What Was Uplift Up To In January?
An important part of our program is to identify the obstacles our Champions face and to offer opportunities to remove or navigate around those obstacles. It’s common for our Champions to struggle with feelings of stress and anxiety due to, among other things, forgoing self care as they are caught up in the day to day challenges of life. It’s important to find ways to create balance which includes learning ways to incorporate self care into our daily routine.
In January, Daniel King presented a second workshop on meditation. Daniel has been teaching meditation in the Elk Grove area for over 30 years. He has studied with many of the masters and offers a vast knowledge of techniques and styles. He introduced our participants to basic breathing exercises used to help center and create a space for peace. He also discussed the different types of meditation and encouraged participants to explore the options to find the type that works best for each individual. For anyone wanting to learn more about mediation, Daniel suggests reading “Full Catastrophe Living” by Jon Kabat-Zinn. We are fortunate to have Daniel share his gifts with us as we journey to a place of balance.
Also in January, Mary Popish stopped by our Community Meeting to help our participants prepare for the upcoming tax season. She worked one on one with many of our Champions to answer questions, educate on tax laws and identify credits that may be available to them. Thanks Mary for helping us navigate through our taxes.
Cash flow management education is a big part of our focus at Uplift. We work with Champions to understand the importance of creating a budget tracking process and more importantly not be intimidated and scared by fully understanding their financial situation. We work towards empowering our Champions to look at their finances in different ways. We encourage new habits and instill the concept that we are in control of our finances, not the other way around. We started this journey in January with our second group of participants. The first step was to share the reasons that make tracking finances a challenge. We then shared the cash flow management systems that each particpant has been using and identify the strengths and weaknesses within each process. In the next several weeks we will focus on creating cash flow management systems individualized for each particpant. Allies and Champions will work together to change habits and works towards becomming in control of their finances.
