours each week. Having the library belong to CLAMS allows us to offer our patrons access to information across the Cape and throughout Massachusetts. If we lose certification with the state, West Barnstable patrons will no longer be able to borrow books from other libraries or place holds on any item that does not belong to Whelden Memorial Library. In other words, our patrons would be limited to only the materials that are available at our library.

How can you help?

It might cause some confusion, but each year the library sends out two appeal letters asking for donations. The Board of Trustees sends out their appeal in November, and the Friends of Whelden Memorial Library send out theirs in May. Please help us ensure the longevity of our much-loved library by donating to either one of these appeals (or both).

As always, we appreciate the generous support you give us throughout the year. We continue to strive to offer the best services, programs, and materials. We have been working hard to update our collection of materials and have recently been focusing on our large print books and audio books. We hope you have been able to enjoy some of the recent workshops, author talks, social media classes, and children's programs offered at Whelden. Stop by on the 2nd or 4th Wednesday of each month between 2:00-4:00 p.m. for an informal get-together. Come to knit, crochet, sew, or enjoy any other type of needlecraft. Bring a project and work in company in our cozy library.

Penzler Publishers'  American Mystery Classics

Introduced this fall, American Mystery Classics is the first imprint of Penzler Publishers, a new company launched by Otto Penzler. The house is reissuing classic American mystery fiction from the Golden Age of the genre. Each mystery has been selected by expert Penzler (editor, critic, publisher, and bookseller). These are titles by greats including Ellery Queen, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Dorothy B. Hughes (available in fall 2018, along with three others). Many more additions will be available in 2019, such as by Stuart Palmer ( The Puzzle of the Happy Hooligan ), Clayton Rawson ( Death from a Top Hat ), Craig Rice ( Home Sweet Homicide ), Erle Stanley Gardner (a Perry Mason mystery,  The Case of the Careless Kitten ), and more. By 2020, Penzler Publishers hopes to be releasing 24 books annually.
The books have been chosen to be fun for longtime fans of traditional detective fiction but also to readers new to the Golden Age of American mysteries, which ran from the end of World War I through World War II. Each reprint features an introduction by Penzler.
