IN THIS ISSUE
The annual Breakfast with St. Nick is this Saturday, December 7, beginning at 9:00 am. You don't want to miss this! Get all the details here.

Rector's Ramblings

It's the most wonderful time of the year, or so says the Christmas song that Andy Williams made popular in the sixties. Generally, I tend to agree, whether it's Advent or not. The "Christmas Spirit" takes hold in these final weeks of the year and that spirit brings a lot of kindness, warmth, and compassion - all of which we need more of. And yet, this is a season that can be very difficult for some. It is precisely because of the joys this season of preparation for Christmas holds that many find themselves experiencing emotions that aren't the most wonderful.

Worship

Advent Worship Schedule
Join us for weekly worship during Advent at Christ Church. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am*, and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica.  Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, takes place during the 9:15 am worship service at Christ Church. On Wednesdays, at 12:00 pm, a Healing service is held at Christ Church and at 6:30 pm, X Church takes place.

(*During Advent, there will be only one 9:15 am service in the church.)
Outdoor Nativity
Make sure to come by and see the nearly life-size Nativity on the lawn at Christ Church during the Advent season. The beautiful figures were donated in loving memory of Bob Johnson.
Advent Choral Evensong - December 17

Please join us at Christ Church on Tuesday, December 17 , at 5:30 pm and experience the meditative music of Advent, during this Choral Evensong, led by the Christ Church Trebles and Cantori. All are welcome!
Poinsettias for Christmas
You may purchase beautiful memorial poinsettias to remember a loved one and decorate our worship spaces for Christmas. The cost is $30 per poinsettia and checks should be made payable to the Christ Church Flower Guild. Please send checks and the names of those you wish to honor to Ethel Horton, at 402 Palm Court St. Simons Island, 31522 by Sunday, December 15.
Decommissioning Ceremony at Dodge Home

The decommissioning ceremony at the Dodge Home, on Sunday, December 1, was a time of reflection and closure, as we said goodbye the physical structure that served as the Dodge Home for many years. The dilapidated building will be razed, but the legacy of the Dodge Home mission will remain with Christ Church and the Saint Simons Island community always. Read more about the Dodge Home here.

Formation

We'll take a brief break on December 29 and January 5, then on January 12, we will begin a study entitled Reckless Love: Jesus' Call to Love Our Neighbor which will take us to February 23, 2020. Then, on March 1, 2020 (the first Sunday in Lent) we'll begin a Lenten Study for the seven weeks of Lent. All are invited to join us. Men's Study Group

The Men's Discussion Group gathers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Youth Room in the Parish House. They have begun a new study of Thomas
Sowell's Discrimination and Disparities, which presents a wide array of empirical evidence to challenge the idea that different economic outcomes can be explained by any one factor, be it discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. If you'd like to join the group , please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Wednesday Advent Study

Fr. Tom and Rabbi Rachael Bregman are leading Wednesday lunch-time sessions in Advent that take a deep dive into the history of the birth of Christ. The study is utilizing Amy-Jill Levine's, Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent and will explore the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus, tracing the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. The group meets on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm through December 18. A simple lunch will be served each week. Books are available through the Christ Church bookstore for $11.50. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]
Thursday Contemplative Group

Beginning tomorrow, December 5, at 11:00 am, Randy Siegel will lead a weekly contemplative group in the Vestry Room of the Christ Church Parish House. Contemplative practices help us know God. Through prayer, worship, scripture, meditation, and silence, we experience God's presence and are healed, renewed and transformed by God's love. The group will meet for five Thursdays from 11:00 am to Noon on December 5, 12, 19 and January 2 and 9. (We will skip the week of Christmas.) Come when you can! For more information, contact Randy Siegel at 828-301-0819.

Making a Charitable Distribution
In this season of giving, and as we wrap up 2019, we've got some information to share about making charitable donations from the required distribution of your IRA, should it apply to you.

Did you know that you can make a donation of all or a portion of the Required Minimum Distribution from your retirement account to Christ Church, and your donation will be tax-exempt? Here's how it works.I f a person is at least age 70½, they must take at least a minimum distribution from their IRA or incur a penalty equal to one-half of the otherwise required minimum distribution amount. They may take more than the minimum at their discretion. These individuals may instruct their IRA account manager to distribute any amount of their choosing to one or more tax-exempt charities such as Christ Church.

When that is done, it is considered to be a tax-exempt contribution. Christ Church would acknowledge to the giver the receipt of that contribution from their IRA. Also, this contribution is tax-exempt even if the individual does not itemize deductions for income tax purposes because the IRA account manager would not identify this to the IRS as reportable income in accordance with the tax code. For more information about Qualified Charitable Distributions, check out the Internal Revenue Service Publication 590-B, "Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs)" or speak with your tax advisor.
Emergency Contact Information Needed
We are in the process of adding emergency contact information for parishioners into the Christ Church Realm database. When you log into your Realm profile, you may enter the information yourself. If you need help with Realm, please contact Glenn at [email protected]. If you prefer not to use computers, call Mother Ashton at the church office, at 912-638-8683, and she will happily take your information and enter it into the database.
Giving Made Easy

You may use the CCF website to make pledges, donations and payments for some activities. Just select "Giving" at the top of the CCF homepage. This brings you to the pay portal. The process is fast and easy and allows you to pay by credit or debit card or by electronic bank transfer. You may change or add new payment methods at any time.
