A Conversation with Bill & Li
Administrator Li Chen and CEO Bill Graves recently chatted about leadership.
Here are excerpts from their discussion.

CEO vs Administrator…

Bill: As CEO, my role is to focus on setting the future direction of the entire organization, while continuing to strengthen care today. Li manages the day to day flow of services and is very talented at running our operations. If one person tries to do both, something will be lost, day to day quality would suffer and the residents would be impacted. The care we provide is so personal, we need someone here watching and leading by example all the time.

Li:  I agree with Bill. We need to have a strong leader working with the Board and setting the direction, and that person is the CEO. I am very good at getting people to work as a team on day to day operations. I keep my feet wet all the time working with staff to achieve our goals. I think Bill and I work well together, because he set the goals and we work together to make everything happen. Also, I speak Chinese, which is a crucial link to our community.

On leadership…

Bill: To me, leadership isn’t about basking in our success when things go right, but rather, ”What do you do when things go wrong?” A strong leader doesn’t assign blame, but instead, identifies the issue and the opportunity that comes with it, then works with the team to create the change needed. The history of this organization with its 21 deficiency-free surveys exemplifies that. Our performance standards are high, and with high goals, not everything will go perfectly all the time.

Li:  A good leader should inspire others so when you are not there, people work harder. They don’t want to let you down. I like to work with people who are smarter than I am and people with unique skills. I want to be that leader who builds a team of people who are driven from within, who have their own goals, and work together professionally.

Bill: Also, not just staff with manager roles are leaders - we have CNAs, housekeepers and other front line staff who are leaders, and drive the quality of care for residents every day.

The conversation will continue in our next issue...
