Ask An Expert: Kailtin Southon

This month we interviewed Kaitin Southon.
Kaitlin joined Smilezone Foundation a few weeks ago as our student intern, and we thought this would be a great opportunity to introduce her! We are so excited to have Kaitlin on-board!
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Kaitlin and I am a second year Special Events Management student at George Brown College and work as a Day-Of Coordinator for Best Western C Hotel in Hamilton. Before I entered the event world, I was working within the Child and Youth Care field. I worked for Learning Disabilities Association of Halton, as well as volunteered with Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK) as a Community Outreach Coordinator.

How did you get involved with Smilezone?
To graduate from the Special Events Management program at George Brown College, you need to complete a 4-month internship. When the internship opportunities were posted, I was instantly drawn to Smilezone. I loved everything they stood for and the work they have done, and continue to do, within the community. I applied in the fall, interviewed for the intern position a few weeks after and was later chosen! I started this position at the beginning of January 😊

Can you tell us a little bit about your role with Smilezone?
At Smilezone, I am the Special Events Intern but have been given the opportunity to learn so much more than just special events! From marketing to fundraising to the hockey tournament that is right around the corner, I am involved and able to learn all the aspects of planning and executing a successful event.

What are you hoping to learn/achieve while interning with Smilezone Foundation?
While interning at Smilezone, I hope to learn the process of planning an event from start to finish and all the little things in between. The list is endless when it comes to planning a successful event, especially at the magnitude that the 24-Hour Hockey Tournament has become over the years. There are so many people and projects involved along the way and I can’t wait to see it come to life at the beginning of May!

Is there any advice you would give other students who are looking to intern for the first time?
The advice I would give other students is that interning is such an incredible learning opportunity and you make such amazing relationships along the way. Students will leave their internship with priceless experiences, tools and relationships to excel in their chosen field.
KITCHENER RANGERS CLARKY'S KIDS PROGRAM HOLIDAY PARTY
On December 17th, Smilezone had the opportunity to run a craft table at the Kitchener Rangers Clarky's Kids holiday party. The Kitchener Rangers have partnered with Smilezone this year to raise money to support our cause!

On December 20 th 2019, the Kitchener Rangers hosted a jersey auction allocating all proceeds to us! In addition to that, every penalty kill Smilezone Foundation earns $10.00 courtesy of Heffner Toyota! So far the penalty kill has earned $1,220.00!!!

Smilezone Transforms
Milton District Hospital

Milton District Hospital

Santa wasn't the only one working hard over the holidays! Over the weekend of December 20th to 22nd the Smilezone operations team transformed 8 spaces into Smilezones at Milton District Hospital.

The Emergency Playroom, 4 Emergency Department Child Observations Rooms, 2 Fracture Clinic Exam Rooms, and the Maternal Newborn Family Lounge were the focus of this Smilezone project.

To make these high-traffic Smilezones comforting, fun and inclusive we added:

  • Sensory wall panels
  • Hospital-grade bean bag chairs
  • Wheelchair accessible iPad stations for use in the observations room and lounge
  • Children's seating
  • Engaging murals
  • Fresh paint
  • SO MUCH MORE

Special thanks to the generous support of the Toronto Rock for making this build possible!
