Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Kaitlin and I am a second year Special Events Management student at George Brown College and work as a Day-Of Coordinator for Best Western C Hotel in Hamilton. Before I entered the event world, I was working within the Child and Youth Care field. I worked for Learning Disabilities Association of Halton, as well as volunteered with Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK) as a Community Outreach Coordinator.
How did you get involved with Smilezone?
To graduate from the Special Events Management program at George Brown College, you need to complete a 4-month internship. When the internship opportunities were posted, I was instantly drawn to Smilezone. I loved everything they stood for and the work they have done, and continue to do, within the community. I applied in the fall, interviewed for the intern position a few weeks after and was later chosen! I started this position at the beginning of January 😊
Can you tell us a little bit about your role with Smilezone?
At Smilezone, I am the Special Events Intern but have been given the opportunity to learn so much more than just special events! From marketing to fundraising to the hockey tournament that is right around the corner, I am involved and able to learn all the aspects of planning and executing a successful event.
What are you hoping to learn/achieve while interning with Smilezone Foundation?
While interning at Smilezone, I hope to learn the process of planning an event from start to finish and all the little things in between. The list is endless when it comes to planning a successful event, especially at the magnitude that the 24-Hour Hockey Tournament has become over the years. There are so many people and projects involved along the way and I can’t wait to see it come to life at the beginning of May!
Is there any advice you would give other students who are looking to intern for the first time?
The advice I would give other students is that interning is such an incredible learning opportunity and you make such amazing relationships along the way. Students will leave their internship with priceless experiences, tools and relationships to excel in their chosen field.
