Fall Technical Assistance & Training Conference is Oct. 14-16
Join us this fall, October 14-16 as we re-imagine the role of magnets in the new normal at the Fall Technical Assistance & Training Conference. From school closures to distance-learning with a flip of a switch, districts and schools were challenged getting to the end of the school year. As we forge ahead into the new school year, we know two things: there will be variations of blended learning to incorporate, and it is even more important not to lose sight of these areas that remain so valuable to magnets:

Opening Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Sadie Mitchell
Dr. Sadie Mitchell has devoted her career to the education of children for the past 40 years. She graduated from Henderson State University where she was most recently named Alumni of the Year. Dr. Mitchell received her Master’s in Educational Leadership from University of Central Arkansas and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and a Specialist Degree in Special Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she was also named Alumni of the Year. Thursday Keynote Speaker:
Alex Kajitani
Alex Kajitani is the 2009 California Teacher of the Year, and a Top-4 Finalist for National Teacher of the Year. He is the co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Teachers, and his first book, Owning It was named “Recommended Reading” by the U.S. Department of Education. Alex is also on a mission to get every kid in America to learn their times tables, and to make this happen, he created the popular online program www.MultiplicationNation.com.

2021 Magnet Student Poster Contest Now Open
To celebrate National Magnet Schools Month in February, Magnet Schools of America is sponsoring the 2021 Magnet Student Poster Contest. We encourage all districts to involve their magnet students in this exciting and educational project. MSA is looking forward to receiving many innovative, student-created posters. See the application packet.

As part of the celebration, Magnet Schools of America is sponsoring its 15th Annual National Magnet Schools Poster Contest, and invites entries from elementary, middle and high magnet schools. Plan to enter this exciting and fun student-based project. Districts or schools entering the poster contest must be paid members of MSA for 2020-2021 by November 2, 2020.  Submit your entry now.
Congratulations to Newly Certified Schools
Congratulations to five new nationally certified schools and six new certified demonstration schools, which brings the total number of national certified schools across the country to 167. As leading examples of magnet school excellence, these schools provide outstanding learning opportunities for their students, and join a growing cohort of recognized magnet programs across the country.

Magnet Schools of America’s National Institute for Magnet School Leadership (NIMSL) developed the certification program in 2016 as a roadmap for magnet schools to reach their fullest potential. Schools are assessed on the Magnet School Standards of Excellence and the five pillars of magnet schools. Certification applicants submit detailed examples of their work to promote diversity, remove barriers to student success and implement an innovative curriculum, as well as encourage parent and community partnerships in their schools. Becoming a certified magnet school is an extensive, rigorous process that helps schools strengthen their top qualities and gain national recognition for their success.

Local Teen Designs New Fungicide to Protect Crops
Over five intense weeks this summer, Jason Park of Baton
Rouge, a student at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, used wet lab techniques
and modeling software to study an enzyme from a fungal pathogen, and to
design a small molecule inhibitor to protect crops from that fungus. Read full story.
