RED TIDE

Beaches Still Closed - Strong East Wind Increasing Red Tide Risk

Strong 20-25 mph East winds have increased the risk for red tide algae to blow onto our beaches so the Town of Palm Beach is still flying red flags for closing the beaches. Lifeguards are still wearing masks because red tide can cause respiratory problems. The wind is expected to blow at least through Friday.

Red Tide Spreads to Miami-Dade,

St. Lucie Counties, as State Investigates Fish Kill in PBC

Red tide has spread to Miami-Dade and St. Lucie counties. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission also received reports of fish kills in St. Lucie County and reported that low concentrations of the algae that produces red tide were detected there.

Tourism to 'Stand Still'

Officials are expressing cautious optimism that Palm Beach County's first bout with toxic red tide in more than a decade will not have either a deep ecological or economic impact. A prolonged red tide surge since the summer has been devastating to marine wildlife and damaged the summer tourism season along a 130-mile stretch along Florida's Gulf coast.

Most Palm Beach billionaires on new Forbes 400 list have gotten richer

It's been a good year for most of the billionaires in Palm Beach, thanks largely to a go-go - and go again - stock market, according to the latest Forbes 400 list of the nation's richest billionaires. Of 30 billionaires identified by the Palm Beach Daily News as having strong ties to the island, just six saw their estimated net worth drop since the last list was published a year ago.

Final Public Notice

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has received the subgrant application for the Town of Palm Beach engineered beach repair due to damages in Hurricane Irma (DR-4337-FL PW 3370). Pursuant to Executive Order 11988 and 44 CFR Part 9.12, final notice is hereby given of FEMA's intent to provide funding for this project under the Public Assistance (PA) Program.

Tiffany Building on Palm Beach's Worth Ave. Sells for $20M, Deed Shows

One of Worth Avenue's most recognizable buildings - home to Tiffany & Co. - has changed hands for $20 million, according to a deed recorded today. The price paid for 259 Worth Ave. in Palm Beach works out to about $1,221 per square foot. The building was sold by Madden Family Associates Ltd., an entity controlled by a family that has owned the property for decades.

Intracoastal Waterway Near Palm Beach to be Dredged this Winter

The Florida Inland Navigation District plans to dredge the Intracoastal Waterway between the Port of Palm Beach and the Town Marina this winter.

A contractor will dredge a 4.5-mile stretch of the waterway to a depth of 10 to 12 feet below average low tide, said Mark Crosley, executive director of the district, locally based in Jupiter. The channel is 125 feet wide.

Grand Celebration Cancels Some Sailing Dates; Will Assist with Gas Explosions Aftermath in Boston

The Grand Celebration has canceled some sailing dates out of the Port of Palm Beach to assist with the aftermath of several gas explosions in Boston, according to Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. The ship was scheduled to sail October 1 to Massachusetts and provided housing, if needed, for workers restoring service, the cruise line said.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Ambassador Nancy Brinker, a Civic Association Director and the founder of Susan Komen for the Cure, has been on the move helping bring awareness to this cause.

Susan Komen was Amb. Brinker's sister.

A ribbon cutting for the new Fisher Family Science Trail was held this week. There are 15 new exhibits including a Physics Forest, run-through splash pad, human sundial, gem panning station, a dinosaur walk, and much more.

General Electric Should Have Given Flannery 'a Year and a Half at Least'

Former GE Vice Chairman Bob Wright agreed, saying Flannery was just as qualified as Culp or Tom Horton, who was appointed lead director. He said his removal was likely driven by "something we don't know about." "Flannery has never appeared to me to be a guy who people don't like ... it has to be something that we don't know about here, that was in that boardroom that took this action," Wright said.
