Welcome to November!
Can you believe we are almost ready to close out 2018? We realize the year is ending as the weather turns colder and the daytime hours shorten. That's why we're grateful for your generosity during Giving Tuesday, the global day of giving. This year, we are asking you to remember the individuals and families in our community who need to stay warm during the cold winter months. With your support, those in our Milwaukee Women's Center's Emergency Shelter and Community Advocates' Autumn West Safe Haven will have a warm bed to sleep in, a safe roof over their heads, and a sense of hope for the future.

Help Our Residents Stay Warm this Winter
|
|
Friends, it’s getting cold outside!
It’s that time of the year again. Time to bundle up when you go out and get cozy when you’re cocooning at home.
Just like you, the residents of the Milwaukee Women’s Center’s Emergency Shelter and Community Advocates’ Autumn West Safe Haven need to stay warm in the cold weather while restarting their lives.
Most of them arrive with little more than the clothes they are wearing. The adults and kids in our Emergency Shelter are fleeing domestic violence or have lost their homes. Our Autumn West residents are living with a mental illness and had been on the streets for more than a year before connecting to our Homeless Outreach specialists.
Once in our care, they receive new bedding, towels, blankets, and personal care items so that they can begin their journey toward independence and happiness with the basic items we all need, especially in winter.

On November 27, Giving Tuesday, please help our residents come in from the cold and stay warm in our care.
Please consider giving the following gifts to support our residents:
- $15 can purchase baby blankets for our littlest survivors
- $30 can provide a domestic abuse survivor emergency transportation to our Milwaukee Women’s Center shelter
- $60 can pay for a set of sheets and a blanket for men and women staying in our shelters

- $75 can cover the cost of a housewarming kit for Autumn West residents who had been living on the streets and are now transitioning to permanent housing
- $85 can cover one night of safety for a domestic violence survivor
- $125 can provide groceries for one week for a family of three. More than 85% of our clients live near or below the Federal Poverty level
- $300 can help to furnish an apartment with pots and pans and kitchen supplies
- $800 can cover a month of rent for a domestic violence survivor who has left her abuser
Our goal this Giving Tuesday is to raise $10,000 to meet the basic needs of our Milwaukee Women’s Center and Homeless Outreach programs this winter. With your help, our residents can be safe and warm and know that somebody out there cares for them. Thank you!

Nevermore Program Featured on TMJ4

The Milwaukee Women’s Center believes in breaking the cycle of violence for good. That's why we offer the
Nevermore Batterer’s Prevention & Intervention Program
for men with a history of intimate partner violence who want to learn new behaviors and repair their relationships. Nevermore is so unique (and effective) that TMJ4 featured it during its Domestic Violence Awareness Month news coverage. As Nevermore’s Program Manager Steve Thomas explained,

Milwaukee Project Homeless Connect
|
|
On October 18,
Milwaukee Project Homeless Connect,
at Marquette University Alumni Union, drew 727 guests needing services related to their lack of permanent housing. This year, free services included dental and vision exams, haircuts, housing assessments and applications, clothing and hygiene items, legal assistance, and employment resources. Community Advocates' Housing Department Manager Shawanna Lindenberg provided information and resources to participants. Project Homeless Connect is sponsored by the
Milwaukee Continuum of Care
, and its volunteers are managed and organized by
United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County
.

Lasting Links at the Milwaukee Women’s Center

On October 28, members of Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ’s 2018 Department of Women passed out unique gifts to the residents of the
Milwaukee Women’s Center
: alarm clocks. Why? The clocks will remind the residents that the Holy Redeemer women love them and are thinking of them. Community Advocates Board President Sheree Dallas Branch led the gift giving. Our residents are grateful for these touching and thoughtful gifts.

Help & Hope for Adults & Families
with Substance Abuse Issues

Did you know the Milwaukee Women’s Center provides no-cost
substance abuse treatment
for adults and families in both English and Spanish?
- Positive Options for Women Entering Recovery (POWER) is a mental health/dual diagnosis program serving women who want to abstain from alcohol and drugs; understand and recover from trauma, domestic violence, and mental health issues; and improve their social and economic well-being.
- The Family Intervention Program’s (FIP) goal is to remove significant barriers preventing Latino and African American individuals and families from seeking traditional counseling services. This intensive, home-based, family-focused case management program provides supportive services to families struggling with the impact of substance addiction and domestic violence.
- Objetivo del programa de intervención familiar es eliminar importantes barreras que impiden latinos y afroamericanos individuos y familias de buscar servicios de asesoría tradicional. Este programa de manejo de caso intensivo, basado en el hogar, enfoque familiar ofrece servicios de apoyo a las familiar que luchan con el impacto de la addicción a la sustancia y la violencia doméstica.

AT&T Pioneers Show Big Support for
The Bottomless Closet
|
|
On November 6, three members of AT&T Pioneers Wisconsin Chapter #4 presented the
Milwaukee Women’s Center’s Bottomless Closet
with a $5,000 gift to support the program’s mission to provide job seekers with work-appropriate clothing and interview prep. AT&T Pioneers Marion Artner, Louise Stahlberg, and Gloria Van Aacken met with Community Advocates CEO Andi Elliott and the Bottomless Closet Manager Jeri Kavanaugh to tour the closet, learn about our work, and present its AT&T Community Engagement Contribution (CARE) award. The group’s Greater Milwaukee Life Member Club has supported the Bottomless Closet since 2013 by gathering and delivering clothes for our clients, and have donated 71 volunteer hours and 589 articles of clothing. We’re grateful for their continued support and look forward to purchasing hard-to-source but much-needed items for our clients, such as steel-toe work boots, underwear, socks, men’s dress shirts, and more.
