Market Updates
--------------
While the weather may be saying summer, the market is delivering spring. That means strawberries, lettuces, broccoli, salad turnips, baby beets, fresh flowers, garden starts, eggs, and so much more. If you're thinking of busting out the grill to really soak up the warm weather make sure to pick up some fresh spring Chinook salmon from Columbia River Fish Co., it's their first market of the year. There are also plenty of cuts and grinds of beef, pork, lamb, bison, chicken, and sausages from a variety of farms and food makers.

The farmers market is a great place to get ready for Mother's Day too, whether you are searching for the perfect gift or delicious ingredients for preparing a special meal. Herr's Family Farm stall will be bursting with bouquets, and if you don't see the right one just ask them to make up a custom one. Mark from Old House Dahlias will be with us too, and what's better than the gift that keeps on giving bloom after bloom. Dancing Light Ranch will have lavender bouquets and gift boxes, so fragrant it's like bring the farm right home.

We welcome our newest farm to market for the season week. Come say hello to Pablo Munoz Farms in the back row. Growing mixed fruits and vegetables near Salem since 1988, they are excited to finally join our market community. Also back for the season, you'll find Ken & June's Hazelnuts in their usual location at the east end of the Grocery Outlet parking lot.

Also joining us at market this week are More Bees, NOBULL Specialty Foods, Rise Up Remedies, Westward Whiskey, and Wet Wizard Sauce Co.

We look forward to seeing you at the market!

tokens
During the farmers market on Saturday June 1st, we will be holding our 2nd annual silent auction to raise money for our SNAP Match program!

SNAP Match offers low-income shoppers a match for shopping at the market, meaning SNAP/EBT card users can receive up to an additional $10 every week to be used at the market. These matching funds help make farm direct, fresh, healthy foods affordable to all, while supporting small farmers here in Oregon.

You can RSVP to our Facebook event to get updates, and mark your calendars for this FUN-draising event!

If you would like to donate an item to the auction, please contact event chair Jemae McCanna at jemaemccanna@gmail.com
InFARMation next Tuesday, May 14: Farming in the Age of Climate Change
---------------------
Join Friends of Family Farmers next Tuesday, May 14 in Portland for a special InFARMation (and Beer!) on ‘Farming in the Age of Climate Change.’ The event will feature a panel of farmers (including Anne Berblinger of Gales Meadow Farm) who are navigating a changing climate by undertaking practices like dry-farming, cover cropping, rotational grazing and more.

This is a free event and will take place from 6-9 pm on Tuesday, May 14 at the Lagunitas Community Room.

Panelists for the evening are:

Anne Berblinger, Gales Meadow Farm: Anne uses farming practices that build the soil while also providing habitat for wildlife, native plants, insects, birds, and microbes. To increase her resiliency, she’s also began experimenting with dry farming techniques.

Zach Menchini, Campfire Farms: The Menchinis focus on pasture management, high-quality forage, and soil health to produce great pork and better the environment. What role can pasture-based agriculture play in addressing climate change?

Susan Richman, Belle Mare Farm: Belle Mare Farm grows heritage bread and cereal grains, cover crops, pasture and vegetables on fields from 3-12 acres…with horses! Susan manages diverse crop and livestock rotation, and optimizes the use of humans and animals as a source of power. She uses traditional methods supported by science, essentially planting to feed the soil.

Megan Kemple, Oregon Climate and Agricultural Network: Farmers are on the frontline of dealing with the effects of climate change, while also best positioned to be part of the solution. Megan will talk about House Bill 2020, aka the Clean Energy Jobs bill, and how the newly created Climate Investment Fund could support small and mid-sized farms by incentivizing practices that sequester carbon in soils and encourage resiliency.

Seascape Strawberries
Happy Harvest Farm
Seascapes are the quiet hero of Northwest strawberry varieties; always the first to arrive at market in the spring, and continuing to produce all summer long and even into the fall! Happy Harvest will have Seascapes this Saturday, sold by the pint, half-flat and flat. Get to market early to make sure and find some, as they will probably sell out.

Black from Tula Tomato Starts
Sprig & Sprout
Sprig & Sprout produces an incredible variety of vegetable and herb starts from their 160-square-foot greenhouse just blocks from the farmers market! One favorite is the "Black from Tula" tomato, which is a Russian heirloom variety, a rich and flavorful slicer with a characteristic black ring around the seeds.

Potato Donut
Fleur de Lis Bakery
Golden brown, covered with cinnamon and sugar and hand delivered at 8 am, these tasty treats don't last long in the market. With more of a cake like texture and less sugar than a typical donut, the potato donuts definitely stand out.
