~ Holiday Decorating at Beacon! ~

Holiday Decorating
Saturday December 1, 2018 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

It's that time of year, to brighten up our Beacon spaces for the Holidays!
Join with Rev. Kevin and let's add some sparkle to Beacon for the Holidays, stop by Saturday morning 10:00 am to 12:00 pm to help set up the Holiday tree in the lobby, add some decorations to the Kitchen windows, the Purple room windows.

Remember: This year our Holiday Service December 24th - Christmas Eve will be a two-service evening here at Beacon, not at Coconino Center for the Arts. So we will want to have some festive décor to welcome all for our Holiday services later in the month.

In Community,
Rev. Kevin Lawson
~ Committee on Shared Ministry: Listening Circles ~

people_social_icons.jpg
The Committee on Shared Ministry (COSM) is responsible for assessing the overall health and well-being of Beacon and for developing new initiatives to support our congregants, leaders, and minister.

We want to hear what's on your mind so we invite you to attend a "Listening Circle" on Sunday, December 2, at 11:30, following the worship service.  We will form one or two small, moderated groups where you may share your thoughts, aspirations, and concerns about any aspect of congregational life at Beacon. Unlike the last set of listening circles which focused on our building project, these circles offer an open forum for you to comment on any aspect of church life, our governance, Sunday Services, Religious Exploration program, minister, future plans, or any other aspect of your experiences at Beacon. Following the Sunday service, meet us in the sanctuary. The circle will run from 11:30 to 1:00. We will provide snacks.

Your comments will remain confidential. We will listen for common themes, ideas, and suggestions, and we will summarize them later in this newsletter. We may also report relevant, repeated themes and concerns at Beacon's congregational meeting in June 2019 and in our annual report to the Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC) of the UUA on Rev. Lawson's ministry at Beacon.

We also offer a second listening circle on Monday evening, December 3 starting at 5:30 in the sanctuary at Beacon. If you have questions or need childcare, please contact one of the members of COSM: Nancy Paxton ( [email protected]), Mark James ( [email protected]), Maryann van Drielen ( [email protected]), or Christina Boyd ( [email protected]).

~ REI Project Update ~

construction_hard_hat.jpg
P rior to Thanksgiving, we met with the architect and went over the draft construction drawings. The drawings will soon be completed, and submitted to the city for approval. We will also be getting a final quote from the contractor for the rest of the project, to resume in the spring. The exception is the hole in the ground where the cottage used to be, which we hope to have filled in soon!

Special Performance:
Border Voices / Voces Fronterizas
December 4 and 5, 7:30 pm
Theatrikos Theater,  11 W Cherry Avenue

Many of us at Beacon, especially given Beacon's public stance in support of families of undocumented immigrants, have followed the work of Dr. Robert Neustadt, NAU Director of Latin American Studies, Professor of Spanish and faculty sponsor of No More Deaths. Known for his unflagging activism in support of immigrants (in addition to his music), he has written a play which will be presented Tuesday, December 4 and Wednesday, December 5 in the Theatrikos Theater. You can purchase tickets here or at the theater office. Bob suggests getting tickets ($10) in advance. We have recently received his invitation, which you can read here.

Warning: This play has language and content that is not suitable for children. The play also contains simulated gunshots.

The next SJA meeting will be Sunday, December 16, following the service (about 11:15). Beacon members, friends and visitors are welcome!

~ Santa's Elf Gift Donations ~

bright_wrapped_presents.jpg
Beacon's own house elf, Nash Al-Ghanim, is collecting gently used gifts for underprivileged children to give to their parents this holiday season. If you would like to donate, bring one or more lightly used, affordable items (usually less than $5) to the service on Sunday, December 2, place in the bin in the kitchen, for Nash to collect for this project with the help of the Flagstaff elf team!
~ Community Action Committee ~

Sun Sounds of Flagstaff is a not-for-profit organization that provides audio access information to people who cannot read print because of a disability. By making creative use of technology and talent, Sun Sounds ensures that every person with a disability has the opportunity to access the current and local information necessary for a self-directed, productive life. Volunteers read aloud from over 200 current local and national newspapers, even grocery ads. This helps establish that the inability to read print will no longer be a disabling condition.  The Flagstaff affiliate has about 400 listeners.

Congregational members can nominate an organization to be a community partner by picking up a form from the CAC folder at the bottom of the stairs or contact a member of the committee and provide supporting documentation for your nomination. Members of CAC are Joanne Parkes, Sue Strobel, Susan Patrick, Steven Patrick, and Lynda L. Dorweiler.

Find out more details about what is happening  on Sundays in December in the Religious Exploration blog.

As part of an assignment for my PhD studies, I am looking at needs of modern families related to spiritual development.  I am interested in what parents need to feel supported in the task of educating their children in faith development.  I would really appreciate your feedback.  I have developed a  short 4 question form that is easily completed in a couple minutes right here on line. I used the Appreciate Inquiry model.  I hope you will take a couple minutes and fill it out. Your participation will help me with my studies as well as help me plan and bring more of what resonates with you and your family to the RE program at Beacon. Thank you so much!

Coming up:
  • December 2First Sunday Fun Day Trip to Starlite Lanes! Find all details here.
  • December 9, Free Childcare for the afternoon, 1:30-5:30, at Beacon! More details in my blog!
  • December 23, Pageant in a paper bag during service. We need you... to come to church on that day.  No rehearsal necessary!
  • December 24, Remember... Two Services, 4 pm and 6 pm, on Christmas Eve at Beacon this year!

As recorded November 25, 2018

Jan & Jack shared joy that they had a wonderful time with a large family in Santa Fe.

Nancy P. shared joy for Dick's 87th birthday!

Terry W. shared the news item of rival school bands; when one had a bus crash, the other played their rival's fight song at the game. A model for all.
