Session: Implications of Recent Disruptive Changes in Healthcare: What does the Future Hold?

Recent announcements that bring unexpected vertical integration as well as the new retail giant entrants, such as Amazon and Walmart, into traditional health services, suggest that health care is about to be disrupted. The announced CVS-Aetna merger, Walmart-Humana partnership, Amazon venturing into health care; and a newly created hospital consortium that will be manufacturing generic drugs, are harbingers to the changing healthcare landscape. We are entering a new era considering how little change there has been in how healthcare has traditionally been delivered. What do these innovative partnerships and mergers mean and how will they affect traditional health care stakeholders? This presentation will delve into these topics and other strong influences in health care with a view to understanding the larger forces in motion to truly disrupt health care.

Best practice scenarios and real life examples of department changes will be shared as both hospitals strived to improve efficiency, decrease costs and improve employee engagement. Examples of Key Performance Indicators, benchmarks and accountability structures will be explored, as well as pertinent topics such as the management of observation day patients, behavioral health patients and opportunities to cross train staff across multiple departments. In addition, the link between quality and productivity will be explored based on both hospitals' experiences.
