#1 New Partnership to Provide Housing for Veterans
To help meet the needs of senior veterans in Tucson, the City of Tucson is joining with the National League of Cities, Purple Heart Homes, the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association, The Home Depot, and Bank of America to provide modest home repairs and modifications such as ramp repairs/installation, railings, grab bars, a fresh coat of paint inside or out, or a yard cleaned up to help senior veterans live safely in their home.

#2 Tucson Permitting/Inspection Process Welcome News
The building industry welcomes the continued improvements to the City’s permitting and inspection process. SAHBA has held numerous discussions with City leadership and staff over the course of the year. We appreciate the commitment being shown to ensure that these processes most efficiently meet the needs of the home building community and its customers.

The two new inspection items which have been added to the City of Tucson's permit system are the Residential Intermediate - 01080 & Fire Intermediate - 09010

These items are active and may be used immediately. Some existing permits will be modified to include these items.

The Residential Intermediate will be replacing Framing, Electric Intermediate, Plumbing Intermediate, and Mechanical Intermediate for projects governed by the International Residential Code by combining them into one inspection. All trades must be complete prior to scheduling this inspection. The City will begin attaching this item to residential projects starting January 1, 2019.

The Fire Intermediate will be added to a number of existing activities and will begin being used on some new permit applications immediately. Full scale use of this item should be in effect by January 1, 2019. This item is intended to provide rough-in fire inspections for buildings under construction. By getting the fire department out to the project site prior to the final phase, the intent is to be better positioned to assist with the project to ensure requirements are met prior to applying wall finishes.
#3 Murky Outlook for AZ's Water Future
For months, SAHBA has been actively engaged in working with other Arizona leaders to finalize a plan to protect our state in time of a shortage on the Colorado River. It has been a bumpy road to say the least. Many stakeholders who have high priority water entitlements have been either unwilling to help parties who will see an immediate loss of water or are holding out to see how they might benefit as we get closer to the finish line. This has caused a great deal of uncertainty and mistrust. While there is still hope, it doesn’t look good for two of Arizona’s primary economic engines: agriculture and construction.
